This title sequence is like a trip through an amusement park's dark ride. Kudos to David Fain, the animator, who really captured a Saul Bass-like feel, and Don Davis for the creepy, ear-worm music.
Only the ending ghost was a fail for me, and even with it this was insanely good horror movie. without it this was the best horror movie i've ever seen with all the claustrophobia, corpses and ghosts of the dungeons of the asylum. also must mention the way they used the terrifying video clips in the scenes to amp up the feeling of uncomfortable horror and disgust was something brilliant.
That's Dick Beebe, the film's screenwriter, portraying the arrogant "pencil neck" at the beginning. Notice that he doesn't speak a line since he is not a member of the actor's guild.
Seen this movie in the theater. As soon as this opening sequence started, it felt like you’re going to be in for a ride. One of the best opening sequences ever!!
Lamarr Cannon well I was 18 when it came out and the part where Melissa is camcording the basement and sees the ghost on her camera screen then the ghost patient pops out at her gave me nightmares for literally 2 weeks and I dreaded getting up at night to grab a drink or go to the bathroom because of that scene LOL so I feel ya on that one
@@klankfanclub3152 yep that was the scariest scene for me as well but it was even worse for me because this movie was left on when I was 4 years old and it got to that hallway scene and scared the absolute shit out of me I could not go down a dark hallway to even use the bathroom for years
Klank Fan Club damn man same here, the atmosphere is so gruesome, especially what is real evil. Evil is when they operate in you being alive, get you crazy with experiments, and now that negativity has been passed on to haunt and kill you without remorse. That's if you want to come and stay for 1 million dollars, the catch is, well ..you have to be alive by tomorrow. Haha you're kidding, sign me up!!.....
Even though there's some things about this movie that bug me, there's way more about it that I love. One of my all-time favorites. Best opening sequence 10/10
20 years old and this is still one of my favorite horror movies I was 9 when it first came out Missed it in theaters but rented it on vhs Love this creepy opening, sets the tone for the entire thing in how twisted it is
Jordan Lavoie thought I was alone on that one LOL this movie especially the part where Melissa is in the basement and sees the ghosts on her camcorder then the ghost patient pops out at her scared me so bad lol I got home and couldn't sleep without a couple lights on
finaltransconfigurat it was intense in the theater dude! And the scary sounds and noises on the theater surround sound was equally intense. Love this movie and it totally had a big scare factor to it!
I was 10-11 when we had this tape at home and I watched this maybe 50 times. Looking back now I still remember the main theme of this movie on every memory I have from that time and I can still feel the primal fear I was constantly pumped up with, the scariness of this movie mixing up general darkness and loneliness of that time in my childhood.
Eine meiner Film-Lieblings-Anfangs-Sequenzen! Bisher 100 mal zurückgespult auf Video geschaut, aber Rekorder hat den Geist aufgegeben ... Danke fürs hochladen!
Those unforgettable experience when you as a child watching this movie being alone at night. I'll never have it again cause adults're afraid of quite different things
Love this! I had the CD of the Don Davis score on Varese Sarabande back in the day, and Marilyn Manson's "Sweet Dreams" was a perfect fit as well. Really fun movie, too!
The unnerving opening titles and sinister music perfectly set the tone for this. I'd forgotten just how unsettling they are! Watching the film at the cinema was not a comfortable experience - just how it should be!
OH MON, MY all time favorite horror film recreated. I thought it was a remastered art. Now I realized it's a true worthy horror motion picture that is worth the watch
My grandfather brought me and my der sister to see this back in 1999. I did not make it past this opening sequence, as I began to cry when I saw the eye ball, teeth, and x-ray lol. I mean, I WAS only like 6 years old 🤣
Fun fact: Robert Zemeckis & Joel Silver actually approached Tim Burton to direct and write this remake, but couldn’t due to scheduling with Sleepy Hollow…could actually hear Danny Elfman composing something like this too haha Awesome movie, awesome opening! This and 13 Ghosts were fun to watch
A little trivia here: The bird thing that appears at the end (right behind the director credit) is the monster of Ravenna, who happens to be one of the first monsters that went viral in medieval Europe, thanks to bestiaries and gossip.
