    Hey man love the video but I just wanted to let you know that inward bass is different than the inhale bass you're talking about. I used to do the inhale bass as a kid cause it was fun to go really low, but after I picked up beat boxing I realized that they're different. Inward bass, if I'm not mistaken, uses only your false folds. It feels kind of like snoring but deeper in the throat and without the nose. It's supposed to be the inverse of chest bass. Hope this helps

    Also inertia and vocodah do not use the same kind of technique as your “inward/ingressive phonation” technique that you “discovered”. Yours is more like a straight up inward version of subharmonic register, the fact that it’s like a mix of regular inward chest voice and inward vocal fry, which a lot of people mistook yours for initially is why I think this, I can do inward bass, vocodah/inertia’s variation, and inward vocal fry AND inward phonation. I can tell the difference between the four. Basically, without going into too much detail, your ingressive phonation is a type of technique which only uses the regular true vocal folds. Chest bass or fire breathing (despite you mistakenly saying that this is caused by OMLY the false vocal chords in your video on beatbox vocal bass techniques ) is caused by the EPIGLOTTIS, just the epiglottis, nothing else. I’ve seen a stroboscopy of a beatboxer’s larynx to Verify this; the doctor in the video even affirmed this himself. However, you can vocalize your chest bass, where you add your true vocal chords’ note to its oscillation too. I can do vocalized chest bass too, it’s the bass that Big Ben, colaps, and Wunknown use. The “classic” Inward bass that most people think of is simply the INWARD VERSION of CHEST BASS, not the same as ingressive phonation. Inward bass therefore uses only the epiglottis not the true vocal folds phonating inward. The thing most people still have yet to understand is that vocodah’s and inertia’s inward basses sound different than regular inward bass because theirs is VOCALIZED inward bass. If you add your inward vocals to inward bass (which is normally unvocalized in its standard form, like it’s outward variant, chest bass), you’ll get a much deeper, darker bass which is exactly the kind of inward bass inertia and vocodah use and we’re using in your examples here.the reason people get confused when we say “vocalized inward bass” is cuz they’re only thinking of the “high inward bass” when think of this. High inward bass is just adding your inward FALSETTO voice to your inward chest bass. Regular vocalized inward bass is adding your inward MODAL VOICE/CHEST VOICE on top of your inward chest bass. Basically, vocodah and inertia use vocalized inward bass as their standard inward bass that they use, which is essentially the inward version of vocalized chest bass, just as regular inward bass is the inward version of un-vocalized chest bass, or “firebreathing”, as the vocal world calls this technique. And on top of that, I’ve come to understand through interviews of vocodah explaining this and listening to helium’s tutorial on his own inward bass, d low’a inward bass is vocalized inward bass with a THIRD component thrown in as well, which is why it sounds much more water-y liquid-y and gravelly than other vocalized inward basses. I believe this extra Component is the inward oscillation of the uvula, from vocodah’s explanation in his interview with soclosetotoast (I’d be more than happy to share the link and time stamp if you wish). Helium’s on the other hand is a very special variation on its own. Basically, according to helium himself, I’ve come to learn that helium inward bass is essentially the vocalized inward bass I was mentioning earlier, but you must “cut off” all airflow as much as possible. I don’t believe it’s simply ingressive phonation since it sounds much “thicker” than yours and mine when I do it. I believe that there is still epiglottal oscillation in his, but the texture is drastically altered to a way more “drier” bass tone which can be held for FAR longer (in most videos of him using it, helium can hold his inward bass variant for like 30 SECONDS which is normally almost impossible for regular inward bass to held for that long) since it pulls in almost no air to the lungs, it’s only an inward pull which triggers the right components but does NOT let the air to the lungs like for regular inward bass and it’s other variants. I can do unvocalized inward bass, ingressive phonation, vocalized inward bass, high vocalized inward bass, and d low inward bass so I can verify most of what I’m saying through practice, but while I have not yet unlocked helium’s inward bass, I have a good friend who can and who has explained to me the mechanics and feeling of it, which I feel gives me a pretty good understanding of what it is (and the fact that I’ve watched helium’s tutorial in русский on it like 200 times lol if you ever wish to chat or exchange ideas/knowledge on beatbox vocal basses, this is a huge fascination, passion and interest of mine, both musically as a beatboxer and academically as a scholar, please feel free to let me know. I admire your knowledge and passion as well on this subject and I feel you can help us collectively as a community better understand our basses and techniques

