Here in the UK my doctor is still puzzled at how my blood pressure has dropped to normal, I told him I stopped sugar and he brushed it off, I was shocked that he wasn't interested in hearing that and he kept on talking about medication, this showed me that even doctors need to understand this sugar and carbs issue.
Most doctors do not want to listen and are not open to addressing diet, they're interested in pushing the pills. I'm a Brit who lives in the States. Very common here, that a doctor won't address diet, they go straight onto the topic of medication which of course only masks the problem. I've had it happen personally, only when I have pushed the issue of food they may reluctantly discuss it. Very strange. This happened regarding my cholesterol level, doctor wanted me to go on a Statin. He said nothing, absolutely Nothing about food or what I was eating. Crazy! I see another doctor for autoimmune disease, same thing. Never brought up the topic of food, or discuss diet etc. They would only offer some input when I mentioned it. These doctors will not volunteer Information regarding diet or any other kind of "alternative" treatment or healing method. It really is up to us to be proactive and find solutions. Good luck on your journey. I'm getting back on the wagon so to speak regarding getting away from sugar and carbs. I find it difficult to stick with long term. And so I go through phases. I definitely have a problem regarding sweets and carbs.
Wow! So for years I have thought I was addicted to FOOD and it pissed me off. I thought if I were an alcoholic I could just stop drinking and be fine. In fact, I know that the "treatment" for alcoholism is to stop drinking completely, not just cut back. Makes perfect sense and it pisses me off that diets just tell me to cut back. You would never tell an alcoholic to drink just a little bit. I always wished that I could just stop eating. Period. But I know I would eventually die. Turns out I am not addicted to FOOD. I am addicted to CARBS. I can just stop eating carbs forever. I won't die without carbs. Great video Dr. Cywes. Thank you.
Obesity is a substance-abuse problem it is not a calorie problem. An obese person is a person with a mental health issue. I keep repeating “find another way” (to manage my emotions and stay away from carbs) on a daily basis. It works.
Wow… Part 2 hit harder than Part 1. She says self righteously… “I would ever take drugs or any substance that is detrimental to my body”…. What a wake up call to learn that my addiction to carbs is my drug of choice. As for the mental health issues… the less said the better 😩. I feel as though I have just gotten off the couch after a counselling session. Now to find new ways of coping with my emotional baggage instead of self soothing with ‘feel good’ carbs. The worse part is you don’t feel good for long, then along comes disappointment, guilt and shame for failing yet again. I need my health back now!💪🏾
@@morphosis7655 Doing much better tks. It hasn’t been easy, especially with a bereavement added to the mix, but my carbs now mostly consists of a few veggies here and there. The weight is slowly coming down and I’m generally feeling better about what I’m consuming on a daily basis.

“Obesity is a substance abuse problem” wow so true. I’ve been employed at a drug/ alcohol rehab for 7 years now. Many patients don’t understand that their drug of choice is not the problem it is a symptom of the problem. Many of the patients are surprised that I can relate to their emotional and mental experiences with addiction although I don’t drink and have never used drugs. The mental mechanism driving the addiction are the same although how it’s expressed in each individual is different. We will typically have a hierarchy of multiple addictions as well.
Sugar, cocaine, PORN---it's all the same: substances that enslave and ruin lives. Carbs are actually the worst addiction in the nation, with porn a close second. Of course, no one watches it, but somehow, it's a billion dollar "industry."

Amen! After giving up sugar and carbs I honestly have to now conciously eat to keep my weight at this level. First time in my life. The last person I’d go to for weight ( or health) advice is my PCP. Fooey.
Thank you Dr Cywes! 13:15 "the primary reason that diets fail; they give you access to your drug of choice and ask you to control it". Yes, that is it in a nutshell. 40 years of dieting eventually taught me that it wasn't me that failed, it was the advice. "Everything in moderation" - WRONG! ....if it includes the substances you are addicted to. "balanced diet" - WRONG! '.....if it includes unnecessary carbohydrates. "eat all food groups" - WRONG! ......if it assumes that carbohydrates are an essential food group. When I eventually decided to try low carb I had no expectation it would work but it did, and I quickly switched into keto, lowing carbs to less than 20, sometimes a lot less. That was 4 years ago and I still practice this way of eating. Why? It works for someone who has an addictive response to carbs. Life is good now and I am happier and healthier in my 50's than ever when younger and constantly struggling/failing on diets. My retirement beckons and I am grateful to be physically/emotionally healthy (no medications or ill health) and also dentally healthy (no work of any kind needed for most of those 4 years, my dentist is very impressed and last time I had my 6 monthly checkup he stated "your teeth are perfect". Job done imo and a lot of money saved over those years in medical/dental bills.

