Husband is 18 months from retiring. We still live in our first/starter home that's paid for, our cars are 19, 16, and 13 years old-all paid cash for them and are well maintained, we don't care about labels or designer stuff, I shop at thrift stores and Aldi for groceries. We help our kids when we can, and we tip well when eating out. It's a simple, small town life for us, and I guarantee most people have no idea our net worth is over 7 figures with 0 debt. 😊
50 And retired with two kids and wife pretty much was stay at home after children. We lived in what was considered a starter home, drove old cars, took very basic vacations etc...etc....At my peak I made $140K per year and walked away from it because I could and it was a nice feeling. Now I hand out with my wife, the dog, and the kids who are ready for college and that is fully taken care of. But I thank all those who live beyond their means to give me 10%+ returns in the stock market for 30 years!!!!!!

Funnily enough, the closer we get to paying the mortgage off, the happier I am in our little home.

I am quite comfortable but a few times a month, work takes me to some shady parts of the city. ZERO interest in getting a luxury car or even a new mid-priced car. I feel a lot better driving the 11-year old Civic with fading black paint. It runs very well and people just assume I don't have anything worth stealing inside.

What’s considered wealthy? It’s all relative. Most of these stealth wealthy people don’t think they are wealthy. I think that’s why they aren’t showing off because they are still afraid of running out of money. This same concept is why they have money- they saved and were smart about spending. They might have a few million and statistically that is pretty well compared to most Americans but they are looking at people like the Kardashians and Pelosi and feel like they aren’t rich. I’ve learned over the years you can’t really get a good idea how much money someone has by looking at their homes, cars, clothes, or vacations.

I just learned I inherited $3,000,000.00 from my Father (Trust). On top of this inheritance, my net worth is now well into 8 figures. I still drive a 2011 white colored Prius even though I could easily buy (in cash) 8 Lamborghinis and still have lots money left. BTW, my kid inherited 1.5 million dollars (USD) from his Grandfather. The only hint we might have some money is we fly “Business Class” when fly to Asia or Europe (we fly “economy” if the flight is 5 hours or less).

My mechanic just effed up my 2002 Buick Lesabre. Ended up with a blown head gasket. Bought it for $4800 and drove it nearly maintenance free for 5 years. It was the ultimate SUV as it was huge. Oh well.......The challenge is the next vehicle and I love it. Like a haggler at the market.
I don’t understand why they don’t have this already. It isn’t that difficult. They could call it ‘every not-dollar’ and it would just cover everyone (except other dollars, I guess). I think it’s because they’re a very pro American company. I’m not saying that’s bad at all, just that my perception is they’re only interested in being successful in the States. I believe in staying "under the radar". I graduated from college with $800.00 in the bank and went into the real estate business. The meaning behind "Travel light and keep it simple" is missed here. When you are stealth-wealthy you travel often enough to know what you need and are aware of the hassle of bringing too much stuff. You also have the confidence that all you absolutely need to bring is your passport, credit card, and prescription medicines. Everything else you pack is to avoid having to shop. For us, even if we drive there in our ten-year old Predawn Gray Sienna, we usually just have a carry-on sized piece for each person.

The overarching theme of stealth wealth is the people who have that live well below their means. My wife and I live in a working class neighborhood in a 1930s house. Our newest car is a 2013. We have only bought one new car in our lives. We have zero mortgage payment and zero car payments and no debt. We have investment accounts worth millions and no, none of it was inherited. Our kids go to an elite private school. People ask how can we possibly afford it. We afford it because we believe in investing, not spending. Education is an investment.

I'm going to give you a different side of the stealth wealth. My daughter is a showy person but doesn't have a lot of money. She bought a set of Kate Spade bags for 70% off but doesn't tell anyone they were 70% off; she buys people's meals that she knows doesn't have any money when we go out with our social groups knowing she will be eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches till the next payday. Basically she lets people think that she has more money than she does but she never complains about it that's just the type of person she is.
Sounds like an awful way to live. Buy other people meals? Then turn around and neglect your own health with peanut butter and jelly? Is your daughter trying go virtue signal and take the moral high ground or what?
One of my friends has stealth wealth. His work equipment, personal vehicle, and house all need to be condemned and demolished. He never buys anything new and low balls every offer on something he wants. I guess some people think that the only reason to have wealth is so you can flaunt all your stuff. My reason for wealth would be to not live in a slum house or drive something that leaves you stranded in heavy traffic.

