I am listening this channel since a while along with Isaac Arthur's as well. I have to say, i found these "shows" more professional than NatGeo, Discovery etc... those are seems to be like mainstream, cheap after these "genre" . The rightwing outright denies climate change, while the leftwing wants to use it to enact new taxes without offering any real solutions. The comments section, thankfully, does not seem to have exploded into this sort of argument. Saying "there is no escaping politics" is an argument people made who wished to inject politics into video games, and who wish to push their dogma into science. That's like saying evolution is political. Evolution and climate change simply are. Does the planet Mars vote Republican or Democrat? How about the theory of gravity? Is gravity conservative, liberal or is gravity more of a libertarian concept?

I assume that coal and oil are very rare in the universe. Even if there is another civilization, I highly doubt the greenhouse effect would be in play. Likely a phenomenon unique to Earth.
I like that notion: if we humans colonize another planet, it's our biosphere, us being an extension of it, that is achieving the colonization. It's similar to the anthropic concept of the universe, in that we ourselves are just the universe observing itself, albeit with only limited knowledge of ourselves, frustratingly!
I wonder how many populated worlds would have fossil fuel resources in the first place. We got ours through a sort of happenstance. Without fossil fuels we would be in no danger of CO2 induced climate change. (We might still be living in grass huts, idk, but I don't think that's necessarily true.)
That depends on how you define fossil fuels. We now can create "fossil fuel" from grass products through an artificial process. It stands to reason any advanced civilization should e capable of creating their own source the same as we do with ethanol and methanol.
That's a really uncomfortable thought. Seeing the doom of your own species approaching, while not being to do anything about it... because your own species.

I really enjoyed that talk. I also just watched a TED talk which had someone saying he didn't think there was any other intelligent life out there, and I felt that his definitions were a bit narrow, though it left me feeling sad. Your talk really uplifted me after that.
It annoys me a little bit that there’s this attitude about climate change, habitat destruction and the effects we’re having on the natural world being purely an issue of mankind’s survival. I am also fascinated by space and the possibility of colonising other planets etc but as far as we know, life on earth is the only life in the universe and it could actually be the case, so we MUST ensure that we get through our technological advances while leaving as much of the natural world in tact as possible. Life is the wonder of the universe and that doesn’t just mean us. How tragic would it be to advance to space in search of life, destroying earth life in the process, only to find that was it and it was unique?
I know it's only 6 thumbs down but who is going out of their way to find this channel then giving it a thumbs down? Seems like if you know about this channel you are pretty into this kind of talk. You mention in this video that when you started astronomy in 1987, we were not even sure about the existence of exoplanets. So I'd like to suggest a video about the history of exobiology or the discovery of exoplanets and how our knowledge evolved in the past decades. Cheers for your great content !
Mars does actually have more atmospheric hydrocarbons than it should! We aren't sure if it is from geologic processes or potentially microbial life under the surface (yet).

But that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of civilizations out there or that they've all killed themselves off. They simply are more advanced than us and are clever at not being detected. I appreciate your approach. It's wise to be cautious, objective and reasonable when dealing with different intelligence from beyond the world. It's really cool that you think global warming is like what I said, before. Global warming must become the catalyst that creates a type 1 civilization! It' can't be that impossible to actually remove the excess CO2, as we mature...
Ideally they'd have the guests record their own audio, and send the file to John to edit; that could deal with a lot of the quality issue (I'm guessing John interviews over skype or the like). But that does involve a non-trivial amount of setup for the guest, which may make it a non-starter for some :-(
I still think there is a tipping point between resources left, technology finding solutions and polluting our ecosystem. Don't know if we will make it....

At some point we will have to stop calling it the Fermi Paradox: there are so many possible explanations, my favored one being the likely short duration of the average detectable technological stage, for whatever reason, combined with the timing issues you mention. I am also impressed that we are on the good side of the incredible prokaryotic/ eukaryotic jump. So incredible that if it happened once on its own, it seems that the only way it could happen somewhere else is by spreading from the original source... A minor point: absence of proof of life will never be proof of absence of life. It would be like staring at a large bunch of trees in the Amazon forest , from a distance, and calling it the Chameleon Paradox just because we can't see them! We know there has to be one, but there is no direct evidence!
If you have some far-red 730nm LEDs, and shine them on plant leaves, you can see with your own eyes how brightly the leaves reflect it, as well as some other effects, such as reading black sharpie on what is normally black fabric.

Ideally they'd have the guests record their own audio, and send the file to John to edit; that could deal with a lot of the quality issue (I'm guessing John interviews over skype or the like). But that does involve a non-trivial amount of setup for the guest, which may make it a non-starter for some :-(
Does the audio cut off partway through the introduction for anyone else? Is it one of those damned copyright spam claims causing the issue?
How could it not be, is still one of the only filters we haven't passed yet.
I still think there is a tipping point between resources left, technology finding solutions and polluting our ecosystem. Don't know if we will make it....

Thanks for that deep discussion! Excellent choice of guest and topics. I stayed interested until the end. At some point we will have to stop calling it the Fermi Paradox: there are so many possible explanations, my favored one being the likely short duration of the average detectable technological stage, for whatever reason, combined with the timing issues you mention. I am also impressed that we are on the good side of the incredible prokaryotic/ eukaryotic jump. So incredible that if it happened once on its own, it seems that the only way it could happen somewhere else is by spreading from the original source...
A minor point: absence of proof of life will never be proof of absence of life. It would be like staring at a large bunch of trees in the Amazon forest , from a distance, and calling it the Chameleon Paradox just because we can't see them! We know there has to be one, but there is no direct evidence!

If you have some far-red 730nm LEDs, and shine them on plant leaves, you can see with your own eyes how brightly the leaves reflect it, as well as some other effects, such as reading black sharpie on what is normally black fabric.

Hahaha... same here. i fell a sleep many time during listening an episode. Not because its boring, but sometimes this is the last thing i do on my day (ok night or even dusk) extremely calm, extremely introvert moment. Almost like a meditation.
