Improv tip #1 - Motivic improvisation

Using a musical motif it’s a great way to add variety to your solos and create contrast with just playing lines over the changes! Make sure your idea is simple and not too long, so that it’s easy to manipulate and develop and also immediately recognizable by the listener. Try to stick with it for as long as possible, testing your creativity. Here’s a chorus on “It Could Happen to You” using that approach.
