Improv tip # 5 - Chord melody
Being able to harmonically support the melody of a tune is crucial to the success of a good solo performance and to ensure that the song is learned properly. Depending on the tune and instrument you play, you might have more or less tools at your disposal to arrange it. Using your creativity and knowledge of the instrument to overcome any difficulties you might encounter is key. Here is a solo bass chord melody arrangement of “You Must Believe in Spring”.

Improv tip #4 - Chord soloing
Переглядів 492 роки тому
If your instrument allows, it’s fun to play a chorus or two of chords during your solos. It’s a great way to take a break from playing melodic lines and refresh the listener’s ears. Making sure to move your voicings whenever possible is key to keep the music flowing, aiming for a smooth voice leading. Here’s a chorus over Duke Ellington’s “Isfahan”.
Improv tip #3 - Pentatonics
Переглядів 832 роки тому
Playing pentatonic scales is an awesome way to add a more angular and modern phrasing into solos. It makes a strong contrast with a more diatonic and chromatic approach, while allowing the player to use the same scale over several different chords. Skipping some steps here and there creates more 4ths in the lines and opens up the register of the instrument with just a few notes. Here’s a short ...
Improv tip #2 - Chord tone soloing
Переглядів 623 роки тому
Try to limit yourself to use only the chord tones (1-3-5-7) of an harmonic progression for your improvisation. It ensures that the form and the basic harmony of the tune are under control and at the same time it stretches your creativity, both rhythmically and melodically, creating more angular lines. Here’s a short improvisation applying this concept over the changes of “Alone Together”.
Improv tip #1 - Motivic improvisation
Переглядів 533 роки тому
Using a musical motif it’s a great way to add variety to your solos and create contrast with just playing lines over the changes! Make sure your idea is simple and not too long, so that it’s easy to manipulate and develop and also immediately recognizable by the listener. Try to stick with it for as long as possible, testing your creativity. Here’s a chorus on “It Could Happen to You” using tha...

Molto bello
Oh man. Artistic level beyond that of any mortal man. Ben is like from another planet.
when i was a freshman in college i emailed ben monder asking to study with him and his response was worth more than the entirety of my time in music school.
@CPA Jazz Guitar Take the manager's position at Duane Reade
No one is capable of playing the guitar quite like Ben Monder.
Insane!
This truly is next level Artistry! At first you see how they play slow and nonchalantly, and absentmindedly, not even following on each other, and you are like, Hmm Okay... and suddenly they hit the last note, then only do you realize, and you go like, What, what have just happened??? I had to watch it twice myself. Totally awesome!
+Edouard Gahini Thank you for your kind words Edouard!
Un pò di emozione, ricordando la M.J.O, le composizioni e il gesto nel dirigere del MAESTRO sono inconfondibili. Grazie Massimo