My excess weight was the result of bad information more than anything else. As soon as I learned the science behind keto and intermittent fasting, I started trying to implement them immediately, and I started seeing major results after the first two weeks. I would have done it years ago if I simply had the right information. I was told to eat plenty of grains, to eat low amounts of fat to get healthy, and that calories in/calories out was the only thing that mattered. This is what I was told by the government, by doctors, by nutritionists, etc., and it turned out to be wrong. All it took was learning the actual truth for me to make a change.

Your video touched me in a way no other low carb doc has been able to. Yes! It's addiction! I cried at some points because it felt like you had looked into my soul and understood. Please keep shring your message! So many people need you.
Now that I've lost about 80 pounds using Low Carb and Intermittent Fasting and I'm a normal weight, I've found that if I eat too many Carbs in a meal, my insulin spikes and 1 to 2 hours later I feel hungry. However, it's not real hunger, but low blood sugar. This is a worse feeling of hunger than normal hunger. On the other hand, if I eat a meal with mostly fat and protein, hours after eating, I'm not hungry. I only wish our society understood the problem. Way too many friends, family, and coworkers want to push far too many Carbs on me. I'm sure they don't mean to harm me, but ignorance doesn't stop the harm from coming.
So true. I realized that I would eat certain foods because they relaxed me. Now for the past few months, I'm super low carb, IF and looking for alternate healthier ways to handle stress and relax. I know that like when I used to smoke and could not have just 1 cigarette, I cannot have just 1 cookie, 1 chip, or 1 candy, 1 chocolate bar, cause it will just start my body craving for more. I hated being fat more than I liked sugar and more than I liked carbs, so that has been my motivator
I've had an eating disorder in one form or another since the age of 8. It seems a weird thing to say, but I often wish I were addicted to drugs or alcohol instead. Not that those things are "easier" problems to deal with, but because the solution is abstinence rather than moderation. I think it's therefore helpful for me to be able to take an "abstinence" approach to carbohydrates. I've done keto off and on, and every time I relapse back to carbs, I'm feeling the negative effects of carbs to a greater degree, but I'm still working on internalizing that I suppose. And I have a hard time with the continuously high level of self control I need to say no to carbs, especially in anomalous situations. Anyway, part 1 and 2 were excellent and just what I needed to hear. Alcoholism runs in my family, so I've always been more vigilant about alcohol consumption but I just have other addictions and compulsive behaviors. I look forward to more videos from you!
I’ve been sugar and carb addicted since I was a child exactly as you described. It makes sense that if a young person is marinated in stress growing up the stress-reducing effects described here would start very early in life. I’ve been eating only meat and eggs for the last six weeks and this is the first time in my life I’ve ever been free of the terrible cravings. There are still pressures, but it seems that for some reason, the protein is enough. The mood swings are much better too. When I’m eating keto, I can’t stop allowing myself “safe” sweeteners and eating desserts and fat bombs. It seems that any sweet triggers craving for more. It’s actually a huge relief to be free from the cravings. So much so that I’m considering making it a permanent choice. I look better too because my inflammation is gone. Whatever happens going forward I wish you well.
Same here, been a sweet-ant since childhood, but then it turned into raging alcoholism. It sucks! Carnivore has helped, but I need to be carb free completely, no beer or junk. 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

I really could’ve used this several years ago.😧 I am the oldest of seven and sad to say I have a few siblings that have extreme addictive personalities. They’re battling alcoholism narcotics abuse etc. And for years and years in reaching out and trying to help them get clean and cleared up I came to the realization that I too am the same with an addictive personality. However my addiction was never to drugs or alcohol but food gave me a “high” that I never recognized until working on my own health journey. I’ve always been a good cook and like to entertain and make people happy and family gatherings and big events all revolve around food. And it made me happy to please others and make food that they loved for each celebration. And in the process of trying to make everyone else happy I ate my way into sickness. I started a couple years ago working on my health journey. I’ll be 50 in a few months and I’m determined that in my 50s I will be in better health than I was in my 30s and 40s.

