To be honest I'm not sure....I've been to Greg Judy's place...and I've seen what he has going. Great operation...but I'm honestly not sure at all. We won't be breeding until July of next year
@@StoneyRidgeFarmer we always bred our angus heifers/cows to a Hereford bull. Put a lil marbling in the meat.

Always feels good to get a job done. Doesn't matter what it is,just stepping back and being able to say well that's done just makes me smile.
That’s a simple and effective water system. That pond is sure paying off. Hose ramps are money well spent. Back in my firefighting days I occasionally saw those deployed at fire scenes. That sure beats driving over your pipes or hoses.
Josh, If you throw a chuck of copper pipe in your troughs it will help control the alge which will start growing as soon as the weather gets warmer.. We found soom ~3" copper pipe cutoffs at a local metal scrapper and cut them to ~2' long. Cleaned them well
Randomly got this notification 5 days later but I do like those float valves, the plastic one the best. Cleans up better after algae starts growing inside.
I use a float valve just like this! They work so well! They are designed perfectly!

Great Job/video again Josh! We put a large round water tank between our corral and a small pen we used to isolate animals or to gather them to work. We hung one of those water's from the fence over the middle of the tank. Had a freeze proof faucet next to the tank and a short piece of hose from it to the float valve. We never had any problems with our water system. Of course we kind of thought like you, "Work smarter, not harder!"

Your new fence system is pretty awesome! Helping Dad put up fence using wood fence post was so labor intensive, especially digging the hole with the 3 point tractor mounted post hole digger was a nightmare! Thanks Josh for a great video.

Josh, I use RV water pressure reducers when i have a lot of elevation induced water pressure so the valves dont have to work so hard to shut off. They last much longer and dont leak, which wastes water and makes mud. (as you mentioned)
As I recall the drop from the pond to the cows is around 10 feet. SO 10x.433= 4.33psi.

We use the same style Plastic floats albeit a different brand in Australia, they have been going 20+ years now and haven't even replaced a single rubber valve seal. We run a 90 degree off the float which i am sure you will do also once you bury them pipes.

That is a really cool system! Just to save you some aggravation for next time, if you forget to put a hose clamp on, you don't need to remove the pipe connection- just unscrew the hose clamp and open it up. Then, fit around the pipe and re-connect. Ask me how I learned this LOL

Hi Josh. I use gravity feed on my farm for my cows. One thing I suggest for your water for the next incarnation, have a small but tall tank on the outside with the float in, and a pipe across to the tank in with the cows. We have alot of issues with the cows ( and horses ) playing with the floats and breaking them. cheers.

Josh if you add a piece of wood between the tank & the thumbscrews the valve will be held tight against the wall of the tank so the thumbscrews will not slide on the metal tank and loosen up. A piece of 1x4x6"long will work just fine, let me know how you like it. Chas

Great job! You should look into the Jobe mega flow valve... they do a great job and last forever. It’s the same valve Greg Judy recommends. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for showing us your passive water system. May I suggest when you’re putting together cold pipe that you take a little propane torch and just heat the end up or use a little bit of soapy water to make it easier. Take care my friend.

Fyi you can fully open hose clamps and reclose them to get them over the lines so you dont have to tear apart all the fittings. Just trying to help you out.

As Kids brother and I were in 4H we had registered Angus one year neighbor had 50 Herford heifers for replacements and had a couple Hertford bulls. Brothers Young bulls were in the next pasture. The neighbor lost a couple heifers that had Herford calves but none on the 14 crosses he ended up with. When we helped haul to feedlot after weaning the cross averaged 100 lb. More. The funny part was the brother in law of neighbor was on school board and was at the schoolboard Christmas party at our house as was superintendent/high school principal. The brother-in-law made a deal to buy enough bulls that check he wrote was more than the salary of superintendents. brother wasn't much of a student but the superintendent made sure he graduated as he didn't want a student that much more than he did.

