you and rckicks have shown me rcs i never knew about or showing builds of the rcs i was dreaming about as a poor kid...im not even collecting now..im living my rc dream watching you guys
This was my very first Tamiya RC car. Parents got it for my Christmas from a shop in Southchurch, Southend on area, called Hobbyhorse and I remember opening it Christmas morning and ABBA’s Super Trooper on the radio, so whenever I hear that tune I can smell that Tamiya smell when you open the box, I was sooo excited. My buddy had a Sandscorcher and of course I couldn’t keep up with him... but we still had a blast. So, thanks for the memories again fella!
Oh and I never broke a torsion bar, lucky I guess, but I did break a few front hubs (where the brass bearings sit) the plastic was a lot more brittle if I recall. I sent a letter to Tamiya Japan and they sent me like, 4 spru’s back with the parts on!
Special to you means more than special because of features/ performance. I was recently reunited with, and got back my old Kyosho Turbo Ultima that I gave away 30 years ago. It means the world to me to see it untouched just the way I built it so long ago. I love and share your passion for the hobby.
Still run my Cheetah at meets now, had it since my dad built it for me when it was brand new. The most special RC I own. Everytime I even just pick it up the memories come flooding back.
MASSIVE CONGRATULATIONS on getting this kit. Being from the ARMY I had to get both FAST ATTACK vehicles. Can't wait to see the build. Thanks for sharing.
This was my first Tamiya back in 83. Got it second hand from a school mate. Suspension bars were all broken too used string to keep the car from dragging the floor, came with 3 gear choices in the gearbox, mine was fast and wheel spinned like crazy. Much better looking than the Cheetah, Cheetah has a shorter wheel base than the XR311. The only reason people want the Cheetah is because they sold less so are harder to find. Was the first rc to come with fully independent suspension front and rear. Oh and I still have mine too!
Looks like a very interesting kit especially the chassis and gearbox. Never ceases to amaze me how varied the Tamiya kits are. Thanks for showing this one.
The only way to build this kit is with aftermarket-suspension upgrade metal kit available from RC Channel. It's simply awsome!. Keep up the great work Glenn, we appreciate all the great content.
Stumbled across your channel. Really enjoyed this build, brought back so many memories of Christmas late 70’s. I got a Lamborghini Cheetah, same chassis. Some time later I re-bodied it with the XR311, probably cos I wrecked the Cheetah. Subscribed and look forward to watching more…
Good morning Glen!!! Great video as always!!! Saw this one a while ago and didn’t realize it was a re te. Great info!!! Gotta say I’m kinda bummed you don’t put out build videos but looking forward to what you have in store for us with this build and future videos!! Thanks buddy and again great video!!
This will definitely be built on the channel in the normal style 😊 I’m not completely doing away with that format, just having a good break from it 🤓👊🏻
Lovely, this was my first Tamiya in 1980, put a Tamiya 7.2v battery in mine and it went well, but one of the large pinion gear's ket separating from a shaft. Lincoln model shop while I was based up at Scampton.
Always wanted one of these back in the day, I can remember flicking through my Mum’s Gratton Catalogue “I think it was called!” Wanting & probably nagging my poor Mum for one, I do still have my original Ford Ranger also from one of my mum’s Catalogs from the late 1970’s early 80’s I think? which is mint with all original parts (no re-re parts as you call it) which is a shelf ornament. Loving your vid’s on the retro stuff & will be watching this build 👍
Very nice Glen!!!!!. Really looking forward to seeing you get this one done!!!!!. I’m old enough to remember these back in the day.. Going into the early eighties there were still a couple of them knocking around in the model shop I used to go in.. So pleased you have one.. and you know I love the old stories and memories of back then... Blimey Glen it really does confirm I am old🤣🤣.
Looking forward to this build! If I may be au contraire - not having a diff will make the back end easier to spin out. Just weld up the diff in a rwd car then take it into a corner ;) :D
Glad to see this on the channel Glenn. I've had a couple of the rere. I did the full metal suspension upgrade from rc channel. Cost a lot but it's transformed it... 👍
The build videos are the stuff We love and the outdoor runs make Us Psyched to get out too! EuroRC obviously have great tastes like the rest of Us watching, hahaha. Beauty TL, kicking freckle Friend.
that was my first car. I raced it. it was slow but was good enough to keep up with sand scorchers etc but not the frog. which was my second car. I still have 3 -5 cars in the shed with 2 unfinished bodies (one painted in my racing blue metallic paint and the other not touched). Ball racers do help and was a must for racing along with replacement drive shafts. Good luck with the build and remember you will need modelling putty for the driver as arms fit was never that good.
