  • Last December, we visited Geoffrey Kamworor back in Kenya. The 5-time World Champion has faced a long road to recovery after an accident in June.
    However, patience, positivity and support have ensured he is back for a memorable 2021 season!

    It’s never fun being injured but if ever there was a year to sit out, 2020 was it. It’s nice that he got to take a break and spend quality time with his family. I’m sure he will recover his fitness quickly and have lots of success in the years to come.

    I have really enjoyed watching Geoffrey's great races in recent years: the world cross country championships (twice a winner, and a bronze medal in 2019), and the world half-marathon championships (twice a winner), plus the great New York City marathon victory a couple years back. Godspeed. At his best, he is the best.

    Having an injury like that and not running does something to the way you think. When you get back you feel so grateful, and that can aid in running faster.

    Coming back from a tibia stress fracture myself, it's oddly reassuring that world-class elites go through the exactly the same process: 2 months of no weight bearing exercises, followed by walking and intermittent jogging. Saw the video of Kamworor at Kenya's Olympic trials, he looks good.

    This leads to the question, what if Kenyan athletes embraced professional cycling?

    • @drym3943
      @drym3943 3 роки тому +6

      They don't have the right genetics. They have extremely short calves and shirt muscle overall. That's why they are good at running. You need little muscles and a lot of tendons. Tendons don't use energy and return it well. But for a cyclist it is the opposite. You need short tendons because they are useless when they is not hard shock.

    • @matttherunner1396
      @matttherunner1396 3 роки тому +6

      @@drym3943 Well, is it about genetics at all? Isn't it the fact that african runners just train very hard from a relatively young age (like they run 3 times a day and stuff) + lead a simple life (which makes them recover very quickly from the hard sessions)? Here in Europe athletes have this approach that there's no point running too much, as it makes you more likely to get injured, while the Kenyans and the Ethiopians are much more willing to take that risk and push themselves more than Europeans or Americans would. Kind of like African's approach is 'all or nothing', whereas other athletes have like a more 'reasonable' approach.

    • @drym3943
      @drym3943 3 роки тому +1

      @@matttherunner1396 your right. But training is nothing without genetics. It is key. They have a great genetics for running coupled with hard work.

      he's the previous wr half marathon holder well under 59 but I don't think there's been a runner who's ran sub 59 and done for example a tour de espana or any major cycle race in a single career. Maybe I'm wrong but I'm not aware of any.
