    I think when the Lonely Old Dear says, "It's... your father's blood", I believe she isn't referring to the sedatives, but the player's actions. That you attacked and killed her because you had your father's blood (believing you to be her son) in you since birth, so you would act the same due to it. Essentially, both the English and Japanese say the same thing, but the English is saying it in a more roundabout way.

    • @LastProtagonist
      @LastProtagonist  3 роки тому +34

      That's a very good way of reading it! It's made a bit more unintuitive since she literally gives the player blood, so it'd seem she's talking about that.

    Since Bloodborne is clearly in part inspired by Lovecraftian horror, it makes sense that te Phtumerians want the Great Ones to sleep. In Lovecraftian horror usually when a Great One sleeps (or slumbers or dreams), it makes the world be "normal" with mostly nothing out of the ordinary happening, while them waking up makes some sort of calimity happen. Also them sleeping somehow blurs the line between life and death, as stated in "The Call of Chtulu": "In his house at R'lyeh, dead Cthulhu waits dreaming." which also ties into your interpretation of dreams, nightmares and death being related.

    Some thought on the executioner gloves: They belong to a literal executioner, not to Logarius band. The vengeful spirits are from the people the executioner killed. When Logarius and his band attacked cainhurst their wheels where just that, wheels. Only after smashing the vilebloods they became infused with these spirits.
    So a thougth on the spirits: Annalise is immortal. She shared her blood with some residents of Cainhurst. What if the vengeful spirits are a unique quirk to the vilebloods, basically being semi immortal. The bodies can be destroyed, but their consciousness is undying. By murdering vilebloods these undying spirits got bound to the wheels.
    A thing I thought of while riting this: What if the original executioner betrayed Cainhurst. He found out that by properly executing vilebloods there spirits get bound, not released. Then he infromed Logarius about this and the Logarius Executioners attacked Cainhurst. This why they call themself Executioners and their weapon of choice is modeled after the breaking wheel, a instrument of brutal execution for murderers and robbers.
    I think this execution is more symbolic. Instead of "just" killing someone a execution is more of formal prozess and a form of punishment. This may sound a bit weird but for me, "executing someone" is a more definite way to kill someone. Instead of saying "he was killed", or "he was stabbed to death", he was executed sounds far more severe and implies that the person in question was punished for something.
    Intead of simply killing the vilebloods, the executioners want to punish them, by exectuing them and binding their spirits to their weapons, making sure they suffer/can't come back.
    This just a thought I had just know. There are probably many instances that debunk my theory. But I'm not a Loremaster.

    • @LastProtagonist
      @LastProtagonist  3 роки тому +6

      You don't need to be a loremaster to engage with the lore! Just pick a topic that interests you and explore it. You're actually quite close with your idea behind the blood. =) If you want to learn more about it, I suggest checking out my videos on the Old Blood and Vilebloods.

      Another interesting theory that builds upon yours is that, knowing that more corrupted blood is more powerful (the japanese lore makes this pretty explicit) the executioners might have intentionally wanted to get some of that power for themselves... so getting rid of the vilebloods by trapping their spirits in their weapons, they'd eliminate their rivals that knew too much while also adding their power to their own.

    I feel like Djura being called "retired“ has more to to with him having once dreamed, meaning he was once with Gehrman and the Doll (and has been retired by Gehrman offing his head), not retired as in "he’s not a hunter anymore“…
    Although that would also make sense, since Djura doesn’t hunt beasts anymore!
    Yes it’s not the same word, but I’d say with these two aspects "retired“ is actually more(!) informative than just "old“.

    These videos have been a wonderful boon to understanding this game's lore. I must say that with these translations, though the core of the game's story remains more or less the same, it does alter enough seemingly minor plot points into a grander or different context at times. One example would be the meddling of Byrgenwerth into the affairs of the Old Ones. In the Japanese text, they have a much stronger tendency to use spiritual or mystical terminology when describing anything involving the more "Lovecraftian" elements of Bloodborne. This is striking to me as I think it highlights a theme that gets overlooked in the English translation.
    Byrgenwerth is often described as a sort of University or College, and these terms in our modern context strongly imply a secular or in general non mystical way of thinking. To Master Willem, the Old Ones and the things related to them were a mystery that you can simply examine, cut and dissect apart in a flat, clinical way of thinking. Very much mimicking the experiments and scientific method seen during our real world Victorian Era, quite horrific at times if you know your history.
    But on the other hand, those that walked away from Willem did something of great significance; they made a Church. It always struck me as odd that these hardline clinical scientists would make a separate organization with all the trappings and effects of spirituality. However these translations and the emphasis on using mystical terminology when discussing One One related phenomena puts fourth an interesting idea. What if the split between Master Willem and Lawrence was not just because one wanted to use the Old Blood and the other did not, but because one side saw the Old Ones and the things they could do and actually believed they were Gods? Why else would one make a Church if not to worship something? After all we see Vicar Amelia praying before we fight her, so wouldn't that imply that the split that occurred in Byrgenwerth was of a more philosophical and esoteric nature than just over what tools to use to achieve enlightenment?
    Those are just my two cents, sorry for the rant.

    • @warmybear437
      @warmybear437 3 роки тому +2

      Its all valid & super interesting discussion :P Some stuff gets lost in translation but ultimately the translators were still based in Japan & working alongside FromSoft/Sony and it's better than a direct translation which would just come across as very clumsy nowadays. While I feel like I have a fairly solid headcanon for most of the Dark Souls lore, Bloodborne...maybe the lovecraftian influences just make me more accepting of things I don't quite understand, or the gaps in what we know.

