It's a very unique game even today. It's so sad what happened to the game. It deserves new life. The problem with Fantasy Flight Games (new owner of the property) is that they add TOO MUCH to a game with extra management. Card games shouldn't force you to have a ton of chips, counters or whatever as a requirement to start playing.
It’s as you say. Granted, a lot of the rules changes grasped the setting really well. (Fate as currency makes better flavor sense if samurai are above the handling of wealth, honor matters to every player, and so forth.) But it just ended up being so dense that it was almost always miserable to play.
The only thing that happened is game devs playing tourneys to give best bud cards so they kept exchanging tourney wins. Would ban cards he didnt like on the spot, and the company was a bunch of bros NOT a business.
L5R CCG was amazing, L5R LCG started strong but was almost entirely downhill for it's lifespan. A reall shame the mismanagement of Fantasy Flight Games and Asmodee destroyed the IP. I was a very big fan of the Lion clan.
It had been mismanaged for many years. I was one of the designers for lion clan cards. :)
L5R was an incredible franchise. The fact that tourney results helped drive the storyline was very innovative, and the story arcs were epic.
"The Gamers 3" is a low-budget film that features a major story point of one of the characters competing in a tourney for a fictitious, L5R-based game called Romance of the Nine Empires which was actually later released as a complete boxed set game.
I’m glad you shot the video and figured out the order of the cards, mine fell of the shelf and I hadn’t organized them with sleeves. I typically place starters or sets like this as separate decks so I can learn to play. I am collecting the LCG and almost completed it all, I plan to get more of either Twenty Festivals or the Emperor Edition. In terms of look I like these later sets but also have some really early cards through some collections I’ve bought.
I picked up a crab clan starter deck from the clearance shelf of my LGS years ago. I knew nothing of the game and when I opened it, I was blown away. The contents, the presentation, the lore etc.
Absolutely an amazing game and I wish I could’ve experienced it in its hay day
Hida!!!!
Our best local FABTCG player came from L5R and had an invite to worlds before they canceled it. He managed to win a nats invite for FAB last year within 2 months of starting to play.
The old L5r ccg had some of the best starter sets of any game.
Unicorn Clan. More maneuver based strategy of switching to different battlefields etc. Sort of a Mongolian/Japanese mix of character types and flavor♥ I always thought that L5R had some of the best and eye catching art in the earlier TCGs.
Hills Wholesale Gaming is GOATED, I got a ton of LOTR TCG from them for incredibly cheap back in the day, along with Panini DBZ when that was a thing, fantastic customer service and prices even for me in canada
Agreed 💯 %
This was, is, and ever will be the best card game. The Lore was absorbing, this was my Game of thrones. I wish they would revive this game, maybe restart it after Daigotsu Kanpeki conquered Rokugan.
I played the hell out of L5R. (Shosuro tetsu of scorpion clan. Middle man in the scorpion/dragon koku deal that kept our clan safe from corruption) the immersion is what brought me to flesh and blood. (Sadly the ffg reboot was not great)
This was my favorite TCG ever. I was HUGE into it when it came out, till it died. I still miss it, and wish to see it come back out, or something that has that same character and feel.
I still remember when I started. It was Emperor Edition; the shop had two starter decks left at the time, the Spider Clan and the Scorpion Clan. I bought Spider for myself and Scorpion for my friend. However, I ultimately ended up playing as a Lion Clan player for the majority of my time with L5R.
There's also a small, niche community that plays online via a certain program, trying to keep a certain portion of the community alive.
Both CCG from AEG and the LCG from FFG were phenomenal games. I really wish the L5R IP would have got more recognition. One of the main reasons I was drawn into playing FAB is that is gives me the same kind of feels as the non-MTG card games from the late 90's
I tried fab, but really didnt fiiled the void that the end of l5r left
Had so much fun playing this game.
This game and the lcg have some of the coolest art in the card game world.
