The A-Team Is Actually Kind Of Good

- in 1983, our TV screens were glowing with the high octane action and explosions of Frank Lupo and Stephen J. Cannell's The A-Team, a show that would put a team of wild mercenaries against high-profile criminals. Then in 2010, years after Mr. T and George Peppard had retired their badges, we were treated to a silver screen adaptation of the show starring the likes of Liam Neeson, Bradly Cooper, Jessica Biel, Quinton Jackson , and even Patrick Wilson. The film was ultimately forgotten by audiences almost immediately and has since joined the ranks of underwhelming remakes in Hollywood. However, is it REALLY that bad? We don't think so. Let's get into it.

"Are they trying to shoot down the drone?" "(Bored) No, they're trying to fly the tank." - best line in the movie!
The unrated version is even better.
I love the unrated version. Tge editing is so much smoother. Not as choppy and is just a funner movie period.
@@fabianmorales4203 Yeah, it's fantastic! It's a tragedy that they never made a sequel to this!
I agree.
Did not even know that existed ok found my weekend watch
Hard disagree on unrated version. Pacing issues and just gets too unrealistic at times. Theatrical is better.
This film is so good. Should have been a trilogy
Not to mention the spinoff potential 😮
@@JoBloOriginals I enjoyed the movie and unfortunately disappointed it didn't do well to warrant sequels. It was a fun movie. The flying tank was my favorite scene. I can see them converting an old Honda Civic into a tank in the sequels. How do you think they could have gone into spinoffs?
Criminally underrated film. An absolutely awesome and entertaining ride
AGREED.I bought this movie from a pawn shop on dvd for a $ 1.00 and was quite surprised at how-GOOD-the film was,now I have to go dig out the dvd and watch it again. LOL.
A total surprise, I had the lowest possible expectations.
Sadly, A-Team creator Stephen J. Cannell passed away in 2010 at the age of 69. A true genius if there ever was one!
RIP to a legend
I think it was his dying wish to get this movie produced.
Thank you for acknowledging this great masterpiece. The world really slept on this film and it's a shame because I hate reboots but this is a rare gem where they get it right.
I love both The Losers and the A-Team movie. It’s a bummer we didn’t sequels to either.
Came here to say these words in this order.
Agreed.
Agreed. I watched both in the theater. I thought it was a trend, but sadly, one and done for each.
The Losers was great! I was hoping it would inspire a 100 Bullets series.
This was such an underrated film. I grew up in the 80s so the these kind of shows where my jam and I loved the film.
I was sad to see the van get crushed so soon in the movie. It was like one of the main characters being killed off way too early
I think it was supposed to be reprised in later movies. This one was supposed to be an origin story.
The A-Team is VERY good. I think those who did not ever watch the TV show are the ones that crashed it. Having grown up on the TV show, I found the movie to be great. It is one of my favorites.
Never watched the show, but obvi know about it. I love this movie. I probably have rewatched it 5 times at least.
The C130 scene is the best, I rematch it regularly. "No... they're trying to fly the tank..."
You love that line, too? Fantastic!
Love that whole sequence. Face with the "it's a little stuffy" I'm gonna Crack a window!"
Or Murdocks "Recently!" When answering a question about falling
@@Bjamz1138 The only issue is BA trying to keep the ropes on himself, pulling them down as he says "I blame you Hannibal!"
@@Bjamz1138 That's my Diversion... they die on this version!
Ice Cube as BA is an inspired casting choice. The only other option would've been Terry Crews.
Quentin nailed it in my opinion.
Yes it is. Now I've been watching original A-Team marathons and i will say this. While the original cast can't be beat (in particular the chemistry between Baracus and Murdoch), the remake did improve by alot on the 80s era cheesy special effects and stunts.
And the casting was top notch. Everyone was spot on. While Liam Neeson as Hannibal, Bradley Cooper as Face and Sharlto Copley as Murdoch were outstanding, the big surprise here was Quinton Jackson filling Mr T's shoes and overalls as Baracus.
This is how you do a remake
Lets say it a reimagining versus a remake!
Good theory for why The A-Team didn’t do as well at the box office as it should have, but I have a more accurate answer: The Karate Kid remake. Check the box office opening weekend for that release. That Jaden Smith/Jackie Chan team up was a juggernaut that weekend, and it took the lion’s share of the receipts. In the long run, The A-Team was the better movie though.
I love the moment when the A-Team were flying the tank. It was loud and silly. The group worked well together. I could hear Bradley Cooper's Rocket Raccoon voice in that scene.