    • @PonderingSai
      @PonderingSai 3 роки тому +1

      @@warmybear437 I feel much the same way, as I love Dark Souls, but Bloodborne has a way of just pulling me in that the other games can't quite manage. It's a sort of feeling like there is something just around the corner that will grant some great revelation about the lore of Bloodborne, a sort of tantalizing hint of something greater hiding in plain sight.

    I believe the "it’s your father’s blood“ bay the Lonely Old Dear is meant to imply the exact same as her Japanese counterpart…
    Iirc she thinks the Hunter is her child/grandchild, that’s why she gives you sedatives to begin with, and when you kill her and show your true (bloodthirsty) ways, she reckons it‘s because you have the same blood as your father.
    Basically she uses it as another version of "the apple does Fall far off the tree“ or "like father like son“.

    WRT point 2, I think both "to" and "from" work equally well, considering the game's Lovecraftian influence. In many of Lovecraft's works, dreams and nightmares aren't just mental states, but are more like alternate dimensions or planes of reality. Dreams are no less real than the waking world, they're just a different world entirely. So the fact that the Hunter wakes from a nightmare rather than to a nightmare is a bit of a moot point--the Hunter wakes both from and to a nightmare.

    Molotov cocktails have an interesting etymology or origin.
    During the Winter War in 1939 when the Soviet Union launched an invasion of Finland during the Winter, they would fly over the country and drop bombs. When Finland complained to the international community about the flights and bombs, the Soviet Foreign Minister Molotov said they were dropping care packages of food to the Finns. So Molotov's Food Packages became bombs. Thus when Finns would encircle and take out a column of tanks using improvised incendiary devices often made with alcohol and gasoline, they would be lovingly called "Molotov cocktails" in reference to the unjustified bombings and the devices being made with alcohol. So it was a kind of fuck you to Soviet lies and propaganda.

    Alfred is by far my most hated character in Bloodborne. Not only does he appear to be just a executioner wannabe, but he is a total moron as well. Think about it. He wants to go to Cainhurst just to kill Logarius so Logarius can be a true martyr and kills himself afterwards, so Alfred is a Martyr himself. He even fashions a crwon of illusions for himself. He thinks he killed Annalise, but doesn't know she is undying.
    He follows Logarius philosophy of: You should always do good things, even if they may not be the smartest option.
    That is exactly what we see here. He blindly emulates Logarius teachings, ultimatly removing the last line of defense from the vilebloods (Logarius himself) and allowing Annalise to come back. It may take a while for her to regenerate herself, but no one is there to stop her now.
    Granted the player kills Logarius and CAN invite Alfred to Cainhurst. But even if we could get the invetation before Logarius, Alfred still would have tried to kill Logarius. I guess it's supposed to be a lesson about that you shouldn't blindly emulate religions, cults or ideology. But F you Alfred. Logarius should have kicked your ass and make you realise what a pathetic moron wannabe you are.

      Dude. I thought it was pretty clear at this point. Of course they don't care. They don't even care about their games that much either. It's literally the same things from past games they've made , recycled. The reason it's 'cryptic' is because they haven't worked on plot at all. They just come up with a rough idea and make up some terms and present it as 'cryptic' while in reality they just don't have a plot . It's very clear. Wish more people would realize this. I mean even their director has admitted it lol

      @@Bluetag9009 I want to turn it into a novel. Thing is it's copyrighted.But it wasn't wasted neccesarily because it's a videogame but because of the company that produced it. If it was made in the style of the witcher with proper engaging plot it would've been great. However the 'story' for me gets ruined when instead of beasts it turns into aliens. I felt it was a huge let down. Beasts being actually citizens should've been kept as the whole point of the story with the big reveal at the end. Suits the gothic style way more than hentai tentacles lol

    This is my first time seeing one of your videos. The cadence of your vocal delivery is quite sing-songy and I found it off-putting. I don’t mean for that to be insulting or for you to take it personally, it’s just something to consider.

We can also pretend that no one has ever studied intonation, public speaking and broadcast journalism. We can even pretend that none of those things are relevant to or helpful for creating content for UA-cam.
      Since we’ve already agreed that this isn’t “made for me” then we should go ahead and admit that it isn’t made for you either... or the other people that watched it. We can also agree that my opinion doesn’t matter but I’m afraid that I’ll have to insist that no one else’s opinion matters either. So, we’ll go ahead and agree that must mean that the quality of the video doesn’t matter since no one can say otherwise. If the quality of the video doesn’t matter then I guess the video itself doesn’t really matter either and we can all just forget about it and move along. Though I'm not familiar with Japanese, I wouldn't disparage the usage of "eldritch truth" and the multiple translations for that one word in Japanese. From what you said, that one consistent Japenese word means "arcane mysteries" or "sacred mysteries", which given the context of the game and the inspiration behind it, seems to clearly imply eldritch knowledge.

    I took references to comrade Molotov, Hippocrates and Spartans to be thing where it obviously isn't on Earth and they're not actually speak English. Similarly how Tolkienverse stories are supposed to be "translations" from in-world archives and references to Earth stuff represents that. I thought it'd take place in some nameless fantasy world otherwise.
    Never crossed my mind that people would consider Yharnam and its surroundings to be anywhere in real Earth. lol

    The localization is close enough that most of these are actually the conclusions I came to anyway. so IMO they did fine.
    Alfred calling himself logarius's "protege" didnt match up with any of the facts. we see for ourselves later he's a raving lunatic. Him convincing himself, or at least wanting to convince the player, of a closer relationship with his idol makes total sense for several possible reasons. I know better than to trust that any given character in a soulsborne is a reliable narrator.
    Similar shit for most of the others
    not all though