This is by FAR the best explanation of carb addiction I have ever heard. I'm so grateful. My father has been trying to do carnivore for so long but keeps getting sabotages by my Mom who definitely has a carb addiction. I've all but given up on trying to convince them that carbs are the problem.
Absolutely awesome video and help me understand why sometimes I would like some carbs/sweets, etc! I've been on keto/paleo journey for four months and have shed over 30lbs to about 12.5% bodyfat and feel like when I was in college again! What a brilliant explanation!!!! I wish I had heard this 40 years ago. I am a raging carb addict, capable of eating carbs until I literally get sick. I started doing keto several years ago and lost over 120 pounds. I’m happy doing keto for life, but it is still very difficult around the holidays, when I go “off the wagon” to indulge in holiday foods. Getting back on that wagon is hard!
I basically said the same thing to my dr when I was 18 yrs old. He looked at me like I was crazy. I told him my grandfather was an alcoholic and that I was a carboholic. I am now 63 and thankful I found you. I feel validated. Finally!

Most articulate way of advocating a good keto diet I have heard. Explanation clear and we are treated like people of equal intelligence. I go for a short brisk walk of about 15 mins while listening to podcasts or books on audible. Works great and takes my mind off food when I am fasting. Through millions of years of evolution, we are engineered to "gorge" whenever there is food. Now, food is aplenty and people gorge. Throw in carbs and unnatural foods and the natural satiety mechanism to stop after reaching satiety is gone. We all know what happens after that.
Thus the term; comfort food. They're carb addicts. Comfort food for me has always been meat, eggs, and cheese. Thank God I found these dr's that have taught me to eat these healthy foods. I'm getting the body I want and feel better overall. Thank you, Dr. C!

I am so tired of listening to people say but it doesn't make you feel better! You know what? It does make me feel better! Now that I've actually had that validated, I feel free to look for other ways. Right now I have started taking two long slow walks a day, after I eat. Not only has my blood sugar falling another 20 points , I do find that I feel more relaxed, and less likely to have cravings. Thank you so much. I finally feel like I might be able to achieve a semblance of food sobriety.

I absolutely agree. Wonderful explanation of the topic. Now the bad side of it. I did it for about a year, but that was only possible, because I live alone and completely trashed out my pantry and I am just not buying carbs. But after a long time I decided to visit my children and grandchildren for six weeks. There I had a choice - being completely antisocial and not eating with them or being a part of the family and join the meals. Joining the meals is the most basic thing You can do to connect to people. At the end I regained 4 kg and was back into carbs. Now I am back on cold turkey... Not easy that thing.

Really outstanding video. I've been trying to get my 92 year old, obese mother to quit sugar and high carbs. I also told her she's essentially an addict. She lost her husband about 18 months ago, but she was obese before he passed. I'm not sure whether the carb addiction is an emotional crutch, or just an addiction, but she surely is addicted. She was eating big bowls of cut fruit all the time and I got her to stop that (maybe) but then she asked if whole fruit is OK and asked if she can have both an orange and an apple every day. I told her she shouldn't really even have half of one each day. I wish I could get her to stop eating her Ezekiel bread. I think she uses the Biblical name as justification to eat it. And you're so right about an addict being allowed to have some of their drug. Now imagine her shopping in publix, going through that great smelling bakery and seeing all the drugs that she wants. It's next to impossible.
I needed this, due to a break up and bad shit in my private life, i abused carbs as well, gained weight, but its so nice to understand why and it is time to get back at it! Thanks Dr. Cywes!

I fully understand the large pull it has, and for my sake, I really do need to stay keto. I am satisfied when I've had a keto meal. I don't even think about any food items I have in the kitchen. What a brilliant video to watch after part 1 - why isn’t this doctor more well known?! I came across him by chance after watching Dr Berry videos and I’m now catching up on old videos and have subscribed. I watch a lot of ‘Keto’ videos and part 1 and this one explain carbs and addiction in a way I’ve NEVER heard before. I have a very addictive personality so it all makes perfect sense to me!

I had genetic testing done and I am missing the ability to sense fullness. I always thought I was just a pig, but this knowledge helped me understand how I could eat dinner and go next door and eat dinner again with the neighbors. I never felt full. Add sugar and I became a train wreck!! Doing Keto and the structure helps me handle food much better. Artificial sweeteners set off sugar cravings I can’t control. I am sad to not have anymore sweets. Even though others can use the artificial sweeteners, my blood sugar spikes and I cannot control myself to one serving of a Keto sweet, the binge is on!! Why is eating so difficult???

