I have a student teacher conducting this. I got 1st part trombone, literally looked to the person next to me and said time to destroy our lips. This piece is a counting nightmare, and gets kinda high, but is so much fun to play
We had this piece when I was in the band 1972 through 1976. Our band director must have loved it!!! I miss playing this and other pieces and being a part of the orchestra!!
We played this our band as well. We did it in Junior High, and again in HS around the same time period as yours. I always loved this song. Don't know why it popped up in my head tonight. lol!
Same here a lot of the pieces I’ve played when I was in school many years ago I still revisit it it always has a special place in my heart I miss being part of the band too !! This piece is amazing one of my favs it’s so much goodness in it lol
Absolutely love this piece! Played it during several concert seasons in HS as a snare drummer (Manor HS, Portsmouth, VA...'73-'77). Talk about a challenge! But I was lucky enough to be in a very, very talented HS band with incredible band directors during my four years. Thank you Mr Nelhybel. Brilliant composition!
Playing this song in highschool band right now. I'm in 10th grade, in the percussion section, playing the chimes. There's not much for me to do, but the song is great to listen to. One of those songs where I'm satisfied even if I don't do much. Love it
@@ianarias8353 Dude, I had the chimes part. I love it. I also tried to play the the glockenspiel part at the meno mosso (probably not how you spell it) because we had an extra, but our section leader just decided to have one glock player throughout.
We played this song for a band festival when I was a youngster. We won best junior high band in the state of Louisiana that year. Straight superiors across the board. It is a beast but oh so fulfilling when you are done. Good luck
I played this song in concert band in high school one of my favs however this piece sounds like it could go for marching band too it has a marching sound too it . I love this though all these years later still very good
I'm playing this song, along with bugs, Songs of the whalemen, Waltz No. 2, Sneak Attack, Rippling watercolors, and Ginger marmalade at my final 9th grade band concert next Thursday!
Played this for band in 12th grade, our advanced band class was so small it was mixed middle high school so the song didn't sound the same. The band is even smaller now this year and I am going to help volunteer. Maybe we'll play this tune again someday.
Ben Larsen I’m in 7th grade and were playing this song with eight grade. It’s hard for us let alone you guys, and we have been playing high school music since 6th grade at where I go to school at
It’s only been 3 days and I have my regular band music down and so the senior high band conductor is my lesson teacher so he’s making me learn the songs and this is one of them (I’m in 8th) and this is my fav one
I'm desperately trying to write a reflection on when our high school band played this, but I keep getting pulled into this BOP help! Sounds fun for perc, even tho I play clarinet... :0
I played oboe in this piece in 8th grade. Didn't care that the flutes were playing the same thing, this song has so much driving energy, it's always enjoyable to just hear, let alone play... even 40 years later.
My band is and our director said we’re playing it better than his community band. But then he gets mad at us for not playing it right. Like how do you expect us (hs&8th)to play it when his band (adults) can’t even play it
Boi I played this in 7th grade in the “honor” band with the 8th graders and I thought that it was so hard but looking back just one year later I realize that this really wasn’t that bad!
I need help determining the tempo in the Meno Mosso Section at measure 87. Half the recordings I've heard take the tempo fast, the other half takes it slow.
I'm having the same problem too bro. I think it should be in the middle but not too fast because if Meno Mosso means less quick. The way the recording plays it is pretty okay because the whole song is fast but if you look up the way that this Western University band on youtube plays is pretty good. So I would rather take it at that band's temp man.
@@hancrobeats5963 i think at a slower tempo was nelyhbel's intent played this late 70's almost all bands during that time played the middle section at a true meno moso
Our band teacher is new and he gave me 1st trombone and I am now crying.

Amazing to see how this song is still being performed by high school bands! I still remember it from 40 years ago!!!
I played this in High school years back it still sounds good till this day a masterpiece lol
unc
Love this! Played it in highschool, 1987 I think... still in my head today!
Playing this song in highschool band right now. I'm in 10th grade, in the percussion section, playing the chimes. There's not much for me to do, but the song is great to listen to. One of those songs where I'm satisfied even if I don't do much. Love it
All parts are equally important!!!
I'm a seventh grader in an eighth grade band and we're playing this! it's a counting nightmare but I really like it!
The chimes part needs more respect. They rest for 100 measures and play for 23 and dont play the rest.
@@ianarias8353 Dude, I had the chimes part. I love it. I also tried to play the the glockenspiel part at the meno mosso (probably not how you spell it) because we had an extra, but our section leader just decided to have one glock player throughout.
What instroment, I play Tuba
I'm a freshman and we're playing it. It should really be in 5/4 because oh lord the counting 💀💀💀

Absolutely love the ending
Playing this for concert band in high school
i play bass clarinet in my class, this song is definitely fun because at little bits you can hear me :]
I also played Bass Clarinet and played this in High school Bass Clarinetvwill always and forever rule ! 😊
Played this in 7th/8th grade and loved it! Still do decades later.
There’s no way, I’m an 8th grader who’s up in highschool band playing this aswell as 7/8th grade music but there’s still no way
@@flyingshoe6298 Seriously I played this exact music when I was 12-13 years old and I’m 49 now.
@@tuskegee7294 damn, it’s really fun to play tho I can’t deny
Same I'm a 8th grader playing this right now
Dang I'm a 10th grader playing this and I'm fighting for my life. I HATE THOSE TIES
This is my favorite song of all the songs we’re doing for concert season.
this is not a song, this is a musical piece, concert band composition, or modern
work. A song has words.
I played this song in concert band in high school one of my favs however this piece sounds like it could go for marching band too it has a marching sound too it . I love this though all these years later still very good
Played percussion in high-school band on this... what a nightmare of a song to count. Good memories though! Was back in 1995!
I'm playing this song, along with bugs, Songs of the whalemen, Waltz No. 2, Sneak Attack, Rippling watercolors, and Ginger marmalade at my final 9th grade band concert next Thursday!
My band teacher gave this song. He’s finally redeemed himself🎉
Played this in 8th grade back in 1971! Great piece!!
It still sounds good !! A classic indeed 🎺😌
Played this for band in 12th grade, our advanced band class was so small it was mixed middle high school so the song didn't sound the same. The band is even smaller now this year and I am going to help volunteer. Maybe we'll play this tune again someday.
I’m playing this in middle school!?
I'm in 9th grade and were playing this in band
Ben Larsen I’m in 7th and we’re playing this

Played this in high school...fun for the percussion, not so much for the oboe. Octave down from the flutes the whole time? Meh.
im playing this in 6th grade well part of it at least
I played oboe in this piece in 8th grade. Didn't care that the flutes were playing the same thing, this song has so much driving energy, it's always enjoyable to just hear, let alone play... even 40 years later.
I LOVE NELHYBEL
This is my drum major audition 😭😭😭
Im in the saint louis wind symphony youth ensemble and we have 5 total rehearsals, already did one, to get this and 3 other songs ready :/

Omg this is my situation right now!!
Though it’s not really that hard for me. I kinda just fall into the beat before I get lost in the rests.
this piece sounds like someone said “writing music can’t be that hard” and then tried to write a piece
I'm learning this now and the rests keep throwing me off😭
Count those rests!!!

I'm using excerpts from the snare and timpani parts for a chair test, wish me luck
We played it but had no timpani or toms parts :( sounds way better here than when we played it. But great tune and a big bop!!
No timpani? How can you even play this song without the timpani? The section following right after the turn would sound so off.