Great video!!! Definitely just use the bronze bushings, bronze is soft and naturally self lubricating, and for what that car is, they would be perfectly good! Plastic bearings however is another story! I'm looking forward to your build video!!!
I really love this Tamiya rc, the iconic XR311, I’ve built and sold about 5 of these, I’ve got one at the minute and have no intentions of selling it, but for some reason I have absolutely no interest in the Cheetah. What always surprises me about this rc is the turn of speed out of it and I have it geared for slow speed running, and that’s too fast for me, lol 😂 nice choice for the video, loved 🥰 it. 😎👍👍👍 Ps...... the tyres on the original version are much softer than the re-re, they almost need sponge 🧽 inserts. Pls....... I built mine using super glue and 2 part epoxy for the body shell, epoxy down both sides and inside of the body shell.
I prefer this to the Cheater 100% I think it’s the wheels that make the difference, I have no intention of fitting ball bearings (first time ever) I may go for the low gearing (first time ever) it’s going to be rarely used and it’s not for razzing about it’s to crawl about at slow speeds.... Glen after 2 years I have finally found a kit we both united on! Big up to the XR 311
I believe the likelihood of them revisiting the older RC kits is increasing as time passes. Unfortunately, Tamiya is in trouble: the successor passed away, their demographic is aging out, and other manufacturers are displacing them. What Tamiya really has going for it is nostalgia, and they need to act upon that while they still can. Otherwise, they need to debut a new product as innovative as the original 934 RC kit was in 1976.
@@TAMIYALegends It’s a nice little build. You definitely feel the history of Tamiya and the hobby in general when assembling this kit. The bodywork, which I didn’t do yet, is basically like building one of Tamiya’s plastic model kits. The reason it got delayed was because I wanted it to be a Jokermobile, but I have already built one out of a CMX. So now, I think, I’m going to finally finish the body as a red racing buggy with stripes and numbering, just as soon as the rainy weather ends here. I think it is an important kit to build for anyone into the hobby of constructing RC cars. Do I think it will be a runner? Not a chance... unless I can fit different suspension and steering arms to it somehow. The body is one of the most detailed Tamiya makes imho, so I’ll never build it to move very fast, but different suspension would be nice.
Right on .. there was one for sale on Kijiji for almost two weeks it was up for sale for 300 dollars. I wanted to bounce on it and I check today it was gone of the Kijiji site and I see u made video of it so I thought u picked it up..
Can’t not love the XR311👍 the cheetah was my first car, so I had to get the re re XR311, just to have built one myself. On mine, I used 2 part epoxy resin to hold the 2 big bits of the body together. Helps stop it shaking apart when you run it. It’s quite good fun with a sport tuned motor in😂
Wow Glenn, you have convinced me to want to !get this vehicle. There is one at a local hobby shop that I know about, only one I think I got to grab it before it’s gone
You have me excited about this one Glenn! I will enjoy the build vid but can't wait for the running vid! I would take it to your track!😉 maybe after the crawling country run! Just to see it kick up some dust at a sensible speed of course! No jumping!! I do know quite a bit about the XR311 as l have had an original before for a brief time in the past but l did not know about the first rere details in 2000! I need to find a list of order with all the rere tamiya have done in release order to date! Maybe someone knows a link? Anyway Great stuff mate you really do keep it interesting on your channel 😎👍
Thanks as always for watching my friend it’s massively appreciated 😊😊😊. Yeah regarding that list I haven’t been able to find one yet but I’m still looking 😎

Probably not, and even if I did it would definitely be a 'shelf queen', I would not want to risk running it. Great video as always, looking forward to the build video!!
You got to go full Monty from RC Channel, a company from Taiwan, and add a winch roller guide up front. You will know what I mean once you see it. But will cost more than the entire kit. I think the kit comes with bushing only.
Haha yes I’ve already contacted them to see if they want me to do that full custom build on the channel, but not had anything back from them unfortunately 😬😬😬
That is a cool kit! Never considered one but have thought they look cool. Be interesting following this build. Great information about the kit and I love that it is very close to the original release, as confirmed by a cool sticker! 👍🏼
I just picked one up yesterday. It must be an even new re-release because the box is stating that it is comes with a Hobby Wing ESC. I can wait to get started on it.