Agreed! They're actually releasing a L5R art book later this year
@@RedZoneRogue thats awesome to hear! I might pick that up. Crane and Scorpion were my favorite clans for art
That Rat Dude Br'nn was named after one of the guys in my Play Group and was a Story Prize Card I think that someone won and prized to him, it is also the Experienced version of that card.
Also not only did the Card Events affect the game, but so did some of the RPG events they did as well like WInters Court.
Played Spider, Scorpion, Phoenix and Mantis Clan.
Scorpion Clan here! I've been missing playing so much! Used to play weekly with local gaming group, sometimes even twice a week. Great memories! The several strategies to win were really solid. Used to aim for dishonor with a courtier deck but I also had military ninja and a mix of military and dishonor with magistrates and courtiers. Miss it!
Awesome vid. Thanks for the heads up about Hills, I plan on picking up some L5r soon.
As someone that played during Jade and Gold, Shadowlands becoming Spider Happened DURING Lotus. I had dropped out of plying the game right when they changed how the rings worked. I kept up with the occasional lore dump.
Spider got their first Stronghold and starter in last expansion of Lotus edition, and that was double-block set (Lotus/Samurai). Shadowlands was still a faction. In Samurai they removed Shadowlands and spider became a new Clan.
PS. As i even always loved big monsters whole idea of immunity to one victory condition was plain stupid.
PPS. Playing big oni guys was possible every edition till the end of game as AEG was printing bunch of onis and "unaligned" Strongholds like The Maw's Grave, The Forgotten Temple etc. Later they even released Ikikashi Sensei that allowed to corrupt ANY clan and play shadowland and undead dudes without honor loss. You may check all of those cards in Oracle of the Void database.
Yeah I played this game from 2000-2007 constantly. Kept up with it a bit since then.
You know, I've always thought it would be awesome if someone created a game based on the Dynasty period of China. Lu Bu would be an instant buy for me
Phoenix Clan all the way! Really loved this game back in the day and I even ran a website dedicated to it for about four years. Lots of fun and good times. I still bust it out every now and again to relive the magic. The LCG was not a fun game in my opinion.
I was on playtest and design for L5R before they sold it (During diamond, lotus and samurai). Argyle and Baker were fantastic artists for the game. Cool guys too.
i miss this game so much
I played Crane when you had to win with 40 honor and then I had a Scorpion deck that was all about theatrics and my last deck was a Spider deck. I had 1 friend who played this game with me and my LGS closed after he got fired.
The L5R living card game. Really was a swing and a massive miss. I always loved the art style. Wish it would come back as a TCG.
Why? TCG's are expensive to the point where most people cant afford to play more than 1-2. I WISH more companies used the LCG model, its so much more affordable and consumer friendly for the players.
I really believe that FFG is sitting on a gold mine. All they have to do is convert their LCGs over into a digital format. All their IPs on one client done and managed right would be awesome.
I miss this game. I still have all of my cards and a certificate for when I got to make a contribution to the lore. Honestly this is one of the best card games I have ever played and I played it for years. I wish it was still around. I love the Dragon Clan and Toturi’s Army. I made a duelist dragon deck and my Crain buddy would always go head to head. Great video
l5r is very cool. I'm mostly familiar with the ffg stuff.
There were two problems with the lcg:
1. The buy in was awful, you had to buy multiple expensive intro kits like a super expensive starter deck just to play the game, which is probably why people reflexively dismiss the concept of Expandable Card Games (LCG is a trademark by ffg)
2. The game was REALLY hard to play. The amount of granular decisions you made per turn was nuts, you had board game elements, resource management, multiple battle phases a turn, and cards you can play from hand. I played 20 games against the same person and I only won 3 times.
The IP was put on the back burner because fantasy flight's digital game team was a money pit and they cut other parts of the company to recover. A shame because I really enjoyed their take on the table top rpg.
Thanks for sharing your source on these.
