There is a great story attached to this piece. Claude T Smith was a 1st chair Horn player in college. His Senior year a Freshman beat him out for 1st chair. Many years later Col. Arnald Gabriel asked Smith to write a piece for the Air Force band that they could not play, so he wrote Festival Variations. Coincidentally the Principal Horn player in AF band was actually the person who beat him out for 1st chair in College. The guy came up to Smith during the rehearsal and said, “I absolutely love the piece, but did you have to make the Horn parts so damn hard?”. Smith looked at him and said, “GOTCHA!!!!”

Speaking of insane music programs: once, I played Pilatus by Reineke, the second clarinet concerto of Navarro, Harry Potter (with the famous horn quartet) and Pompei by Piña xD I also played Mata Hari, Jeanne d'Arc by Poelman, Miss Saigon and Reminiscencia Gitana in ONE concert 🥵😅😂😂
All 4 parts in this piece cover at least 2 plus octaves plus are Uber exposed. This piece would give a professional ensemble a really hard workout. I have seen this appear on state lists for high schools but it makes me wonder how students could handle the challenges.

Interesting how a piece they could not play has become basic literature and has been recorded by a bunch of different wind ensembles.
