Iceland is seriously the most epic place on earth. You put it perfectly. There’s never enough time because you keep stopping to photograph everything you see!
Brendan, the sure-thing strategy for back-ups is 1-2-3: 1. Back up frequently to an external HD 2- Back-up from time to time to a HD that is in another physical location (your mom's house, office, what have you); 3- Back-up to a cloud service. I use Backblaze, which charges U$ 5/month per computer (and attached peripherals) data unlimited. I feel safe.
Great stuff in this one. Those beautiful green boots that matched so well with your outfit were the hero of the trip...Seriously though, that was a cool intro you put together, and some great advise.
Good work Brendan again! sometimes i just want to give up because Ive lost things broke my tripod, lost images and surely if my DSLR brakes i will die, or gear i cant have because my income is 0 or very little, your videos literally keeps me going, in the dark times when i need that talk you mention the right things in the right time thanks Brendan.
Great advice, love your videos and your passion and energy always feel like getting out and shooting after watching your vlog thank you for inspiring us all!!
Great video Brendan. I loved the piece of advice about not shooting the 'iconic' locations. I actually think that's good advice for amateurs as well. Shooting the less well known places not only produces some more unique images but also means that you are unlikely to be in a crowd. I do most of my images in and around the area that I live in Spain and I rarely see other photographers. I think being in a place where lots of photographers are trying to get the best shot can really limit your composition choices and, especially if you're just starting out, can be a bit intimidating and lead to rushing the shots to give someone else a chance. Anyway, that's just my view. Keep up the good work
Great info and tips! Currently I'm in that inbetween stage. Totally just wish I could quit my job and shoot all the time, but, like you said, I have to commit and it just takes time. Thanks again!
Thanks for the advice and the journey to Iceland. You are the second video I have watched today talking about following your dream, as a video youtuber or a traveling photographer. And I wish I could be both lol ... But then realized I have a skill that I have already been doing for 50 years that I am passionate about. So I need to put my energy in that skill and on my days off just enjoy learning to take better photos and work on my videos only as a hobby.
Really loved the Iceland vlogs, I never get tired of seeing footage and images from that magical location, it really is a stunning island! Looking forward to your Cornwall episode, i was there briefly this year while on holiday in Somerset, driving on the A39 from Minehead along the north somerset/devon/cornwall coast is a hair raising experience, my poor little Nissan Micra could barely make it up some of those hilly roads, the inclines are insane!
when you say "dive right in" as a pro, that is a general statement, dive into what, stock photography? You have learned a lot coming up in your profession that a newbie would have no idea where to start. (like me, I have no idea if there is a market and how to reach it, and I have been photographing for 35 years) You said someone wanted to buy your Iceland photo because it is different, who wanted the photo, some of your clients, a stranger on instagram? Imagine someone at their house wanting to work at photography, and they are good at it, the experience is a blank wall, what's the next step. I have though, seen you explain your income octopus, that is a general outline of your employment, but there is a lot more to it than that, an inner knowledge of how and who to sell to that you learned somehow and managed not to starve in the meantime. You're fortunate and talented.
Brendan, If you are using the standard phone connection cable for the Mavic that is likely to be your problem. I had phone disconnect problems all the time till I ditched the standard cable and used a normal short usb to micro lead plugged into the auxiliary usb port underneath the controller. Make sure you get one with a right hand 90 degree micro usb plug so it doesn't get in the way of your left hand when you hold the controller. Cheers for the excellent content. Barry
I must admit I started watching your channel when I saw you with Thomas Heaton. I live in Cornwall and as a newbie with a DSLR would be very interested in seeing how you shoot. Where abouts are you going in Cornwall maybe I can recommend some places? :) Love the content dude! :)
Had the same issues with the Mavic and my Iphone. But as I turned my phone into flight mode (no Wifi, no Bluetooth, ...) since then it works perfectly. You will not have the map because you have no internet connection but I guess this is the problem when the smartphone loose the mobile internet connection the Mavic turns off the screen.
Ok, maybe the last firmware will work. I have not updated the Mavic for a long time because I did not fly much for the last couple of month. Wish you good light in England Regards Jürgen
I went to Iceland on a package holiday and though we did not have much time in each place of interest. We did see the northern lights, waterfalls, the capital, whale watching boat tour etc. Yet I still feel I missed a lot of the real iceland. II would love to go back and just take my time travelling around the country. Brendan's vBlogger of Iceland are pretty good at where, and what to see and how to capture the scene !
I also started following you since the Thomas Heaton visit. (not that Ive been following him for that long). It is funny to hear you say your last name, as a dutchy I would pronounce it way different.
Haha, when I'm in The Netherlands I say it the right way. Funny story, until I was about 25 I didn't know how to pronounce my own name. It wasn't until I met some Dutch people travelling that they taught me. haha
koalafrancehk yes!!!!! I love that. If he or anyone would like to critique my ig feed I would love it. I would love critique not for exposure but for the love of photography! I want to learn and become a better photographer. My Instagram is @southernsummitco please check it out!
Three 3 things I learned my @yourtraveladventures tour with you, @photojeffbartlett and @ivanthorphoto : great travel photographers sleep little if at all and subsist on sugar free #redbull; never ever check a bag with important gear and a passport in it; and there is so much to learn about the world through photography no matter what one's age! Four: Icelandic is impossible to learn in 10 days, if ever. Happy travels in Asia.
instead of saying job or no job. what about saying why not work part time like 16 hrs 2 days a week then take photos the other 5 days. then you have at least some money even if it is very little. or work on having a few months of money in the bank to pay your bills with. it is always taken that if you want to take photos then you want to be a pro at it. may be some people want to not get caught up in the business side of photography, but still enjoy taking pictures with no deadlines
Interesting video especially comments about stock photography, it is a dead market unless you have something special. You should listen to Colin Prior's Togcast/Podcast as it is brutally honest about the current day professional photography business
*4th* thing you learned, captioning is a thing. After you've uploaded to the Tube check to make sure closed captions/subtitles are switched *ON* there's a broad spectrum of your audience that watches via captions, family's asleep, can't find headphones, Deaf and Hard of Hearing, and other reasons. This is especially important when the first part or two of a series are already *CC* and the last one in the set isn't whoa dude what'd ya do! -- Cheers from Toronto --