I started with L5R in November 95 and am still working on decks for the CCG today, January 2024. Lion Clan was my first Imperial Edition starter, but I mostly played Toturi's Army, Lion Clan and Ronin. Still love the game. A shame that Asmodee has treated it like it has.
L5R is the one roboot that I would snap buy
I played yoritomos alliance, which was mantis bolstered by minor clans and I played phoenix clan. I have a awesome Shiba tsukune foil card
An incredible card game
Unfortunately only myself and three of my friends played
It’s a bummer that the game went away
It’s the only TCG to ever pull me away from yugioh from how in depth and fun it was
And Crab clan all day every day!
I have tens of thousands of cards from Emerald through Diamond. I got in just after Imperial Edition - so I only have a couple of Ancestral Swords. I need to go through the collection and sort it, but with 2 triple-card boxes, 6 double-wide, and 2 single - it's gonna take a loooong time. I also tended to play Crane, although my main Clan was Scorpion. The only cards I never got my hands on were the special Imperial Assembly ones you got from mail-away offers.
This is a great game, and the CCG is much superior to the LCG. I also prefer the older rules pre-Diamond and still play/build with that mindset.
Crane and Scropion! Well met
If you can, try the first 2 Arcs. Imo, *that* is the true L5R.
Phoenix clan primary player, but did build decks for every clan so a role was always filled during table games. My personal favorite was a fallen bags deck I built with the coils of madness tin set.
So much nostalgia. I've built a phoenix and dragon deck. L5R is a masterpiece. Probably why I'm loving Dromai and Katsu artwork in FAB 😅
Love the game. I began playing around the 15th anniversary (in celestial) and jumped head first into the Phoenix clan, but did branch out to playing every clan and had a Ronin deck and an oni deck to fill a gap for table games. I had sold my collection but missed the game enough to track down as much as I could.
Steve Argyle was also Art Director for AEG for some time. Btw a Crab girl you stopped at last pack (Hida Ayamako) is also painted by him.
Yeah! I've actually spoken with him about it! Steve's a great dude
I played Dragon & Lion before.
I was a Unicorn player! It was the Clan whose starter deck was the only one in the LGS at the time my “sensei” introduced me to the game. I stuck with them though because I was reading Sun Tzu’s Art of War at the time, and the Cavalry mechanic seemed a good way to follow the book’s advice of going the path of least resistance in war. But I quickly grew fond of their lore, particularly their Compassion for the lower castes, and the fact that their courtiers weren’t silver-tongued manipulators like most other Clans’, but were just about building friendships wherever possible. And the Battle Maidens! What a badass faction they were! Like you say, this game was all about the lore and how players could influence that lore.
My buddy and I are currently inventorying the 30k or so L5R cards from the last 20 years, and starting to play again, Hills Discount gaming has a lot of inexpensive sealed L5R
Oh I've heard about this game. Can you still buy it
There are many places that still carry it! Most boxes are quite cheap still
@@RedZoneRogue cool thanks
I played from 1998 through the end of the game.
There are a number of old sealed products still out there and many are cheap.
Hill's Wholesale Gaming, eBay, Potomac Distribution are a few that have sealed product.
Docangst, Imperial Auction Block have quite a selection of single cards.
@@Kolat_Informant oh 1998? I had no idea it came out that early
@@drowningin It was originally released in 1995. I didn't start playing until it 1998
an incredible game for its time. part of me wonders if the publisher went downhill putting out extravagantly presented products like this, though.
best ccg! I miss you L5R CCG!
I am Crab Clan! I have a tatto about it
I played Crane honor runner, and Ninja control. L5R is still one of my favorite ccgs of all time. I wish more companies would allow tournament results to impact story. It made everyone far more invested in the world.
I also always wanted to build a Sparrow deck, even if it was pure disfunctional jank.
To be fair, all they were doing was re-writing the original game lore of L5R's Clan War, which was already completed 25 years ago. And the original was better than what they had gotten through so far at FFG. I think a lot of the things they wanted to change were with good intentions, but the finished product always felt sloppy and poorly thought out.
