The most valuable self-defense tool that I carry each and every day is what’s between my ears. God has given one to each human being, and sadly most of us don’t use them well.
Of course your mindset is number one along with your training and experience. Being retired LEO, I always have a pistol and spare magazine, always. I also always have a tactical flashlight (streamlight protac 2L-X). I also carry pepper spray and a good folding knife with pocket clip. I also have years of experience and training that have benefited me greatly in my life. You mentioned avoiding trouble and I cannot emphasize enough how important that is. Our pride is not our friend and should not be allowed in the boardroom when we are making decisions that could affect our families safety. Many road rage incidents are caused because one of the drivers could not back down and yield to a fool. All the tools in the world are useless without the knowledge of how to use them. Good discussion.
Unfortunately I live in the UK and can't carry anything for the dedicated purpose of self defence. However, if the OLIGHT M2R Pro Warrior that I EDC just happens to find its way in to my hand during the kerfuffle then so be it.
I will agree with everyone else in the comments, and say that a good quick mind and good situational awareness, and the ability to keep cool and resillient under pressure are the best self defense tools. Anything else past that is just the tool with which you will implement those things. As far as tools, I cannot own a firearm, at least in my current state residence. So, my goto for home defense , and for when im out camping etc, is my trusty 4 foot long hardwood closet rod. I have 3years of Wahlum training, including forms for staff and spear, so it is the weapon i have the best skills in using. It has served me well on more than one occasion, and it doubles as a bindlestaff and or walking stick when i am out on adventures as well
I completely agree. I always have a 500+ lumen flashlight on my keychain, and have it in my weak-side hand whenever I go out into the night. Keyring on my pinky, thumb on the button. I love that it will stop anybody in their tracks. And that even after the light is gone, they can't see well to pursue me. And I love that I get to take one anywhere, including through TSA checkpoints.
Everytime i buy a flashlight the switch breaks, bought a $30.00 miltary flashlight and the switch broke the same day, and the store had a no returns policy.
Jason covered it pretty well. But the most valuable defensive weapon is your brain, because everything else - whether it is a pencil (a la John Wick), or a selective fire 12 gauge - is just an accessory. But like any useful and dependable weapon, it needs to be properly maintained and prepared. If that primary weapon is engaged, you always have it with you, and you should always be imagining scenarios and what to do, "just in case." This should always include looking for the exit, evaluating possible threats, and staying loose enough but primed to react. And keeping it clear of drugs, excessive booze, and distractions.
1. The clichés: your faith, your mind, your prevention strategies. 2. A firearm 3. A non firearm ranged weapon. 4. A melee weapon. The specific choices for each number depend on a variety of factors such as your need for concealment vs. open carry, your need for carry comfort, laws and social factors dictating what is legal or acceptable, your environment, and etc. For example, if I can not legally carry a firearm, I may be able to carry a black powder revolver and a large knife. If concealment isn't an issue and I can legally carry firearms, I may opt for an ar15 or a shotgun. The answers depend entirely on the specifics of my situation.
I personally want to learn how to use a walking staff. I also want to learn how to fortify my domicile, whether it be a traditional home or a wee camp in the woods. I am most interested in evasion and concealment, especially with regard to shelter.
Good pepper spray and the ability to use it effectively is a pretty good nonlethal tool. It's pretty hard for anyone regardless of how tough they are to continue what they are doing when their eyes and face is on fire. You can always deploy your next line of defense and go to work with that if needed. I've seen some pretty rough people dealt with using pepper spray. They normally stop their bad behavior after receiving a face full of pepper spray.
I don’t go anywhere without my pocket sand… cha cha! Lol honestly the flashlight is one I’ve been overlooking. Can’t get arrested for flashlight defense
Visual acuity is the first step in prevention, reaction, and dealing with any self defense situation. You can’t deal with what you can’t see, so a bright, simple, impact resistant and quickly accessed light is my choice. Bright so as to access a lot of information and deny information via blinding, destroying night vision, creating a flinch response, and taking advantage of the photonic barrier effect. Simple (on or off) with a single mode so as to simplify the operation under stress and prevent accidentally going into a dim “admin” mode under stress. Impact resistant, specifically “potted” where resin has been poured over the electronics inside to prevent them from shaking loose under impact for striking or when waving the light around for signaling for traffic to stop in an emergency. And quickly accessed without much digging around. I personally am a firm believer in the Thyrm Switchback ring/clips even if that does limit the flashlight selection of brands/models. Funny enough, it limits it to mostly lights filling the other requirements. The Switchback allows for faster access and deployment of the light than any other clip or ring option on the market that I have seen.
