I sympathize with them because I've seen this so many times in real life. Hailey claimed to be seeking employment and appeared genuinely upset when Ashley wasn't promoted and wouldn't be able to hire her at the restaurant. She tried selling perfume and even sold their iPad before finally resorting to prostitution. I love how you defined Bobby as the audience due to none of us knowing Hailey's life story. But there are those of us in the audience who not only relate but truly understand the struggle to survive. There are so many people with similar stories of ending up in situations like this. Any one is them could be Hailey's.
Thanks for the comment. That's why I ask should the audience (including me) sympathise with Hailey and Moonee because the answer will definitely vary depending on people's experiences.
why was she not able to work in normal places? because of her character. She was explosive, she was impulsive, and had basically burned every single bridge because of her character. Did she have a mental illness? I don't know. But she was not safe for her daughter, and that she lost her because of her own actions.
Do you know what it takes to have a job? Usually experience, a diploma, or a certificate. Halley most likely has none of those things. Hence why she was hoping her friend could get her a job. The fact you don’t even know that basic thing ,but you are trying to judge this woman for the choices she had to make, is crazy
This movie is more about the failure of society. How the society have failed to provide protection, education, employment, shelter to a young single mother, who despite all the efforts to protect her daughter, fails her eventually, inevitably. It's a mockery on class difference too. People calling her a bad mother wouldn't come to the conclusion if she was living in an apartment doing a corporate job, then it would be a single mother choosing a "liberal approach to parenting" they won't find having other men over for hookups as bad motherhood, cus then it would be her Liberty as a woman. It's our bigotry. Secondly, I think there was a direct connection between upbringing and the permanent affect of childhood throughout the life of an individual. Moonie represents possible childhood of her mother, and Halley represents the possible adulthood of moonie.
Although Mooney is disrespectful at times, she has no good model for how to act appropriately! So I sympathize with her. For Halley, I sympathize with her situation and know she loves her daughter, but I don’t respect the choices she makes! I’ve known so many ppl like Halley and it’s hard to sympathize when they have a self sabotaging mindset in life
I think we should sympathize with them as much as possible, but we should not exempt them from criticism simply because they are poor and have hard lives. I think we can get into this mindset and treat the poor as inherently morally inferior creatures who cannot be held to the same standard as upstanding members of the community. This is wrong and dehumanizing. We should offer help and sympathy, but we should also approach the subject by giving the poor dignity by treating them as capable moral actors.
The questions you asked yourself are a testament to Sean Baker's film. He doesn't do the Hollywood thing and tell you what to think. He just shows you something and leaves the rest to you. I wish UK realism still trusted its audience that way.
I both sympathize AND judge. Because I do feel for them and can understand why they do what they do. But still, their actions aren’t right and ultimately led to Moonee getting taken away so at some point I have to say that it isnt okay and I have to judge them. But I can still understand and feel bad.
I just saw this movie this week and it has really stuck with me. I was an often unsupervised impoverished child and I dont remember thinking of it in that way. I do however remember my friends moms never liking me much and several times I was asked to go away and not come back. That always made me so sad. I was moonee in a way. I want to share this movie with my friends now but I'm unsure if it would be too raw.
I sympathize. Single motherhood trying to survive in any environment the best they can is always incredibly difficult to “judge” on. I can’t. I can’t judge it. Because I don’t know their circumstances. She can’t afford child care and can’t afford a majority of basic necessities, so Halley trying her best to survive with the little options she has is heroic to me. Even when she had to make tough decisions, she tried her best to earn her money the “right” way. And even during struggle, she still managed to give Moon the best she could offer. Even down to protecting her childhood. Not to mention she practices very patient parental care. Is it borderline questionable? Maybe, in the environment I’m in. But maybe not so in the environment they survive in. She remains calm with Moon and even tries to be the care giver that most probably wished they could have if you separate the “job” she had to do. Idk. It’s hard to be a mother. Especially a young single mother. I think most people would say they’ve seen worse. But that’s the tragic beauty isn’t it? Moms like Halley are quick to be discriminated against and talked horribly to for trying to survive on their own. She sacrifices everything for her daughter and never resents her daughter for it. Or even makes her daughter aware of the struggle. She protects her daughter even when she’s close to losing it all. Who am I to judge that just because she doesn’t meet storybook moms?
Excellent video. I personally sympathize with both of them, because I understand its the environment they're in and that's always hard to get away from. If you don't have additional support then you will have a harder time breaking away from it. But I still condemn them, because their actions are not okay and affect others.