As silly as you think that scene was, look up [Reel Physics Ep 001 - "The A-Team - Tank Flying!"]
Totally underrated adaptation. The show itself was pretty corny, but still iconic. The movie did a great job updating the origin story and adapting them for a modern audience. I was bummed that it performed pretty poorly at the box-office upon release. It absolutely deserved a sequel, and possibly a complete movie franchise.
Im a mid 90s millennial who was actually familiar with the A team before the movie. I went through a classic tv phase in my teens.
I know. I would have loved to have seen a trilogy with this cast.
A Team movie was def underrated. Hopefully a sequel?
A sequel was planned, but, the film under performed at the box office, grossing $ 177 million world-wide against a $ 110 million dollar budget,so the plans were dropped.
An A-Team meets The Fall Guy movie crossover would have been awesome IMO
call it "The Underperformers"? I loved The Fall Guy too. It just seems that 80s nostalgia just isn't marketable right now, unless you're Tom Cruise.
Bradley Cooper was still in his “Hangover” phase
I agree with you completely. And the extended cut is that much better. The A-Team is a total banger. The Losers is equally great.
The A-Team is the blueprint for making maybe the perfect adaptation of an old TV show. Well this and Miami Vice. Taking the original and updating it without losing its charm and feel. These two films are the perfect adaptations.
Btw, the credits in that fake movie referenced all the original 4 from the series. Thomas Banacek was George Peppard's 70s insurance investigator. JJ Starbuck was Dirk Benedict in the OG Battlestar Galactica and Clubber Lang was Mr.T in Rocky 3.
still dont get why they never made a sequal, the movie is balls to wall fun
Well, the reason was simple: the first one didn’t even break even in theaters.
The bigger question is why that was the case when it had everything going for it.
This movie had so much potential.
Murdoch in the remake was hilarious
Absolutely loved this movie as a fan of the tv show. This is how you bring back an 80's IP, you take the material seriously, you do NOT turn it into a comedy!!
I grew up watching the show growing up and loved it. And I was skeptical of the movie until I watched it and it was so much better than I could have ever hoped. Everything you said is in the nose about this movie. And I really wanted a series of these.
I never understood why people hated the movie. It’s a lot of fun!
That whole ‘The Greater Escape’ sequence was genius
The tank falling into the lake with the married couple, one on shore, the other in a boat fishing...has to be an all time great bit. Stored it in my memory banks when I need to laugh.
it was a great scene, but the UA-cam video titled [Reel Physics Ep 001 - "The A-Team - Tank Flying!"] will make you look at that scene a little differently, in an awesome way
“You speak Swahili?”, “You don’t?” 😂😂
The flying that tank scene would not have worked in any other movie.
heh take a look at the UA-cam video titled [Reel Physics Ep 001 - "The A-Team - Tank Flying!"]
Thank you! I'm tired of feeling like the only one who appreciated this movie. I even did a rewatch earlier this year
Shout out to Sharlto Copey🇿🇦
You’re not alone! JoBlo is here for you 🤘
Love The A-Team and love this reboot of it. It's a damn shame they didn't get to make a follow up!
You all should do a video on the greatest theme songs from TV shows. Something that is missing and has been for the last 20+ years if not even longer. Those theme songs are what made the show, and the reason i'm writing this is because you mentioned Simon and Simon which is my favorite of them all. The sax riff in that is the best. the 80's and the saxophone.
Now THAT is a great idea. We just may have to work on something like that if y’all want to see it!
@@JoBloOriginals Hell yes. I mean growing up in the 80's so many memories flood back with all the theme songs to all the show i watched as a kid, my mom and her shows. I mean i never watched Dallas, but damn if i dont queue that up to just hear the theme song. Simon and Simon. The Fall Guy. I have the Dukes of Hazzard record with the theme song and The General Lee by Johnny Cash. Magnum. Miami Vice, Mr. Belvidere. The one that always gets me is Perfect Strangers. Reminds me so much of my mom and how we watched together when i grew up. Facts of Life, Alf, Just the 10 of Us. Growing Pains. A-Team. Knight Rider. Punky Brewster. Family Ties.
setting the VCR to record these shows. Making sure it was set to channel 3, and then the right channel on the VCR and then setting the timer and making sure the time was correct. And if you had storm come through, power went out, forget about it. you come home to that damn blinking 12:00 and you just fall to your knees in heartbreak. LOL God those were the days and wish the kids of today would be able to experience that.