Oh the days of bodging RC cars back together with anything you could get your hands on! My first buggy was a Striker with a Kyosho Le Mans 240ST motor. You'll be shocked to learn that it broke fairly quickly. After about six months the entire front end was pretty much held together with wire, epoxy, and hope. I should probably say these were the good old days, but they really weren't. Still, if they rere'd the Striker, I'd buy one for sentimental value (I know Tamiya won't rere it, because they were pretty rubbish).
@@TAMIYALegends Oh, without a doubt! I still have very fond memories of skidding the Striker around the red ash football pitch at our school. It was a woefully fragile thing, but I'd buy another one in a heartbeat (if I hadn't just dropped coin on a Top Force - mainly because of watching all of your stuff!)
I have this re-release car. This kit builds more like a plastic model kit than an R/C car. For example you will need glue to assemble this kit. Also some paint of course. I even remember when I was a kid when this kit could be purchased at a hobby shop. The kit actually had written on it "Suitable for radio control". Which confirms what I was saying about this kit. Maybe it is more of a plastic model kit than an R/C car. Thoughts?
I had one of those, and the unit I had, the torsion bars were spring steel.. interesting... learned something ... Clever.. I am curious to see which torsion springs come in them now? I bet it will be the spring steel or piano wire... Clever little car.. and YES.. were they so dang slow.. Also YES.. the turf tires are also neat.. reminded me of lawn mower rear tires.. lol..
Xr311 it's rear end is considered a posi rear end meaning like you said no differential action it's still a differential but without the differential action considered a positive differential also I see people put brushless motors in these and I've seen them at least do 30 plus miles an hour with the new stuff in it yeah they still have the torsion bar stuff in it but I think they upgraded the materials for it.
Have they done anything to improve the durability of the torsion bars/suspension as far as you can tell or is it exactly the same as it was originally?? Looking forward to seeing this thing go!
This is more like it! I always thought this was a forerunner to the military Hummer. You have to take it over the jumps on your test track or I will send you over a tutu and a pair of pink stilettos to wear on your next video.

Haha yeah I know exactly what you mean although I do look back on my memories almost romantically 🤣👊🏻
Looking forward to this one. Personally, I love a nice long build video.
Haha excellent coming soon my friend 😊😊😊
Globalism is weird. British bloke in Canada talking about Japanese stuff on American platform sponsored by a Finnish company...
Haha yeah that’s crazy 🤣👊🏻
Thanks for watching
Try saying that fast when you are tipsy 🥴 lol , actually love that emoji, looks like me with a ski full.
And I am in the Caribbean watching while my GrassHopper charges up :)
I’ve watched this video 3-4 times. I want one of these real bad to add to the collection. Can’t wait to find one somewhere.
Yeah it’s definitely one to have in the collection, extremely different build and design from what we are use too 🤩🤩🤩
I have this re-release car.
Glenn, what happened about the carbon count contest?
That was done ages ago my friend, the draw video is on the channel 👊🏻
Love all the military rc's
Yeah me too I need a FAV now Paul 😎👊🏻
Great vid 👍
Thanks buddy 😎👊🏻
Very cool don't think I ever knew about it!
this is a shelf queen Glenn :)
Yeah it will be mainly on the shelf, but I’ll definitely one or two running videos made 😊👊🏻
Looks cool Glenn but what happened to the 3 wheeller?
It’s on the ever growing to do list Tony 😅👊🏻
Have they done anything to improve the durability of the torsion bars/suspension as far as you can tell or is it exactly the same as it was originally?? Looking forward to seeing this thing go!
Yeah I believe the plastic torsion bars are no more and been replaced with metal 😅👊🏻
Hello from Austria being a Bradford lad my self I would say that you would of bought it at Carter's on Bridge Street,or maybe at Morley model's .
This is more like it! I always thought this was a forerunner to the military Hummer. You have to take it over the jumps on your test track or I will send you over a tutu and a pair of pink stilettos to wear on your next video.
Hey you have NO idea what I’m wearing under that table Alan! I could well be already in high heels and stockings 🤣🤣🤣
I stood in the local photo/rc shop and drooled over this when I was nine or ten. My parents were smarter than me and got me a Frog.
How about a Sand Scorcher body on this chassis? Could look good.
Just add to my wish list.
Excellent Dan 😎👊🏻
Cool. Can’t wait to see it on brushless/3S.
Just kidding.
Haha yes a XR311 speed run series 🤣
Cool :))
Thanks for watching 😎👊🏻