I find Carnivore is easier if you have an eating disorder. Keto can be a slippery slope..for me anyway
Carnivore plus intermittent fasting is a match made in heaven. Recommend start with omitting breakfast, so TMAD. Then transition to OMAD. Bliss!

The mental mechanism driving the addiction are the same although how it’s expressed in each individual is different. We will typically have a hierarchy of multiple addictions as well.

Yes, that is it in a nutshell. 40 years of dieting eventually taught me that it wasn't me that failed, it was the advice.
"Everything in moderation" - WRONG! ....if it includes the substances you are addicted to.
"balanced diet" - WRONG! '.....if it includes unnecessary carbohydrates.
"eat all food groups" - WRONG! ......if it assumes that carbohydrates are an essential food group.
When I eventually decided to try low carb I had no expectation it would work but it did, and I quickly switched into keto, lowing carbs to less than 20, sometimes a lot less. That was 4 years ago and I still practice this way of eating. Why? It works for someone who has an addictive response to carbs.
Life is good now and I am happier and healthier in my 50's than ever when younger and constantly struggling/failing on diets. My retirement beckons and I am grateful to be physically/emotionally healthy (no medications or ill health) and also dentally healthy (no work of any kind needed for most of those 4 years, my dentist is very impressed and last time I had my 6 monthly checkup he stated "your teeth are perfect". Job done imo and a lot of money saved over those years in medical/dental bills.

My excess weight was the result of bad information more than anything else. As soon as I learned the science behind keto and intermittent fasting, I started trying to implement them immediately, and I started seeing major results after the first two weeks. I would have done it years ago if I simply had the right information. I was told to eat plenty of grains, to eat low amounts of fat to get healthy, and that calories in/calories out was the only thing that mattered. This is what I was told by the government, by doctors, by nutritionists, etc., and it turned out to be wrong. All it took was learning the actual truth for me to make a change.

Now that I've lost about 80 pounds using Low Carb and Intermittent Fasting and I'm a normal weight, I've found that if I eat too many Carbs in a meal, my insulin spikes and 1 to 2 hours later I feel hungry. However, it's not real hunger, but low blood sugar. This is a worse feeling of hunger than normal hunger. On the other hand, if I eat a meal with mostly fat and protein, hours after eating, I'm not hungry. I only wish our society understood the problem. Way too many friends, family, and coworkers want to push far too many Carbs on me. I'm sure they don't mean to harm me, but ignorance doesn't stop the harm from coming.
Keto set me free from my cravings. It took a little while to get there but it’s been the most effective way to battle my food addiction.
So true. I realized that I would eat certain foods because they relaxed me. Now for the past few months, I'm super low carb, IF and looking for alternate healthier ways to handle stress and relax. I know that like when I used to smoke and could not have just 1 cigarette, I cannot have just 1 cookie, 1 chip, or 1 candy, 1 chocolate bar, cause it will just start my body craving for more. I hated being fat more than I liked sugar and more than I liked carbs, so that has been my motivator
I've had an eating disorder in one form or another since the age of 8. It seems a weird thing to say, but I often wish I were addicted to drugs or alcohol instead. Not that those things are "easier" problems to deal with, but because the solution is abstinence rather than moderation. I think it's therefore helpful for me to be able to take an "abstinence" approach to carbohydrates. I've done keto off and on, and every time I relapse back to carbs, I'm feeling the negative effects of carbs to a greater degree, but I'm still working on internalizing that I suppose. And I have a hard time with the continuously high level of self control I need to say no to carbs, especially in anomalous situations. Anyway, part 1 and 2 were excellent and just what I needed to hear. Alcoholism runs in my family, so I've always been more vigilant about alcohol consumption but I just have other addictions and compulsive behaviors. I look forward to more videos from you!
I’ve been sugar and carb addicted since I was a child exactly as you described. It makes sense that if a young person is marinated in stress growing up the stress-reducing effects described here would start very early in life. I’ve been eating only meat and eggs for the last six weeks and this is the first time in my life I’ve ever been free of the terrible cravings. There are still pressures, but it seems that for some reason, the protein is enough. The mood swings are much better too. When I’m eating keto, I can’t stop allowing myself “safe” sweeteners and eating desserts and fat bombs. It seems that any sweet triggers craving for more. It’s actually a huge relief to be free from the cravings. So much so that I’m considering making it a permanent choice. I look better too because my inflammation is gone. Whatever happens going forward I wish you well.
Same here, been a sweet-ant since childhood, but then it turned into raging alcoholism. It sucks! Carnivore has helped, but I need to be carb free completely, no beer or junk.