One can just imagine (myself for instance) standing in a room with a number of people scattered all around on torture devices, torturing each one individually with all the screaming going on as well as the organ playing in the background to put my mind at ease whilst doing such things. Overall this “sequence” is so relaxing, mentally speaking of course.
Such a great horror movie theme...the nerve shattering music, the images, the random, well timed screams sprinkled in. Unfortunately, the theme was much better than the actual movie imho.
I remember being in 5th grade when this came out and seeing this in theaters… This movie traumatized me and my friends. We had never seen anything like this, the special effects in this movie we had never seen anything like this in 1999 or any year below… It freeked us out for sure 😂😂😂
+Norman Roscher not really. The Conjuring franchise wasn't scary at all. This film gave me fucking nightmares. I mean I do like those movies, but they just aren't that *scary* .
This was so much fun; and I’ve yet to see the hypnotic/reverse motion effects they gave the ghosts in anything since this. Scared me badly then but nowadays I’m just trying to figure out how they did it. 😁
Esa apertura del castillo con la película se me quedó grabado desde niño, nunca supe que era de esta pelicula, ya después vi la película pero nunca vi el opening..... Hasta que lo encontré justo este día y coincide con lo que recuerdo con la pelicula
Scariest opening of horror films, plus at that time, im watching this movie without electricity but by generator and on cd at that time, make it more factor to scare the shit out of me..well, you know the feeling watching horror movie in the dark place...😓😓😓
Saw and House on haunted hill should be a great crossover film the key is find a baphomet statue to win $7,000,000 and X mark the spot live or die make your choice
If you have ever seen this movie then you would remember the roller coaster scene and and didnt really get it even though i watch the movie over and over again I cant figure out how the roller coaster was first fine then I seen the track brake off, then they like idk how to say it they it looks like they fell of the roller coaster; but then it switches to Steven price and him and his wife on the phone and this dude that kept an eye on the roller coaster is like i think we got a problem, and then out of nowhere their back on the track but they totally fell off the tracks ,but how did they end up back there?
This part scared me so much as a kid but now it seems cheesy and dated. Help I've been desensitized! 😂 However the music score is stellar and gives me a Bram Stoker's Dracule vibe!
I don’t get the hate for this film at all. I think it’s a great modern adaptation of the Vincent price version. The only cgi is towards the end. I really enjoy this film because it’s actually really scary and is hilarious at times. Geoffrey rush and Ali larter are exceptional in it as well
Whats with the baby doll head that shows up during the sequence, there was like NOTHING in the movie that showed anything like that. and why's the opening filled with x-rays and pictures of the human body?
Well the house in this version of the film is meant to be an old insane asylum, the human body pictures were probably for medical use as for the dolls they might have had children guests at one point so dolls seemed to be the way to go.
bob Last yeah there was the embalmed skinned corpse of a baby in a display case in the basement of the House on Haunted Hill that Vanicutt kept. By the way the embalmed corpses in display cases in the movie were replicas of actual real medical experimentations on dead bodies by a French doctor in the late 1890's which added a creep factor the movie
Good movie though it doesn't hold a candle to the original with Vincent Price. Geoffrey Rush as Stephen Price was the only likeable character in the movie. Creepy intro music to be sure, nonetheless.
They really wasted Jeffrey Combs in this movie. He's in it for what, two minutes maybe? His character of the crazy doctor should have played a bigger part in the story.
The transition from Dark Castle to the opening theme is fantastic.
And cloudy dark Warner Bros is excellent
i dunno what it is about this music but no other theme has left me with a sense of unease. its so effective.
Liam Edwards I think it's the uneasy shift between minor and major thirds in the melody. I think.
i think the only other theme that is weirdly strange is the final destination one
This title sequence is like a trip through an amusement park's dark ride. Kudos to David Fain, the animator, who really captured a Saul Bass-like feel, and Don Davis for the creepy, ear-worm music.
This movie turns 20 years old this year. Still one of my favorite horror movies of all time. And a damn good horror theme as well.

