The Burbs is,a,fantastic film, love it. Favorite part is when the "old-man" neighbor slips off the roof when Corey Feldman startled him, lol.
Such an underrated film. Definitely one I re watch a lot. It's funny, witty, has fantastic characters all perfectly blended into its engaging mystery and premise. Holds up very well and has the right amount of "horror-esque" elements while maintaining the comedy of it all. Very quotable and has a fantastic score and theme!
Burbs is quite literally my favorite Hanks movie
I looooove the burbs. The score alone makes it worth watching.
Love the Burbs. Saw it when it came out. Our fam quoted it constantly. The whole “I want to kill everyone” chant thing is gold
Thanks, Adam!
- "Ricky, tell this lamo to get out of your yard."
- "Hey, lamo, get out of my yard! Get out of my yard, lamo!"
My friends and I loved this movie when it came out. Even the score is something special.
God, I love this movie… Underrated gem from my childhood, doesn’t get talked about enough for sure. Definitely watched it 30 plus times.
Great flick. I remember we watched this one at my grandma's house. Love a classic T Hanks comedy
Cannot agree more, Adam. So pleased you're giving it the thumbs up. One of my all time favourite movies. From the ensemble cast of Dern, Hanks, Ducommun, Feldman, Fisher, to the timeless Goldsmith score, to the amazing mesh of comedy and horror that knows perfectly well when to keep things just serious enough to have you invested and gripped. Perfect Saturday night movie.
My entire family thought it was hilarious when we saw it on TV at least mid 1990's
All of us will quote something from this movie, as circumstances in our lives occur!
It is very underrated, and the cast was perfect for each character!
Thanks for liking this as much as we do!! 😂
This is my Halloween movie every year. The zooming in the "This is Walter" scene sealed the deal for me
I LOVE the Burbs!! It's one of my absolute favorite Tom Hanks movies, and Joe Dante is one of my favorite directors. I honestly don't think he is appreciated enough. I mean he gave us: Gremlins, Gremlins 2, Pirhana, Small Soldiers, The Howling, Innerspace, Matinee, Looney Tunes: Back in Action, Explorers, The Hole, and Burying The Ex among others. That's a fantasic, and extremely varied filmography!
The Burbs is a great movie. I grew up watching this movie and it evolved as I grew. When I first saw it at around 7 years old I considered it a horror movie because the creepy neighbours and tom hanks nightmare scenes scared the hell out of me.
As I got older I grew to appreciate the comedy and the movie completly changed genre as I understood it more.
Absolute gem of a movie that has staying power, Ive lost count of the amount of times ive seen it. Its been 30 years since my first viewing and I still enjoy it just as much as I did when I was a kid.
The Burbs is a low key masterpiece
Heck yeah I love that you are showing support to this cult classic by leaving a rotten tomatoes review on it! It's a shame that newer movies get ranked above this gem.
Oh I remember watching this two decades ago, and enjoying it. Have to watch it again. Thanks Adam!
“God I love this street!”
"Hey! Pinocchio, where are you going?" 😂
Pinocchinose! 😂
I remember as a kid running and slipping on wet grass like that by accident. Not fun by any means but made me actually laugh at loud remembering how much that sucked as a kid 🤣
I just recently bought it and showed it to someone new. She loved it. We both watched siskel and eberts review of it. Siskel said he never laughed once. She was like woah wtf lol. Seriously?
I liked Siskel but I never listened to him when it came to comedy or horror. Ebert was more open minded and didn't need everything to be deep.
For me a total cult classic. This is the first time I hear someone call the movie underrated. I saw it when it came to VHS back in the day. There was no RT score back then to even label it that way. And like you said only 38 reviews. There's only one from when the movie actually came out. FRESH from a Top Critic. 😁
“What is that , Slavic?” Is a line I use almost daily and nobody has a clue what I’m talking about.
I've done the same. Also..."sardines?" Few get that at parties.

@@J1283-s1k Great movie.
LOVE this movie!!! It’s a hidden gem . So funny --Walter!!!!!
Yep, this movie is GOLD! Very underrated.
TOTALLY underrated movie!!
Love this movie. Favorite part is when Tom Hanks picks up the stretcher and puts himself in the ambulance. Oh and Pizza dude!
A classic for sure. Yo Rumsfeld!!!
“Yeah! Pizza dude!” 😁
To this day I still can't "I wanna kill, everyone, Satan is good, Satan is our pal"
I literally just watched this last night. Saw it when it first came out and loved it. Watch it yearly since
When he mentions the type of vibe he thought the movie had, and mentioned Ghostbusters, I was thinking that The Burbs has more of a classic Twilight Zone vibe to it, the neighborhood seems sorta like the neighborhood in TZ The monsters are due on Maple street. But instead of every neighbor suspecting each other as being some weird alien creatures, it's more of each neighbor thinking of those one particular neighbors of being weird alien creatures. Those neighbors are sorta Munsters/Addams Family-like in a way, but also Frankenstein/Dracula-like.
Some people just don't get absurdism. Those of us who do can't get enough of it. I was 9 years old with a mullet in 1989, and this movie was an instant fave! Some of the gags felt like homages to tropes and motifs inspired by classic horror movies from the 1950s. True cinephiles - not snooty ones, but we who love movies as art, the weirder the better - will jibe with 'The 'Burbs'.