Managing your emotions, panic kills and it takes up too much time and any hesitation could end up being your last mistake. Actually your Spiritual health should already be a part of your mental preparedness.
Alright, now that I watched the whole video (I took your suggestion and entered the first thoughts that came to mind in the comments) it is also worth mentioning that having a light that you can easily manually strobe or trigger a strobing feature is incredibly useful for disabling the neural networks of potential threats, two legged or otherwise. Try it on your self and experience the disorientation!😂👍🤙🖖
The number one survival/defensive tool is you mind. Parasympathetic breathing, a calm state of mind under threat, control of heart rate, confidence, you get the idea. As far as the tool in your hand, discretion, legality, surprise factor, weight, etc, depend highly on personal ability and skill sets. A little known fact: In the vast majority of public places in the United States, including bars and hospitals, an axe, even a giant battle axe, is totally legal. It's a woodworking tool. A multitool on your belt, same thing. A tactical pen you can break windows with, and store a miniferro in, also an option. A firearm has limited uses and environments. The last thing you want is to miss the target, and hit an innocent. I prefer a combination of lethal, and nonlethal, legal, 'grey man' options.
My intuition followed by my Canemasters grand master cane I need it for ADA but it’s also self-defense and I’ve trained it Second is my Raven cane - metal same as above Then a taser Blade CCW ✌️🇺🇸
I mean yeah for distance which in a lot of cases probably say maybe half of assaults or self-defense needed actions that happen are going to be probably at least half closer and almost reaching distance a firearm would help somebody who is trained with it but ultimately it's reminded that comes first then I would say a firearm you know because this is self-defense and then a blade
A Pagamoggon. (A 2 pound rock attached to a 2 foot stick) Or any modern equivalent: Collapsible baton Tire thumper Small bat War club Can be lethal, or not. Easy to wield and doesn’t require a lot of training.
I conceal carry, however, it does have a limited amt of ammo you can keep on you & you will run out, plus someone with a knife can close the distance before you can draw and fire. I agree with the minds importance, but in combination with some type of full contact martial art. If you are training somewhere that doesn't allow contact and sparring, go somewhere else. If you do not know how to take a hit, many hits and learn how to handle it and keep going, you really won't be able to handle it out of the blue when you are sucker punched or worse.
The best defense is just what you do for you and yours. Your mental preparedness , Doing your best to be less of an apparent victim. Plan , prepare and practice. You can't be all but you can deter. Be smart.
Where I live in the world no one can carry a firearm or a fixed blade knife. So for urban defence I go with a strode flashlight and a defence spray, not pepper not aloud. Use the strobe follow through with the spay buys time for your next move, flight or fight.
Hello 👋 my outdoors friend, thank you for sharing this vital informative video. 😮 I've sold most of my firearms. I do have 🐻 Bear spray. By my front door, in addition to a 9 shot .22 lr revolver. I've sold the Winchesters and the 30-06, in addition to the Ruger.357 Blackhawk. Stay safe out there 🏕️. 😊
I would love to get an exotic back scratcher. If you're not familiar, it consists of a wooden ball bat with many holes drilled into it and filled with 4 inch screws. It'll get the job done. 😂 I tease. Sorry. I live in a very rural place. I wish I had a rifle or some sort of firing apparatus. Mainly for the animals who come around occasionally and threaten my pets. What I have is a siren in a can (works surprisingly well I must say) and a 3 foot long, 2 inch diameter solid tree limb resides next to my door. I haven't had an occasion to test that out for which I'm grateful.
For defense of people or animals is the handgun but it is final and must always be with you. A knife is good but as defense you will get cut ,ask me how I know. Your mind and being alert is far the best situations avoided are the best. In my career of several decades I was engaged in many hundreds of violent confrontations, firearms, edged weapons, hand to hand and several more exotic. To quote the Gunny;" Stay alert, stay alive it is as simple as that"; .