Seen this movie in the theater. As soon as this opening sequence started, it felt like you’re going to be in for a ride. One of the best opening sequences ever!!
This movie scared me and gave me nightmares as a child and still scares me til this day they don't make horror movies like this no more
Lamarr Cannon well I was 18 when it came out and the part where Melissa is camcording the basement and sees the ghost on her camera screen then the ghost patient pops out at her gave me nightmares for literally 2 weeks and I dreaded getting up at night to grab a drink or go to the bathroom because of that scene LOL so I feel ya on that one
Lamarr Cannon Yeah. To me it was scary, because all the atrocities commited in mental hospitals were real.
This intro give me heebie jeebies as a kid
Vannacutt is a very, very unsettling antagonist.
@@klankfanclub3152 yep that was the scariest scene for me as well but it was even worse for me because this movie was left on when I was 4 years old and it got to that hallway scene and scared the absolute shit out of me I could not go down a dark hallway to even use the bathroom for years
Nothing puts me in the mood for bed like the House on Haunted Hill opening sequence!
Most disturbing opening title sequence ever made.
ThatHauntFreak2 so true i watched this with the age of 8 and couldn`t go alone in the basement until i was 18
ThatHauntFreak2 I saw this when I was 5 now I know where my childhood went
That Carnival of Souls profile pic.
5 years, 8years... Where the F*** were your parents at this moment !?
Yep this is up there with Se7en
One of the most underrated horror movies I think!
Norman Roscher totally agree with you! This is my number one favorite horror movie EVER!
This beats human centipede 10 times over
Klank Fan Club damn man same here, the atmosphere is so gruesome, especially what is real evil. There is something about this film and I can't put my finger on it but they got the creep factor down to a T.
One of the best remakes and one of the most underrated gem in the horror genre.
The screaming man & the music plus the imagery really give it a feel of insane which was what the film was about
for a horror remake of a 1950s movie, this is surprisingly great
SpacemanDoug how's the original?
It's really good as well, though can get a bit cheesy for today's standards
To he fair this one has it's cheesy moments too, which is a shame cuz it had massive potential. I rate it as half great.
This is where american horror story got its inspiration from
Even though there's some things about this movie that bug me, there's way more about it that I love. One of my all-time favorites. Best opening sequence 10/10
Truly one of the scariest movies of all time... these special effects are incredible!
Been 20 years, the opening sequence still scares me
Makes me wonder why this kind of animation is not used as much anymore
Seizures most likely. XD
Film companies would rather use cgi instead of stop motion animation and practical effects, it's cheaper.
Lack of creativity, lack of emotion
20 years old and this is still one of my favorite horror movies
I was 9 when it first came out
Missed it in theaters but rented it on vhs
Love this creepy opening, sets the tone for the entire thing in how twisted it is
One of my favorite horror movies. This is definitely a classic horror movie remake. The intro is so well done!
One of my favorites. Love the opening and theme song.
I remember when I saw this movie in theaters back in 99 it scared me so badly that I had 2 sleep with the lights on that night
Jordan Lavoie can't imagine this shit on a screen that big omg!
Jordan Lavoie thought I was alone on that one LOL this movie especially the part where Melissa is in the basement and sees the ghosts on her camcorder then the ghost patient pops out at her scared me so bad lol I got home and couldn't sleep without a couple lights on