So glad someone has talked about this movie in a positive light. Being someone who also watched this show when I was younger. I absolutely enjoyed this movie. And whenever it comes on I watch it everytime. It's amazing to me though, how companies miss the fact that other good or great movies came out at the same time. Did they not pay attention to that ahead of time or at least consider it wasn't their fault the got out sold. I Definitely wanted.. needed a sequel. The crews bond seemed immaculate! Ah well...
Truly a shame we didn't get a sequel. Especially if everyone stayed on. Cast writers and directors
I enjoyed the movie a lot more than the show. The original "The A-Team" had too much collateral damage... mainly the sets (talk about Stormtrooper aim). This film did what the first "Mission: Impossible" movie did by taking the TV show's known tropes and turning them inside out. Both movies found out that the real threat was within which I loved.
7:01 That scene while being over the top the physics of the parachute and the fact the tank is a amphibious version still blows my mind. A old youtube show called "Reel Physics" made a episode called "The A-Team - Tank Flying!" going over the calculations behind the possible scenario.
awesome, I've been trying to pass the vid around on a couple comments here, glad someone else knows about it! [Reel Physics Ep 001 - "The A-Team - Tank Flying!"]
There's still time to do another sequel to this movie.
Need to get it going before Liam gets too old though.
It would make a great Netflix movie.
Dude, Neeson is 72!
We never got a sequel 😢
I had a friend buy me a Lego Duplo A Team Van with all the characters. And it was my 51st birthday, and its proudly displayed in my rec room
Could not agree more!! Amazing movie, perfect cast and great director!! Should have had several sequels!
It was actually pretty solid. Just hate we never got a sequel
I always wanted that theme song to play every time I walk into a room.
Freakin' love this movie! Great action, awesome cast. It's fun and exciting!
Alpha. Mike. Foxtrot!
With the exception of the frantic action scenes of that era, I enjoyed this film, too. I think their mistake was that the film was PG-13. Cooper blew up because the hard R-rated Hangover film and they should've made this one into a hard R-rated action picture.
This movie came out right after I graduated high school and I remember seeing it 3 times in the theater that summer. This movie definitely deserved better!
Carnahan is one of my favourite action directors out there today.
I totally agree with you on your opinion! I love this movie!!!
I’ve seen a lot of remakes from past tv shows, and you’re right, they just don’t stick the landing! This movie is both fun, and entertaining! The cast is perfect, and the story is updated for current audiences! I had so hoped for a sequel to this film, and it’s a shame that it didn’t happen.
Thankfully this opened the door for Carnahan and Neeson to do The Grey, a legitimate masterpiece.
Fun fact: This film is directed by the same guy we gave us two of the best most underrated thrillers of all time, Narc and the Grey.
Two things I wish they'd done with this film. First, use the theme song throughout. Second, have Jon Hamm be Decker at the end.
Sharlto Copely is criminally underused in Hollywood. That man elevates every movie he is in. Hard-core Henry and open grave are fantastic
I loved this movie…
It was er’thang that was the show…period. Casting was AMAZIN!!!
I really like this movie. It's very unfortunate how underrated it is
Being a fan of the TV show, I enjoyed the movie a lot. I have no complaints.
I still praise this film to anyone that will listen. It was pure goofy cinema in all its glory. Jessica Biel’s delivery of “no, they’re trying to fly the tank” is one of my favorites. You can tell her character is not even shocked because she’s seen them pull off shit like that all the time.
Totally agree, as a fan of the show, they nailed it with the film. Loved the cameos too
Awesome video!
I waited twenty years for this movie and saw it 3 times in its opening week. It was everything I hoped for and more. I was absolutely heartbroken when the sequel got cancelled 💔
It's also a huge shame that the planned 2015 tv reboot never came to be either.
I still live in the hope that one day soon, we'll see another A-Team reboot.
I love it when a JoBlo Originals video comes together
This is one of the few films (especially reboot films) that deserve a sequel!
The A team was such a good movie my bro downloaded the entire OG series and we would watch episodes together when we had time good memories
You can watch it once, and forget that you just watched it 15 minutes later.😅
I get that the cast of the movie kinda doesn't talk about it anymore but that's a shame because I think the cast and their chemistry is the strongest thing about the movie. Everyone seems to be having so much fun and I thought each of the 4 core members was really well cast. It's just a fun action movie with memorable lines and set pieces that I wish did well enough to warrant a sequel
Great essay. Couldn't agree more.
back when it was cool to have an out going message when you missed a call, i had the beginning of the A-Team that you just played as my outgoing message. and at the end where he says if you can find them, i added you better leave a message.
