Superb introduction, audio quality, questions and of course answers. On top of that, the quiet music in the background eliminates any remaining risk of it being too dry/boring and it's at just the right volume to not be intrusive or distracting - it's just barely there. Enjoying this very much. Thank you.

given that certain areas of research are funded by proclivities and interests, reflective of political persuasions as government aggregates large pools of capital for disbursement ... given there are interests to bias agendas to enact new mechanisms of social controls ... given people form groups around common sensibilities and exclusions result from heightened sensitivities among cherished beliefs ... given an intolerance of differing views, inherent in humanity's thinking ... given biases, beliefs and the groups that form around them ...
there is no escaping politics, as certain people demand it be made overt
the mere fact that this video is about "climate change" makes this video political.

Given that you write like someone with asperger's, I'll explain what I meant....
Both sides of the political spectrum have brought their dogma to climate change. The rightwing outright denies climate change, while the leftwing wants to use it to enact new taxes without offering any real solutions. The comments section, thankfully, does not seem to have exploded into this sort of argument.
Saying "there is no escaping politics" is an argument people made who wished to inject politics into video games, and who wish to push their dogma into science. That's like saying evolution is political. Evolution and climate change simply are. Does the planet Mars vote Republican or Democrat? How about the theory of gravity? Is gravity conservative, liberal or is gravity more of a libertarian concept?

@@adumbedgyname7158 The American right often uses the "politics" label to shut down any conversation about climate change, whether it is about the causes (science) or the solutions (often involves political choices). They try to use Thanksgiving Dinner table manners rules to silence discussion. You don't see that very much with the left. That is a telltale sign of who has the facts on their side.
Engaging in both-sideserism isn't helpful to anyone but the bad actor. It does not inform the undecided. It punishes the blameless for the sake of evening out the blame. It encourages further bad behavior because the bully gets to get the "referee" to dole out punishment to the innocent. Since it is Sunday, in American football terms, "Offsides! 5 yard penalty to both sides cause I'm sure I didn't catch something that the other side did."
Demonizing individuals or claiming that the other side is demonizing a person who hasn't been mentioned (looking at you Zk AY) is just a political tactic. It isn't politics, per se. If you are going to mention a person such as Al Gore or the Brothers Koch, you should be able to show that it is true, and relevant. Using a person as a bludgeon or a shield isn't addressing the issue.

The whole left vs right thing reaches far beyond America's borders. If you think otherwise, you are being willfully ignorant. Your mileage may vary, but I have seen the rightwing at least acknowledge climate change's existence.
Also, the "facts" being on the leftwing's side? Their political spectrum thinks that there are over 72 human genders and counting.... I've at least gotten the rightwing to seriously acknowledge climate change.

I wonder how many populated worlds would have fossil fuel resources in the first place. We got ours through a sort of happenstance.
Without fossil fuels we would be in no danger of CO2 induced climate change. (We might still be living in grass huts, idk, but I don't think that's necessarily true.)

    • @jeebtta4097
      @jeebtta4097 4 роки тому

That depends on how you define fossil fuels. We now can create "fossil fuel" from grass products through an artificial process. It stands to reason any advanced civilization should e capable of creating their own source the same as we do with ethanol and methanol.

It annoys me a little bit that there’s this attitude about climate change, habitat destruction and the effects we’re having on the natural world being purely an issue of mankind’s survival. I am also fascinated by space and the possibility of colonising other planets etc but as far as we know, life on earth is the only life in the universe and it could actually be the case, so we MUST ensure that we get through our technological advances while leaving as much of the natural world in tact as possible. Life is the wonder of the universe and that doesn’t just mean us. How tragic would it be to advance to space in search of life, destroying earth life in the process, only to find that was it and it was unique?

But that doesn't mean there aren't plenty of civilizations out there or that they've all killed themselves off. They simply are more advanced than us and are clever at not being detected. The arrival of intervening forces from beyond our world at a time of unprecedented change represents the greatest event in human history and the greatest challenge to humanity’s survival and freedom."
To know if it is true or not, you have to read it yourself. To me, I went through the first awareness of alien presence in our world, then assuming there are good ones, and bad ones, till I found Allies of Humanity 10 years ago. Thanks for that deep discussion! Excellent choice of guest and topics. I stayed interested until the end. At some point we will have to stop calling it the Fermi Paradox: there are so many possible explanations, my favored one being the likely short duration of the average detectable technological stage, for whatever reason, combined with the timing issues you mention. I am also impressed that we are on the good side of the incredible prokaryotic/ eukaryotic jump. So incredible that if it happened once on its own, it seems that the only way it could happen somewhere else is by spreading from the original source...
A minor point: absence of proof of life will never be proof of absence of life. It would be like staring at a large bunch of trees in the Amazon forest , from a distance, and calling it the Chameleon Paradox just because we can't see them! We know there has to be one, but there is no direct evidence!

If you have some far-red 730nm LEDs, and shine them on plant leaves, you can see with your own eyes how brightly the leaves reflect it, as well as some other effects, such as reading black sharpie on what is normally black fabric.

Hahaha... same here. i fell a sleep many time during listening an episode. Not because its boring, but sometimes this is the last thing i do on my day (ok night or even dusk) extremely calm, extremely introvert moment. Almost like a meditation.

Welcome to Event Horizon, with John Michael Godier. I always enjoy these, and it really serves as a daily reminder of the cumulative effects of everyone's actions, and the butterfly effect.