I had a mattress on my parents floor for at three nights
I saw it close to Halloween back in 1999 as well
I love watching this movie during halloween
I regretted seeing this in the theater when this started up 😂
Absolutely loved this film oh yeah!
When I watched this in the cinema, this intro with the music was the main thing that stuck with me. Amazing piece of music!
omg man I saw this when I was about 7 and it has been my fave
film ever since!
finaltransconfigurat it's my number one favorite horror movie EVER! :-) love this one
Saw it when I was 5 fucked me up permanently
5 years, 7years... Where the F*** were your parents at this moment !?
This part stayed with me the most as a child
This intro still makes me feel unsettled just by watching it. I haven't seen this movie since I was little.

And in the very next scene, screenwriter dies lol; no seriously the guy with the pencils in the next scene is Dick Beebe, the screenwriter lol.
Those unforgettable experience when you as a child watching this movie being alone at night. I'll never have it again cause adults're afraid of quite different things
I seen alot of thriller/horror movies up until now and this is still in my top 10
Just saw this on AMC the other day and wanted to see the opening credits again. It's a good movie and some aspects of the film are creepy.
Love this! I had the CD of the Don Davis score on Varese Sarabande back in the day, and Marilyn Manson's "Sweet Dreams" was a perfect fit as well. Really fun movie, too!

tag427 best opening to a horror film EVER!
The opening credits really was done with perfection
Thanks for uploading this video!
this movie is amazing.
one of my most fav themes/Introes by far
Such a great film. Every Halloween this is a must watch
OH MON, MY all time favorite horror film recreated. I thought it was a remastered art. Now I realized it's a true worthy horror motion picture that is worth the watch

A little trivia here: The bird thing that appears at the end (right behind the director credit) is the monster of Ravenna, who happens to be one of the first monsters that went viral in medieval Europe, thanks to bestiaries and gossip.
I don't know why people shit on this movie. Even to today I find it one of the scariest gd movies ever
Definitely captures the amusement park theme of being about to enter the haunted house. Very fitting

Lol. When I was a kid, that weird rararararara sound at 2:18 always creeped the hell out of me.
This movie gave me nightmare when i was 9 years old. i'm 23 now, and this still so scary.
Where the F*** were your parents at this moment !?
I showed this to a friend. And he still hasn't talky about it 😮😊🎉
This song is amazing. I enjoy this organ instrument

Let's say better than most of today. The Conjuring / Anabelle franchise beats Haunted Hill.
+Norman Roscher not really. The Conjuring franchise wasn't scary at all. This film gave me fucking nightmares.

Gives off a 1930s scary look to it
I will admit the film is what it is, but the opening is brilliant
Good stuff, Dark Castle crew. Good stuff.
El intro fue lo mas aterrador que vi en mi vida cuando tenia 8 años.
My all time favorite horror theme 🖤☠️
The intro was more scary than the film itself.
Despite how...flawed the 1999 movie is, this opening credit is so good
I am sure Hans Zimmer copied this when he wrote the soundtrack for Interstellar.
Holy shit haha
Still my favorite horror movie of all time
I am truly hoping for a 25th anniversary re release this year!
Very good horror movie
Definitely one of my favorites ones with The Event Horizon
Yes!!! Event Horizon is one of my faves also along side this one

Find the title music scarier than the film.
The whole movie feels like a NIN/Marilyn Manson music video, and I love it.
The only movie I got nightmares after watching opening sequence
Saw and House on haunted hill should be a great crossover film the key is find a baphomet statue to win $7,000,000 and X mark the spot live or die make your choice

This is the only positive thing of this remake: the creepy atmosphere, and scary opening... everything else is a letdown.
It's better than The Haunting remake though, only just ;)
Sr Franz Kool how can you say that.....the original had a regular residential house this has a freaking psyche ward in the basement!!
finaltransconfigurat and you know what's even more crazy, below the basement, there's a god damn fucking baphomet idol. Talking about... holy shit!

Does anyone knows n can teach me how to edit something like this??
Whats with the baby doll head that shows up during the sequence, there was like NOTHING in the movie that showed anything like that. and why's the opening filled with x-rays and pictures of the human body?
some people find mannequins and baby dolls creepy. toy's in general can be disturbing. it just depends on what there in.
Well the house in this version of the film is meant to be an old insane asylum, the human body pictures were probably for medical use as for the dolls they might have had children guests at one point so dolls seemed to be the way to go.