I wish I had been more serious and thought long term when I was younger. I had a really good job, strong IRA, halfway paid off house, by the time I was 33. All it took was getting laid off in 2008, moving to China to take a teaching job, getting divorced, and moving back to the US with nothing. I trusted my ex for 10 years. She talked me into cashing in the 401k to get the kids in a good school over there and her buying a car ($50K+). I became an alcoholic and wasted 10 years after that. Now, I’m determined to invest and build it back 10X. All I do is invest everything, read and research.

Same old advice. Check what funds you are invested in. Make sure it's stocks & shares. Not bonds & cash. There was a large increase in the markets at the start of this year. Mine went up just over 10% in a few months.

11 years old Civic has a lot of life left. I just handed down my 2004 Civic with 228,000 miles to my high schooler😊. Used it since June 2010.

Wife and l have stealth wealth, and l think it’s because it took us 30 years to get here and we’re set in our ways. If it comes fast and easy, you may show it off more, and probably lose it.

I believe in staying "under the radar". I graduated from college with $800.00 in the bank and went into the real estate business. Today I enjoy a net worth in the 8 figures and income near 7 figures per year with no debt. I live in one of my duplex rental units that I built, drive a 10 year old Truck, and a 20 year old Mercedes. I do dress very nicely, but I buy alot of clothes online for less money. It is such a joy to live a life where you are financially independent. I'm not Bill Gates.....but I'm cooler than Bill Gates...:)

The meaning behind "Travel light and keep it simple" is missed here. When you are stealth-wealthy you travel often enough to know what you need and are aware of the hassle of bringing too much stuff. You also have the confidence that all you absolutely need to bring is your passport, credit card, and prescription medicines. Everything else you pack is to avoid having to shop. For us, even if we drive there in our ten-year old Predawn Gray Sienna, we usually just have a carry-on sized piece for each person.
Some people think to be wealthy means you can finally throw money around. Even though a thousand bucks is a small percentage of your income, a thousand is still a thousand. No, not buying Swifty tickets for a spoiled teen.

The overarching theme of stealth wealth is the people who have that live well below their means. My wife and I live in a working class neighborhood in a 1930s house. Our newest car is a 2013. We have only bought one new car in our lives. We have zero mortgage payment and zero car payments and no debt. We have investment accounts worth millions and no, none of it was inherited. Our kids go to an elite private school. People ask how can we possibly afford it. We afford it because we believe in investing, not spending. Education is an investment.

I'm going to give you a different side of the stealth wealth. My daughter is a showy person but doesn't have a lot of money. She bought a set of Kate Spade bags for 70% off but doesn't tell anyone they were 70% off; she buys people's meals that she knows doesn't have any money when we go out with our social groups knowing she will be eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches till the next payday. Basically she lets people think that she has more money than she does but she never complains about it that's just the type of person she is.

One of my friends has stealth wealth. His work equipment, personal vehicle, and house all need to be condemned and demolished. He never buys anything new and low balls every offer on something he wants. I guess some people think that the only reason to have wealth is so you can flaunt all your stuff. My reason for wealth would be to not live in a slum house or drive something that leaves you stranded in heavy traffic.

My biggest fear was that I wouldn't be able to help my children and I was always affraid of mortgage even though modest. I started Ramsey beginning of 2022 and I can't get over the progress. I wish I had been more serious and thought long term when I was younger. I had a really good job, strong IRA, halfway paid off house, by the time I was 33. All it took was getting laid off in 2008, moving to China to take a teaching job, getting divorced, and moving back to the US with nothing. I trusted my ex for 10 years. She talked me into cashing in the 401k to get the kids in a good school over there and her buying a car ($50K+). I became an alcoholic and wasted 10 years after that. Now, I’m determined to invest and build it back 10X. All I do is invest everything, read and research.

Same old advice. Check what funds you are invested in. Make sure it's stocks & shares. Not bonds & cash. There was a large increase in the markets at the start of this year. Mine went up just over 10% in a few months.