I started following you after seeing an appearance in Thomas Heaton's channel... I really like your energy, passion, and honesty. I'm a fan!
+CostaMesaPhotography thanks! Appreciate the support.
except for that green plastic band

Amazing video with some amazing shots Brendan!
I feel a tinge of sadness that your Iceland series is over! Really makes me want to go back again

Good videos on Iceland! !! When you sell photos to stock what size (in mp ) do you normally use? Thanks in advance.

+Barry Maytum thanks for the input. I updated the firmware and it's fine now.
A lot of great points. Probably one of my favorite videos. Thanks!!!
The epic music to end Jeff segment is the greatest thing ever!! Such a good scene. Jajaja, great cut there dude.

Thanks for the input, you answered my questions, retiring in 19 months, the game plan is landscapes, thanks for the vlogs, they really help.
Hi there. May i know how "big" do u shoot in raw n jpeg? (Me small raw and large jpeg)....
I must admit I started watching your channel when I saw you with Thomas Heaton. I live in Cornwall and as a newbie with a DSLR would be very interested in seeing how you shoot. Where abouts are you going in Cornwall maybe I can recommend some places? :) Love the content dude! :)

I tried that. Still nothing.
However, I updated the firmware after and now it's working fine again.
Ok, maybe the last firmware will work. I have not updated the Mavic for a long time because I did not fly much for the last couple of month.
Wish you good light in England

You provided some great advice for photographers. Keep the advice coming.

Brendan's vBlogger of Iceland are pretty good at where, and what to see and how to capture the scene !
Back up is important that’s why the camera I picked has two card slots and yes both have Sandisk cards in them
I also started following you since the Thomas Heaton visit. (not that Ive been following him for that long). It is funny to hear you say your last name, as a dutchy I would pronounce it way different.
Haha, when I'm in The Netherlands I say it the right way. Funny story, until I was about 25 I didn't know how to pronounce my own name. It wasn't until I met some Dutch people travelling that they taught me. haha
good that you know, because i wouldnt know how to explain in writing. Safe travels !
the lo-fi hip hop is a great touch
I've had Amazon Prime for years and never realised I had unlimited photo storage on their cloud. Thank you for enlightening me! haha
My pleasure!
Nice one Brendan, great series.
great vlog and useful info!
I never knew I wanted to go to Iceland until this video! That was awesome stuff Brendan!
Glad you liked it, man.
Brendan... Maybe u should open a series to have a "critique" to our ig profolio... ? 😊
koalafrancehk yes!!!!! I love that. If he or anyone would like to critique my ig feed I would love it. I would love critique not for exposure but for the love of photography! I want to learn and become a better photographer. My Instagram is @southernsummitco please check it out!
Thanks
The special guest is going to be Thomas Heaton?😅
Moritz Ritter probably. Thomas mentioned that he was going to be working with Brendan again soon.
Thomas should be unique.