Well yea you are right. I have never considered a flashlight in that respect. Once you are a target of an evil deed would a F L. really deter or make the aggressor lurch into action. I guess it depends on the mind set of the bad guy. I carry a Stinger Tactical Whip which is100% pain compliance but non lethal. I live in a free state I can carry a Becker BK 9 with no issues or my 1911 either one. But I stay aware with my head on a swivel. I stay out of bad places.
I don't carry a pistol because of the liability factor. I carry a 6 inch piece of walking cane as a koobaton and I know how to use it. At a glance it just looks like a piece of wood.
I'm pretty proficient with harsh language.. I think a firearm shouldn't always be considered a lethal option. More often than not, if you produce a firearm, the other guy is goung to leave. If he doesn't, he's probably there to do harm. So then there's the lethal option.
Lol Your flashlight us 1k lumens. My current EDC is 4k and upgrading to 6k soon. Most flashlight folk have min 3k EDC/ duty lights. Nitecore are great and will meet this need, you just need to update.
Took a self defense class from retired cop, a BIC PEN, you can drive that through human flesh pretty easy with some force. Then a flashlight with TAZER.
I took a bic pen and sharpened the ball point and replaced the ball with a needle, aswell as reinforced the barrel as much as I could fit with paper mache.
Self defense class from law enforcement is just about useless, they are over equipped and usually the aggressor. A plastic spoon will go through flesh and ive seen people not phased at all by a tazer. The flashlight is a great idea to blind your opponent if its over 300 lumens and dark outside
Nitecore makes some excellent flashlights. Smith & Wesson also make excellent products. Sig too. If you shoot a guy you'd better make sure there's only one side of the story, YOURS, and your witnesses, lest some aggressive anti-2A Prosecutor wants to use you to make a name for themselves. The law is NOT on your side. Better to pay attention and avoid trouble like you said.
Nunchuc cannot be used to block. No good. A hacking melee weapon illegal in my area. Handgun illegal in my area. I carry an Axehead Tactical Cane by Cold Steel plus a 6.5" folder, plus Dog and Coyote pepper spray. I always wear boots, long trousers, long sleeves and wrap-around sunglasses for liquid attacks. I live in a very dangerous town in the top ten on both the Crime Severity and Crime Frequency Indexes. I am also very old and pretty much seen as prey. I have been preyed upon so often that is why I carry these things.
I have seen pepper spray used at point blank range on a dude wearing glasses and jacked to the eyeballs on some drug and it didn't even phase him. I'm not sure how much was due to the glasses and how much the drugs, but my friend seeing it didn't phase him sprayed again changing the angle to get it under his glasses, again it didn't phase him at all. I think the thing that momentarily confused him, allowing her to spray him a second time was the fact that something was being sprayed in his face.
@ It’s not about blinding, it’s about inhaling and irritating ability to breathe, nasal and throat constriction, a response that is physical not mental as in drug influenced resistance. However, if that person is attacking, escalation to more lethal means may be necessary. (That’s why spray, not gel is more effective.)
What is your go-to self defense option?

You!
Humility is the best self defense tool. Our pride causes us to do or not do things that end up getting us into trouble.
You're describing self protection. Which is valid. It's everything you do to avoid a fight. Self defense is everything you do when you can't.
@@old_timey_prospector Good point.

@mountaingoattaichi
Google is a tool. Use it to find out what a metaphor is.
Situational awareness and positioning self in space to observe, identify, evade, or defend for potential threats.
The most valuable self-defense tool that I carry each and every day is what’s between my ears. God has given one to each human being, and sadly most of us don’t use them well.
Agreed!
What a simple, simple idea, observation and so very, very true.
The best one is your instincts and to know how to improvise with what you carry on your person. ❤

The most valuable self- defense tool is the mindset that you will not be a victim.
Long term, tomahawk or machete. Short-term, pistol with mounted flashlight. I don't carry my mind / instincts, they carry me
I don't carry a pistol because of the liability factor. I carry a 6 inch piece of walking cane as a koobaton and I know how to use it. At a glance it just looks like a piece of wood.

I took a bic pen and sharpened the ball point and replaced the ball with a needle, aswell as reinforced the barrel as much as I could fit with paper mache.
That's why someone invented the tactical pen: a BIC pen under steroids!
Self defense class from law enforcement is just about useless, they are over equipped and usually the aggressor. A plastic spoon will go through flesh and ive seen people not phased at all by a tazer. The flashlight is a great idea to blind your opponent if its over 300 lumens and dark outside
