    Ian,
    If a cookbook says "Peppers" with no qualifier on type, it means Bell Peppers. The spicy green "peppers" are actually chili peppers, but tend to just be refered to as chilis in cookbooks.

  • @equatebytop
    @equatebytop 6 років тому +377

    Ian oh no. Draining grease into the sink is gonna clog your pipes. Not obvious for beginner cooks (I've made the same mistake too) but "drain" doesn't mean pour it in the drain. When you're draining meat like ground beef or sausage, set a colander or strainer on top of the styrofoam dish thing it's packaged on and let the grease drain into that. Then later when it's solidified you can just throw the whole thing away. If there's no styrofoam like when you're cooking bacon then you can drain into a glass container lined with paper towels, throw those away when it's solid, and then wash out the glass with dish soap.

    Couple things:
    1: I do not recommend pouring grease from meat down the drain. If there is a liquid from meat, it's probably grease. Drain it through a colander onto some paper towel on a plate or large pan. I'd recommend doing this in the sink though, it won't be as bad if a little bit gets in the sink. It matters when more than a teaspoon goes down the drain.
    2: A baguette actually wouldn't be bad for a dipping side honestly. They are surprisingly versatile for those purposes.
    3: Seriously don't try to save dropped food. I'm no germophobe, but it doesn't take much for the one really bad thing to get in and make you really sick. Bacteria doubles every 20 mins at room temperature, exponential etc. The microwaving probably killed it, but I wouldn't recommend taking the chance.
    4: Consider getting a few of these items if you don't have them already: Colander, dry measuring cups, pans with lids (Anything from casserole pans to cake pans, even if it's plastic, it can be good for preservation) and an apron. Also, avoid hot sugar. Those are nasty burns you DO NOT want! (Just recovered from one at work a month ago)
    5: Whenever you do things like break walnuts, graham crackers, Oreos, etc. Put them in a plastic bag first. Makes a lot less mess.
    I don't intend to sound condescending or anything, but if you are interested in making foods power to you man! As a baker, I've learned a lot of small things for home and professional food creation. You're doing fairly good overall for someone who clearly is out of their element. (Hard boiled egg is just an egg in boiling water for over 10 minutes. Much easier to make than a soft boiled one I gotta say). I look forward to what you create and how you improve over time!

      What a sad, sad life you must lead, that you are offended by the very notion of people liking something on the internet that you don't like, and those people also happening to like something that you do like.
      I can't imagine going through life like that, where my self worth was based on needing everyone I came into contact with to like the same things as me, nothing more, and nothing less.
      I pity you. It must be a cold, lonely, loveless hell of an existence, knowing that literally no one in the world shares all of your interests, exactly. You can't even love your own mother.
      To quote the Doctor -- if that's ok; I wouldn't want to taint your enjoyment of Doctor Who with my vile, Homestuck-loving filth (assuming you even like Doctor Who in the first place, of course. If not, forgive me for presuming.) -- "You're already dead. There's nothing I can do. I'm sorry. I am so, so sorry."

    • @McBehrer

      It occurs to me that I might have misjudged the tone of your initial remark. Given how you knew that we were referencing Homestuck without either of us saying so, and used words like "other," you may have been implying that you, too, are"Homestuck filth," and were not just insulting us, as I first thought.
      If this is the case, I apologize for jumping to conclusions, and offer this advice: "wound" is not the word you want. You probably meant something like "amuses."
      If not, and you WERE just saying that you were offended that people who like a thing you dislike happen to also like a thing you like, then... Well, I've already said everything I have to say to you.

    Here's a good tip for cutting. when cutting with a chef/french knife don't saw your food, keep the top of the blade on the table and rock the knife in a circular motion. each cut should only take one solid movement. also for safety its best to keep a wet paper towel under your cutting board to keep it from moving around while cutting.

    The Microwave Cookbook! :D
    Sargento has the market cornered with that 4 state cheddar. It's easy to make your own solid, liquid, and vapor cheese, but you have to generate a wormhole if you want to go get your own plasma cheese. I think they struck a deal with Neil DeGrasse Tyson or something. He's a physics wizard, you know.

    For covering stuff in the microwave I use cling wrap (specifically the Glad brand). It sticks on really nice and has a lot of uses.
    I feel like sharing this tip for microwaving potatoes:
    First wash potato, poke some holes in it (I just kinda stab it like a madwoman, you do you), cover it with the plastic wrap and toss that bad boy in there. Depending on size it can take anywhere from 6 to 8 minutes. Experiment with the time and monitor it a little. Poke it with a fork and if it goes through all the way it's done.
    I use this method mainly to quickly cook sweet potatoes for recipes but it's good for a quick snack too. Much better potato than just tossing it in there. If you want to bake a potato, I recommend covering it in some olive oil and salt before you put it in the oven.

If I could give a suggestion for a another video, this one wouldn't be a big deal, except for how it'll affect your health and teeth but; how about one on childhood snacks you don't need to really prepare like cereals, fruit snacks, the Betty Crocker fruit ones (roll ups, by the foot, gushers), dunkaroos (I never had them), ect?

    You only really need different cutting boards if you work in foodservice, and then only in the facility. At home it's a good practice to avoid cross-contamination, but not necessary.
    Also, green bell peppers are often just called green pepper.
    Source: I'm a cook who apparently is no fun at parties.

      I had a knife that I previously used for opening ground beef, and I used the same knife for slicing tomatoes and lettuce without washing (oooops!)

    • @knocknockify
      @knocknockify 6 років тому +16

      Vanspoor's VeePlays I’d argue that avoiding cross-contamination with food at home is also necessary, especially if you’ll be making food to give to people outside of your own family. I wouldn’t wanna be eating fresh veggies from a cutting board that has been used to cut raw chicken. I know there’s soap and all, but prevention is best and easiest tbh.
