I always liked and respected Greg Norman. The class he showed after a six stroke lead slipped away and he missed out getting a green jacket was amazing! I had the pleasure of meeting him and had a great conversation with him. What a nice gentleman! A great deal of athletes could learn how to act and show good sportsmanship from him.
The British press called Faldo, Nick Foldo before he broke through and won the Open. That is where that comment to Norman came from in their embrace on the 18th. Faldo knew how much hurt Norman was in for, regardless of how well he handled that collapse on the surface. The comment was full of care for Greg and says a lot about who Faldo really is.
Despite the fact it has been almost 30 years, I can still remember the 1996 Masters clearly because I wanted " The Shark" Greg Norman to win !! He had that big lead and then all hell broke loose. Norman was an amazing golfer!!
@@greatriffisherefaldo was one golfer feared by Greg...he just couldn't beat him when head to head...nick was so tough mentally...he said he shook Greg's hand before they teed off at st Andrews in 1990...and Greg couldn't look at him in the eye and nick thought I've gotcha!!!
My favourite golfer of all time ,I was rooting for Greg at the masters I had all the shark gear to play in just wish I could have played like him ..... A great great man
At the presser after the final round Norman remarked "Well at the end of the day I still have $40 million" That pretty much sums up the difference between this guy and Nicklaus or Woods. He was all about the money and not the game.
And he hasn't changed, he wants to "grow the game" by paying already filthy rich golfers tens/hundreds of millions of $$$ to play 54 hole team golf...like they play at a club outings.
Lots of good comments. I fell in love with golf back in '81 in the UK. Peter Alliss quickly became one of my heroes. The BBC came up with an idea for a 2 top men v 2 top women show over a few holes around Woburn GC, filmed and shown in the middle of winter. Alliss introduced Severiano Ballesteros and Greg Norman as "the two most exciting golfers in the world today". He was right. Seve obviously well established with majors under his belt already but Norman yet to make his mark. Norman's swashbuckling style was a massive hit both in the uk and the US for the next few years and with Seve took golf popularity to a new level. If you weren't around in the early '80's you wouldn't appreciate the type of game they wowed the spectators with. I think Nicklaus was similar but on reflection was just too slow and ponderous to attract the new generation. Norman dominated the world game for a while except for the majors. Was he just unlucky? I think he was to a degree. I would argue that the meltdown at Augusta in '96 was because of many close disappointments since as far back as 1981. He was already regarded as one of only two players in the whole world who could actually take on the yanks in the pressure cooker environment of the PGA tour! We had Sandy Lyle, such a great striker of the ball, super long etc but never matched them until years later. Same with Faldo. Norman literally had a golf superpower with the old persimmon driver. Longer and straighter than anyone else. Finished with the arrival of the new metal head. Now that WAS unlucky. Unfortunately it does appear he is a narcissist and his conduct over the last years has been horrendous. Shame.
never go in to the final round leading due to you attacking the course for 3 days then go into defencive play to hold the lead. WRONG on all levels. He shouldve never lifted off the throttle. Love you Greg.
No, incapable. He gagged a few other majors. Faldo said in an interview show he thought a 5 under round on Sunday would get it done....Norman started Sunday up by six. Which means Faldo knew Norman would choke.
What many people don’t remember is on the 72nd hole of the 1987 Masters, his final putt somehow missed going into the hole, and he ended up in the playoff with Seve and Larry Mize. We all know what happened to him on the 2nd hole of the playoff (Augusta’s par four 11th).
Greg trying to convince the world it was injury why he blew the Masters. Now , if this had been Tiger or Jack, you'd maybe probably agree. It was one of those days. This was Greg Norman. A serial bottler. He won about shed loads of regular events and a combined total of two majors. He was mentally weak. He was the 20th century Dustin Johnson.
Sadly every time my golfing mate looks at him he says “Choke Norman!” As a Faldo fan I was glad he won in ‘96, but jeez that must have hurt Norman so bad. But I don’t think we should feel sorry for him. He’s made hundreds of millions of dollars hitting a little white ball around a closely mown field and his legacy will be the disaster that is LIV golf. For Norman it was always about the $$ My mate lost all respect for him in 1996 as a choker. I lost respect for him after LIV.
Loved the way Norman once made a shot off a tee as Seve was about to putt causing the crowd to erupt and Seve to miss the putt, typical Norman, now he's a servant to the gang that gave the US 9/11
As an Aussie I generally have great regard for our best sports people but for some reason I have never had a great regard for Greg. Yes, he was a fabulous golfer, but just not a fabulous person. He's a FIGJAM which here is Oz means F*#@ I'm Great, Just Ask Me. Too many of his contempories have similar opinions of him. Such a shame
A great golfer, one of the greatest ever. But his arrogance caught up with him and left him out in the cold. Admired for his play, disliked as a person.
Shame about Liv, I don't mind you nicking all the players but at least put it on TV... no shot gun, show golf for 6-8 hours so we get a feel of the course, involved in the drama, not just bang, bang, bang, putt, putt, putt, stupid green, blue, orange, colours, one more putt, £20m, over for 6 weeks.
Bullshit.. The biggest ones are those who don’t even get to those heights in the first place🙄 No doubt you’d never even get the ball off the tee in the first place, but call a Major champion, multiple tour winner and former world number 1 a choker 🤷🏻♂️

I followed him final round at Troon 1989 birdied first six holes and shot 64 in dry hot dusty windy tricky conditions. Best golf ive ever seen.
Saw Norman in his pomp at Sy Andrews in 1984. Nobody could crush the ball off the tee like he could. Unbelievable.

Everybody focuses on his failures. He was a great champion as well. Let’s not forget. He was a major winner multiple times.
What a year he had in 86….Lead every Major going into final round…..
No wonder he’s promoting a 54 hole tournament league now hey

yes + ill tell you what - TOTAL ARSEWIPE.
Watch his first interview with foreplay podcast, he actually blames all his collapses on the people that beat him.
At this time The Masters only telecast the back 9 (at least in Australia). We tuned in to see Greg with just a 2 shot lead… WTF????
Whose the guy interviewing? Cool voice.
Dan Patrick
Joe Rogan
He gagged, pure and simple. It happens.
These guys don't gag trust me !!
Give Faldo some credit he shot 67 in the final round of that Masters piling extra pressure on Norman to win 🤷🏻♂️

One those swings that gets you to the “Saturday Slam” but just can’t get you over the line…

Greg lost to Faldo .Period.He has sadly now become the cancer of golf with his LIV circus. His great legacy as a sportsman and human being is dead.

Sir Nick was cold. Terminated choksy Norman then gave him advice 😂
I was there on the sunday.the first hole was so tough, and that's where it all went wrong for Norman..
caddy, no doubt?
We need more sigma males 👍
Why in the world did he exchanged all the respect and admiration he had from the golf world, for that boloney LIV league ?...
LIV was his idea. He's been wanting a new league for ages.
Just like Nicklaus, Palmer and the rest, except Lee Trevino stabbed PGA in the back to start The PGA Tour.