    • @alkmibeats2133
      @alkmibeats2133 3 роки тому +5

      And in case anyone who cares wants to hear a subjective-ish quality comparison between these four types of techniques I’m referring to here, I would basically differentiate them like this:
      -David Larson’s “ingressive phonation” bass is smooth, sounds like the actual natural modal voice, just hitting impossible-seeming low octaves, basically the inward version of what subharmonic register (probably 2nd level) sounds like.
      -inward vocal fry (like what b art, so so, and Napom use), very pop-py, much more croak-y and less smooth than David’s ingressive phonation. Basically the inward version of vocal fry. Can be hollow-sounding or more “solid” depending on how you shape your mouth and/or whether or not you hollow out your throat when doing this bass. But usually very pop-py and crackley. Neither this nor ingressive phonation are as “bass pure” or as low or thick in quality as true inward bass variations
      -un-vocalized inward bass, (Markooz, tyladubya, mark martin use this), very air-y, sounds like the inward version of chest bass ( because it is)
      -vocalized inward bass (vocodah, king inertia, dropical and heartzel use this variant). Sound way more dark, way more deep, way more “thick”, way more “solid”, and LESS AIR-Y than regular un vocalized inward bass. This is because the inward vocals are being added to the unvocalized inward bass, resulting in a much lower bass, just like vocalized chest bass is much more low and solid sounding than the normally much-airier chest bass. Can be done with inward falsetto for the “high vocalized inward bass”, that inertia and vocodah are also well-known for. Much more powerful, naturally louder, and “thicker” in tone than the inngressive phonation bass, because the true vocal chords are not the only things being vibrated. The epiglottis is much higher in mass than the true vocal chords and thus produces much louder and much more bass-pure tones than the true vocal chords are capable of producing
      -d low inward bass-just as dark and bass-pure and solid as vocalized inward bass, but also with an added “gurgle-y” effect which sounds more water-y and grumble-y, this is due to d low’s use of the inward evil bass simulataneously with the inward bass.
      -helium inward bass-much more solid than unvocalized inward bass, but much less air-y than vocalized inward bass, way more “dry” and less “bubble-y”. This is because helium’s inward bass is essentially vocalized inward bass but with the air intake to the lungs completely “shut off”, he explains this in his tutorial in Russian, but there are generously-provided English subtitles

      Thank you for taking time to explain about inward bass. Many beatboxers want to learn this sound, but it's really frustraiting to understand and takes time to master. I think this teqnicue have so much unrealised potential, even with known masters of inward bass (vocodah, inertia, d-low). I can't wait to see what beatbox community bring to us in the future.

    Interesting video. It sounds like beatboxing's throat bass creates an effect similar to that of subharmonic singing but in a different way. I've tried following beatbox tutorials for throat bass before but still seem to have trouble with it. I've also tried following your videos on subharmonic singing, and I can kind of get it, albeit inconsistently and not very stably, despite not being much of a singer (which is really cool. BTW). With the idea that throat bass gives a subharmonic effect, I tried throat bass some more and I'm having trouble getting the kind of sound I get when trying subharmonic singing while using the throat bass technique as I understand it. And when I can make that sort of sound, I can't tell if it's because I'm actually using the throat bass technique or if the subharmonic technique is somehow coming in, perhaps differently from how it does when I purposely try for it. Would it be possible for you with your perspective on both arts to do a video that goes into some more detail about these two techniques, how they differ, and how to do them? I don't think there's much comparing and contrasting the two techniques, and I think having that would be helpful. Thanks!

    Your next video should be about the other side of the spectrum, well what i would think would be. Double voice (show-go) and tripple voice (susay)! Please react to "susay-tripple voice"!!!! I think it will blow your mind! I would love to see you analyze it and try to figure it out as well. I love your detailed vids man keep it up!

    Hey David! Would you be able to send me dry DI tracks of you using all the different techniques at your disposal? I'd love to make a spectral analysis of them, to see what are the characteristics of each technique and to help us visualise what is really happening with the harmonics (perhaps in a video format)! If you (or anybody in comment section) are interested, PM me.