Edit/Note: This movie is basically 'Rocko's Modern Life' but with Filbert swapped out for Burt Gummer from 'Tremors'.
one of my top Tom hanks films along side "The money pit"... comedy gold!
Hell yes it is!
another great movie from the golden era. i think this was a lazy weekend movie they used to play on TV, commercials and all. i've probably seen it a good 10 times. To this day I still might yell out, "Pizza DUUUUUDE!"
The Burbs is AMAZING. So is Weird Science. Please do that next. Who gives a damn what RT thinks.
I love this film. The music really sells the action. It’s hilariously over the top.
My husband and I have loved this movie for a long time and we totally agree with your review. It’s totally underrated and two thumbs up.
"Ricky Butler says they're nocturnal feeders..."
What an absolutely brilliant film....
I saw this in the theater! Yeah, I'm a hero.
Critics were quite a bit tougher in the 80s and 90s; they were pining for either the Golden Age of Hollywood or the "New Hollywood" of the 70s (or both) and were often frustrated with audiences for embracing the slick high concept new direction studios were taking (and the violent lower budget horror and and action movies from smaller studios). There was quite a big divide between audiences and critics and, unlike today, audiences weren't generally self-conscious or defensive if a movie they liked got poor or mixed reviews.
On UA-cam you can find a 1994 Siskel and Ebert special on the 70s where they bemoan how bland and samey the then "modern" films were in comparison, it's funny because from today's perspective it feels like they don't know how good they had it. I'm sure people will say the same about us in 30 years, sadly.
Some of S and E movie reviews and criticisms make me want to gouge my eardrums out with a screwdriver
You're right they really didn't know how good they had it and those 2 old gits just sound like jumped up ungrateful sods when it came to 80s and 90s movies
I just saw this movie again recently. It's great! My kids loved it too. I highly recommend.
I just recently watched this again and it's still amazing and an all time classic for me. I was 8 when it was released and I think I watched when I was maybe 11 or so from Blockbuster.
Lowkey, understated comedy, but incredibly entertaining. Just some silly fun of whacky suburbanites being nosy about that weird new neighbor.
As a huge Joe Dante fan when I was a young ( GREMLINS!! EXPLORERS!! INNER SPACE!!!) , this movie initialy dissapointed me when I first saw it on VHS...however time has been incredibly kind to it ( and me growing up and understanding it's themes better) and now I consider it my fave Dante flick!
Man you are just pumping out these Patreon requests. Glad to see a lot of folks are able to support you at the mythril level and above, my dude!
Throw me some more cult classics! I’ve been on a binge for throwbacks recently and would appreciate recs of other underrated masterpieces. Thanks!
I also watched this again after many years and had a blast with it. Great ensemble cast, very funny and good music. Kind of loved it!
one of my favorites from childhood
I remember seeing this and Joe Versus the Volcano the year after. Definitely in the camp that this is underrated. But then again, I totally forgot about it until you did this review!
Oh, Joe versus the Valcano. Another gem. I wonder if Adam has seen that one.
... I actually have not.
@@AdamDoesMovies If he picks another one of these Hanks flicks, you're in for a treat, just keep luggage in mind, haha!
@@AdamDoesMovies You and Lindsey would enjoy it. Won't do much for Channel growth, but not everything you watch should be about the Channel. Just one to enjoy. AND you can enjoy some Jump Soda while you are at it. Ha!...Jump Soda. Somebody gets it.
love this movie so much
Saw this in theatre, I remember laughing my ass off! I wasn’t even high! No, seriously!
Great review. Thank you. The Burbs is underrated gold 🥇. I was in college when it came out and we watched it over and over on VHS. Who's going to pick up this mess? Well, you are because YOU are a garbage man. 😂 Classic one liners in this gem. 🏆🎥
Great flick. Very underrated
Classic Tom Hanks...classic Carrie Fisher
I just left a positive review on Rotten Tomatoes about The 'Burbs and I'm glad to report back the audience reviews now have over 50,000 ratings! :D
I love this movie.
Loved the movie growing up!
The Burbs is an absolute cult classic! Those who didn’t like it just have bad taste in movies.
I enjoyed it but thought the ending kind of undermined a solid message that it was getting at. Everything before the last five minutes was great though.
All I remember about The Burbs anymore was that I loved it growing up. I sometimes think about how many films like that would've never gone anywhere if modern review sites and social media existed when they released.
Because I feel like a lot of beloved flicks from the 80s especially are rated so poorly now. Then again, a lot of things considered classics now bombed when they released.
Maybe that would be a cool list. Movies everyone hated when they released that everyone now loves.
Unrelated, a few years ago, I randomly watched the most unexpectedly weird movie I've ever seen that wasn't a comedy or some trippy scifi flick from the 70s.
But I couldn't remember what it was or even who was in it until it just popped up as a new release on Netflix. Vivarium.
I'm not asking you to review it for the channel. Just saying to anyone who hasn't seen it and wants something relatively short that's not good or bad, just kind of "why and wtf", maybe check it out lol
I’ve actually never seen, on the asap list now!
It’s no sound of freedom although Tom Hanks may be in the sequel
And now I WANT MY SKULL 😮
"a soldiers way saves the day"
No spoilers please 🫣
Feldog stole the show in this movie. It is a great movie. We bought the VHS and wore it out. Rotten tomatoes whiffed it.
Anyone remember High Spirits?
Pizza duuuuude!
Sardine?
I'll say it, The Burbs is awesome and better than Big which was always a little overrated.