I watched this with my 11 year old son and we were both shocked how these kids got away with all these terrible actions. I felt bad how they did not have any moral and ethical upbringing. The rude and disrespectful speech to adults, the burning of the building, etc. the movie didn't show any correction in the wrong doings except in the beginning when the kids cleaned up the spit on the car. I was just flabbergasted that Ashley didn't report Haylie for assault and battery. Ashley has the right to end her friendship with Haylie. I presumed her son told the truth in what happened. I would not want my kid to continue hanging out with kids like Monie. Unless they are trying to help each other become better people there's no need to continue that friendship. Even if these people struggle as single parents with low income, there still need to be respect, a good conscience, consequences in bad behavior , etc. I felt that all the actors were really good in their roles.
I sympathize with all the main characters. Hayley seems to be a product of her environment. I'm sure in her eyes she believes she is a good mother and probably compares herself to her own mother or mother figure who did not love her, play with her or provide for her. So she feels confident Moonee is well taken care of. Hayley, though, seems impulsive, immature and is a very bad influence on her daughter and even her daughter's friends! BUT, Hayley is just a kid herself and from what I could see Hayley and Moonee are each other's only family they have. Both mother and daughter seem to really love and adore each other. My happy ending is that Hayley accepts DCS's help and her supervised visits with Moonee eventually turn into her gaining back full custody after she successfully completed parenting classes, obtained a respectable job, and a legal place of residence complete with 2 bedrooms. I'll add in that Hayley starts going to community college, too, as she wants to become a social worker and help young mother's like she was. Oh, and Bobby is part of their magical family and one day walks Hayley down the isle when she gets married. Oh, as for Ashley, I hope she turns into a better friend to whomever is her friend. I know out of Hayley and Ashley that Ashley was the better parent. Ashley had a steady and respectable job. I don't think she paid Hayley cash for watching Scooty while she worked but gave her food and helped her out every now and then with rent. Ashley, though, needs to grow up too and instead of just ghosting people like a narcissistic person does, she needs to end a relationship with maturity and respect. After all Scooty watched how his mother cruelly told a 6 y.o. Moonee, who was probably hungry, that she will not be giving her or her mom anymore food! As a parent I never denied a child food or took my anger for another adult out on their kid. I get they are one step away from living on the streets and their main priority is their child and themselves but parenting a child never ends as they watch and see everything. So Ashley is an average mother and the cold, demeaning way she treated a struggling Hayley and Moonee got herself beatup and her son watched how the whole thing went down! In Hayley's defense, Ashley was very aggressive, cruel, condescending and mean-spirited to Hayley who had no idea why Ashley turned on her. I'm sure she thought it was because of her turning tricks. Ashley, IMO, should not have threatened to kill Hayley and called her derogatory names. Hayley, as impulsive and immature as she is, was a ticking time bomb once Ashley started mocking her and yelling at her. Poor Scooty, that has to be traumatizing watching your mom bully your bff's mom, and then watch as your mom gets her butt kicked. Then he was privy watching how his mom got even with Hayley. Which, seeing how cold Ashley was toward Moonee, her main concern was probably to hurt Hayley, not help Moonee. I do have sympathy for Ashley though as she is also a product of her environment. I think her care takers taught her if she looks down on people, then she is a better person then them. Hayley sold her body to provide for Moonee, she didn't do it for drugs. This movie has a lot to do with survival. The lady who Hayley gave her weed too was more of a friend to Hayley than Ashley was. My ending for Ashley is that the lady with the weed, or really someone, teaches Ashley how to be humble to those less fortunate. Sorry so long! Edit: explained 2nd to last sentence better & changed are to "to."
Thanks for your comment! to get a perspective from a parent is really interesting because you have that experience raising a child. So thanks again for your comment.
Ashley broke contact with Halley because the children burned down a building and Halley doesn’t discipline her in any way. If someone was supposed to be watching my kid and they started a fire, that’d be the end of that relationship. You gotta protect your own kid first. Also, rude words don’t justify violence.
@ksenia5199 I'm like not 100% on Ashley side. It was messed up what happened but she must of knee Hailey wasn't watching these kids cause she let scooty and moonee walk all the way to Ashley's job with no supervision to pick up their lunch. Like Ashley not that great of a mom either. Like she and Hailey are more similar than audiences realize.
Dude. She was upset because she held her part of the bargain and Hailey did not. Hailey was supposed to be supervising her son. Instead, the kid was burning down a house. Actions that could have ended his life or his freedom. Do you understand how serious that is? Hailey knew that those kids were constantly getting into trouble and instead of changing her behavior and providing supervision she ignored everyone's advice. On the other hand, Ashley held her part of the deal and gave them food and help with the rent. I would be extremely upset too. Too add "injury to insult" Hailey goes to Ashley not to apologize, not to ask what's wrong, but to ask for money and when confronted about the prostitution, which Ashley did have a right to do as Hailey was taking care of her child, she decides it's a good idea to beat her up. I'm sorry but you have it backwards my dear.