A pretty simple example is changing Hoturi to Hotaru. While it's cool to have representation for same-sex relationships in Horatu's affair with Kachiko, the thing is, Hoturi had a very intrinsic role with the original story. He was still the lover of Kachiko, but he was also the father of her first child Bayushi Dairu, which was important because she was married to the head of the Scorpion Clan, Bayushi Shoju. And of course, Dairu was killed by Hoturi, a fact he didn't learn until much later. This also led to Kachiko to take revenge on Hoturi for killing their son.
Hotaru was just... kinda there. Her only plotline was that her dad wanted her to be a boy. Which seems kinda odd for a setting with the Matsu and the Otaku families which had sizable contingents of female warriors. Even the original L5R setting had been pretty good about ensuring its female characters had agency (or, like their male counterparts, at times did not because of the conflicts of Duty and Honor), and had storylines that didn't reduce them to being a love interest or an object to be rescued.
And that was just the FFG L5R in a nutshell. It's the CGI Lion King. Yeah, it's basically the same thing, but you're better off just re-watching the original again.
yes L5R I consider one of the best CCGs made, EPIC. love it.k
@RedZoneRogue Hey, if you want to try the BEST and coolest dead ccg that most do not know, you really should try Ophidian 2350 CCG. As for L5R it is indeed one of the best, not Ophidian, but I also still play it today. L5R Naga ans Scorpion player forever!!!
Phoenix Clan here. Looking at the cards (14:17 for example) it says AEG at the bottom. Did they get it back and Fantasy lost it? I'm confused or are they saying that the original art is from AEG
Shadowlands was its own thing but spider branched from them come lotus
I just had a question : I bought two starter decks sealed from the Diamond Edition, and, first, the cards that have the black back and the green back were mixed together, and a lot of the cards were not belonging to the clan the starter deck was supposed to belong to. Is that normal ?
I miss the original when AEG had it before Fantasy took over
Brotherhood of shinsei player here.
As a Crab player, I must say I hate your deck, sorry but clan rules. 😁That being said great video, it's nice to see L5R get some love even if it's a "dead" game
I do have some concerns. I went to the website that you mentioned and they’re selling a booster box of Seeds of Decay for only $14! How can that be?! Seems like a steal. I’m worried it could be fake… would love your feedback.
I've bought from hillswholesalegaming A TON and never had any problems with fakes or anything. They just have excellent pricing (they used to have even better pricing before the TCG collectible boom in 2020)
@@RedZoneRogue I appreciate the response! If you think they’re good and have never had issues then I’ll take your word for it. Only $14 for a booster box just seems too good to be true. Especially for an vintage ccg.
Edit: sorry actually $12*
@@NotTellingYou- L5R is usually pretty cheap because of the LCG that outmoded it. One of the few remaining good TCGs from the 90s that you can buy for cheap
@@RedZoneRogue okay cool, I’ll give it a shot. Thanks for the help!

To all of the people who played the original L5R (not the LCG), why did it die, in your opinion?
Why the lcg died is well know, but for the og, everyone I've ever heard talk about it had nothing but positive things to say, it had an excellent theme and art, the rules are maybe not the most intuitive with the provinces and the dynasty deck, but nothing too complicated; all the gameplay I could gather from the internet seems a ton of fun, so why did it end?
From what I've gathered it all boils down to the game just not selling well at the end.
@@RedZoneRogue that's such a shame. If it were active today I would play the heck out of it
@@teifan6674 big same. I'm always hoping for a proper reboot someday 🙏
@@RedZoneRogue It's also weird that there's no new card game that has tried reinventing its formula. Magic, pokemon, yu gi oh and even fab all have indie card games inspired by their mechanics, but not l5r. I really find the concept of a separate, public replenishing hand quite unique in a constructed game. It's usually something you just see in deckbuilders. There's so much you can do with that