I really could’ve used this several years ago.😧 I am the oldest of seven and sad to say I have a few siblings that have extreme addictive personalities. They’re battling alcoholism narcotics abuse etc. And for years and years in reaching out and trying to help them get clean and cleared up I came to the realization that I too am the same with an addictive personality. However my addiction was never to drugs or alcohol but food gave me a “high” that I never recognized until working on my own health journey.
I’ve always been a good cook and like to entertain and make people happy and family gatherings and big events all revolve around food. And it made me happy to please others and make food that they loved for each celebration. And in the process of trying to make everyone else happy I ate my way into sickness.
I started a couple years ago working on my health journey. I’ll be 50 in a few months and I’m determined that in my 50s I will be in better health than I was in my 30s and 40s.

This is by FAR the best explanation of carb addiction I have ever heard. I'm so grateful. My father has been trying to do carnivore for so long but keeps getting sabotages by my Mom who definitely has a carb addiction. I've all but given up on trying to convince them that carbs are the problem.

What a brilliant explanation!!!! I wish I had heard this 40 years ago. I am a raging carb addict, capable of eating carbs until I literally get sick. I started doing keto several years ago and lost over 120 pounds. I’m happy doing keto for life, but it is still very difficult around the holidays, when I go “off the wagon” to indulge in holiday foods. Getting back on that wagon is hard!
I basically said the same thing to my dr when I was 18 yrs old. He looked at me like I was crazy. I told him my grandfather was an alcoholic and that I was a carboholic. I am now 63 and thankful I found you. I feel validated. Finally!

I go for a short brisk walk of about 15 mins while listening to podcasts or books on audible. Works great and takes my mind off food when I am fasting. Through millions of years of evolution, we are engineered to "gorge" whenever there is food. Now, food is aplenty and people gorge. Throw in carbs and unnatural foods and the natural satiety mechanism to stop after reaching satiety is gone. We all know what happens after that.

Thank you so much for saying that eating carbohydrates does produce endorphins, it does relax you, and it does make you feel better . I am so tired of listening to people say but it doesn't make you feel better! You know what? It does make me feel better! Now that I've actually had that validated, I feel free to look for other ways. Right now I have started taking two long slow walks a day, after I eat. Not only has my blood sugar falling another 20 points , I do find that I feel more relaxed, and less likely to have cravings. Thank you so much. I finally feel like I might be able to achieve a semblance of food sobriety.

I absolutely agree. Wonderful explanation of the topic. Now the bad side of it. I did it for about a year, but that was only possible, because I live alone and completely trashed out my pantry and I am just not buying carbs. But after a long time I decided to visit my children and grandchildren for six weeks. There I had a choice - being completely antisocial and not eating with them or being a part of the family and join the meals. Joining the meals is the most basic thing You can do to connect to people. At the end I regained 4 kg and was back into carbs. Now I am back on cold turkey... Not easy that thing.

Really outstanding video. I've been trying to get my 92 year old, obese mother to quit sugar and high carbs. I also told her she's essentially an addict. She lost her husband about 18 months ago, but she was obese before he passed. I'm not sure whether the carb addiction is an emotional crutch, or just an addiction, but she surely is addicted. She was eating big bowls of cut fruit all the time and I got her to stop that (maybe) but then she asked if whole fruit is OK and asked if she can have both an orange and an apple every day. I told her she shouldn't really even have half of one each day. I wish I could get her to stop eating her Ezekiel bread. I think she uses the Biblical name as justification to eat it. And you're so right about an addict being allowed to have some of their drug. Now imagine her shopping in publix, going through that great smelling bakery and seeing all the drugs that she wants. It's next to impossible.

Carbs are so very addictive e, giving up cigarettes years ago,was very difficult but,giving up carbs is just as bad.i honestly would rather have a bagel than a steak.i just have to deal with it. I had genetic testing done and I am missing the ability to sense fullness. I always thought I was just a pig, but this knowledge helped me understand how I could eat dinner and go next door and eat dinner again with the neighbors. I never felt full. Add sugar and I became a train wreck!! Doing Keto and the structure helps me handle food much better. Artificial sweeteners set off sugar cravings I can’t control. I am sad to not have anymore sweets. Even though others can use the artificial sweeteners, my blood sugar spikes and I cannot control myself to one serving of a Keto sweet, the binge is on!! Why is eating so difficult???