Also, back when I was living on a farm instead of commuting to my current farm I always had a good dog.Miss that. Won't have a large dog in town: not fair to the dog and have no use for an ankle biter. Ol' Beaux my black lab/rottie mix was the best dog I ever had. Miss him to this day.
They’ll do fine with the water system! As for naysayers I’ve had my pipe along fence line for 8 years above ground in the South Texas heat and the cows gulp it! Most of these haunjaks running their mouths still let their cows drink stock pond water the cows wade in and shit in. Another great video Big Country!👍🏻
Amen! Thanks for re-assuring folks that the cows faces won't melt off when we introduce 2 gallons of warm water to a 100 gallon stock tank bhahahha...common sense to me...but somehow it sure gets others in a tizzy lol

Great helpful videos. How will you keep them from freezing up in the winter. I’m in Northwest Alabama, probably a little warmer than you, but still have bone chilling temps in January and February.

Josh ive been following since the willys was started but ive learned so much more. I recently watched the chick pen video. Was wondering if you have any experience with goat pens. My daughter is raising one for 4H and i cant keep the dang thing penned up

Josh, I thing the ditch digger attachment for the Ventrac would be great to bury those water lines. Unless it would be more cost effective over the long run to just rent a ditch digger. What do you think, bud.

Have you thought about a cattle crossing at your gate? With a ditch under it to help with water drainage?
Tip on the zip ties. At work we had a cut of gun. We cut them first with diagonal cutters and finished them off with toe nail cutters.

Looks like a good set up. Only thing I might do different would be using a flex line from the "T" down to the valve just in case the cows would try to move the water troughs or as the ground settles from rain and the weight of a full trough. Might save your fence???
the poly pipe is pretty flexible....time will tell though for sure!

We have less water here in the southwest so we use more groundwater from deeper some several thousand feet down so we rely on windmills a lot

My animals don't care for hot water in summer ,I would consider keeping the black pipe out of sun and maybe cover with earth. I drain every few days to keep cool and fresh

Maybe that style is new in your area, but it is standard in all the farm supply stores around here.
I have used a metal one for 5 years or so on a deer water trough.
Make sure it's level, so the float works properly.
That clear stopper can get deformed and not seal or get some debris in the hole on the valve and not seal.
Polypipe is a lot cheaper in bulk if you got a 1500 foot roll, that would only be $17 per 100 foot. And you don't have connectors/fittings to worry about. I bought my microhydro penstock from Menards and they have 3/4 in 1500 foot rolls for $245

I put a line in like you are doing about six years ago and some animal keep coming and chewing the line and I would have to repair it every other day so the cows would have water. I would put it under ground for that reason and to keep water cool.
Toilet tank float control works great also
Black hose exposed to sun should make some hot water; that's not going to be good. Better to run along the base of the fence and let the grass cover it.
I agree....and the pipes will be burried soon....not all the pipe is up on the fence..and this area is shaded most of the day..plus mixing 2 gallons of 130 degree water with 80 gallons of 70 degree water won't make much difference in the grand scheme of things
Hey Josh, just know that your valves are not UV resistant. The valve handles will eventually give out. You might think of covering them to mitigate the eventual problem.
Most likely we'll go to a brass valve after this season..this is temporary for now

Someone mentioned using an toilet float valve. This is the one I used for filling A/C cooling towers.
Available through Graingers 46A986 . The drawback is the float is exposed to the cows. How much would it be worth to you for a solar powered fill system be worth. Just one copper wire in the tank and one attached to the tank. You need two cooper wires in the tank if you are using plastic tanks. I know, dah.
Yep toilet valve would be destroyed by the cows...unless covered. We'll try all sorts of stuff before settling on what works best...and I'll share that with ya!
You may find over time a brass quarter turn ball valve will be a better choice. I had a plastic valve and when I needed to use it it failed dismally.
Josh just noticed your fence posts do not have caps. If they are capped off, water will not accumulate in them and rust them off at the bottom.

Nice when your water is up hill from your water feeder. What about when your water is down the hill from your field? We can’t legally create a pond, dam or modify waterways up here in Washington state.
Ram pump? Solar Pump? Wind driven pump? In the name of agriculture you can do alot my brotha...get a farm number and talk with NRCS....figure out a way.....folks build "catch ponds" all the time? When people say no..get creative

Much cheaper, go to the hardware store of choice, plumbing section and purchase a toilet tank Ballcock Valve. I have this feeding four tanks and works fine. Gravity feed is great.

It appears your float screws straddle over the fence wire. Any movement of the tank may damage your float that way. (Last tank in video.)