Loved seeing this in the theater, and so sad there were no sequels! Maybe one of the best remakes ever!
Yes! This movie was great. It had the spirit imho but with a modern sensibility.
I always recommend watching The Losers. It's the better version of the A-Team.
Evans in his best role. 😁
@@Ogre6972 That's right bitches, I got a crossbow.
How he managed to top Dwight Schultz I don’t know. But he absolutely nailed it.
YESSSS! That's what I've been saying! It has the same silly physics defying action of the Fast & Furious movies, but with a talented cast who work well together and have great chemistry!
PLEASE DO A LOSERS VIDEO! I loved the comic book series and the film was pretty solid - Jeffrey Dean Morgan deserves some love!
I second this emotion! 👍👍
Rampage losing his fight like that weekend certainly did not help the release.
john hamm should have been decker, but yes, this film is underrated and should still have a trilogy.
Totally agree. It's a well-made movie with a great cast that captured the fun and spirit of the tv show. Should have been a franchise
Damn Straight! One of the few examples of remakes being great. It didn't deserve the criticism.
You have a nuanced appreciation due to nostalgia. It is particular to your youth. Others may have had the same for other elements of pop culture. Far to particular to you personally to say it deserved a wider audience.
Starsky and Hutch was fun as hell.
Jessica you did an amazing job watched beginning to end loved every bit. Well done!!!
Deserves a sequel
I went to see this in theaters and had a blast. Like you said the cast really meshed well together, the action was fun even though some of it is a little far-fetched. I wanted a sequel for this movie immediately after, but I guess we'll just have to settle with this one-and-done
I had a blast with this one... loved it very much. Great cast, great script awesome action in the limit of the insane "FF" kinda thing with the tank used as a plane and the final plan... really a shame it didn't had the love it deserved.
Something you may not know that I find completely awesome... 6:56 Apparently the Tank Flying scene is actually possible according to this video on UA-cam [Reel Physics Ep 001 - "The A-Team - Tank Flying!"] look it up, it's a really good analytical video of the scene!
The tank was too much.
This is a stupid, far fetched movie that I seem to love watching it every time it comes on.
I loved the original show and how it portrayed Vietnam Vets in a positive light and highlighted their mistreatment upon return. I may have read that in to it at the time, but growing up in that era, it came through intended or not. The movie was good action but the A-team only fit the 80's.
The A-Team was far better than the critics thought. Liam Neeson & Bradley Cooper were perfect as Hannibal & Face. Its too bad the film never used Amy Allen & Lt. Gen. Hunt Stockwell from the TV series.
Colonel John Hannibal Smith, B. A. Baracus, Amy Allen & Gen. Stockwell were the best characters from the show.
Marvel Comics did a three-issue The A-Team miniseries back in 1984. A missed opportunity was to have them crosspaths with G. I. Joe.
THis movie was a great popcorn film and deserved sequels .
The people whining about the tank seem to for get the total ridiculous standards in the show. Every week they would build machine guns out of pencils and rubber band and a tank out of a tractor and a piece of wood. .
THE reason this movie didn't do well is because they didn't use the theme song correctly.
It's not a little easteregg reference.
It's the fu#&ing theme song!
I definitely wanted more of these movies. The characters were awesome!
I last saw this film over a decade ago and remember virtually nothing about it. The audience already knew who and what the A-Team were so why bother with the overlong backstory? The action sequences were executed well enough but it lacks narrative drive. For A-Team completists only, I would suggest.
I loved this movie from the first time I saw it. I'm now 50, so 9-14 or so during the original series run, so probably the perfect demographic.
I have this on Blu-ray and I’m glad I got it. It’s a fun action movie and those are hard to find now.
It breaks my heart that we only got one outing with Nelson and co, but pure dreck like Bay's Transformers have had several.
Before this came out i really hoped we would get a George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Jim Carrey version of this movie..... I didn't have an actor choice for B.A.
I love this movie. It's one of the few movies I can watch over and over again without getting tired of it. The TV show was great too!
Starsky and Hutch Is Fantastic! Definitely an underrated movie.
A-Team and The Losers coming out around the same time; this plan didn't come together, unfortunately.
I love this movie. Easy to watch, fun, and captures the spirit of the T-Show brilliantly. Didn't get a fair shake of the stick. Should have been the next Mission: Impossible or Fast and Furious franchise.
