      I work for an ISP and take bill payments. I shit you not, I look out for every account that has Netflix/Disney Plus/Apple Music and make sure to let the customer know that they are paying for it. 9/10 times they had NOO clue that they were paying for it. Iv helped dozens of people cancel their stupid subscriptions. I have literally seen agents sell someone a new phone. And in the contract since they might not speak good english, they will slip in a subscription service and people will end up paying monthly for 2 subscriptions to the same service. Fuck anyone who allows this to happen. I know its not much but at least I can feel good at the end of the day knowing I fucked over a big corporation by undoing their sneaky backhanded shit.

    See i think if you'd unsubscribe to a service and not realise you're unsubscribed, it's a good thing that they're no longer paying for that service, it sucks for a super minority of people who care about streaks but not about watching the actual content, and if someone purely cares about giving money to people online they could donate or subscribe to a higher tier, but for most people its good that they are no longer paying for something they dont use, that's something YOUR OWN SPONSOR advocates for

    • @LazyAssShit
      @LazyAssShit 18 днів тому

      While I do agree for the most part, I think the issue is more on how it is due to a fuckup that involuntarily affects people (unlike RM that prompts you to potentially make that choice yourself) and the fact that subs are a mostly predictable/stable cashflow for a lot of streamers who do it as a main livelihood, meaning that this now leaves those affected in an odd spot where a chunk of their predicted paycheck may have been unexpectedly cut out of nowhere more than couldve been originally anticipated/properly budgeted for which, for all intents and purposes regardless of the benefits you stated for the unconcerned casual consumer, is pretty unfair on their end.

    • @18SuperSam
      @18SuperSam 18 днів тому +20

      I think that’s a little unfair. If you want to support a streamer you like, you should be able to do it in whatever way is most convenient to you. If you only have so much disposable income but want to support, lowest tier is perfectly fine. I don’t see why you need to be an active viewer to do so. It’s bad design to make a subscription that asks you “are you sure you want this?” That kind of thing should be up to the user, third parties like rocket money, or the government to deal with.

    Naturally, when people forget about a service but still pay for it, its really good for the business, but not so good for the consumer. So when the business messes up like this. It benefits some of the fans. Its really good, and theyre doing what they can, they dont have to pay 1 month bonus. It feels alot like "im losing out on money because people arent resubbing to my service. Pay me more" which if any company acted like this would be met with "why do you have so much corporate greed"

Twitch may have saved the everyday layman who works a 9 to 5 from losing money every month on a dead sub without having to pay for a Rockey Money service to do it for them. Active subs will re-sub, and there wasn't much more Twitch really could do. I am confused, Xsolla fucked up but this is somehow Twitch's fault? If people were unsubbed due to a glitch I dont think it would be legal for twitch to just resub everyone and continue to take payments when they cannot 100% gurarantee the glitch was the cause, there is a small chance people may have just cancelled their subs around the same time. Now even though this was an Xsolla fuck up I think twitch giving streamers 1 months payout for any sub lost during this time is a fair compromise, it gives a full month to hopefully let people know they may need to resub. If they are a long time viewer/subscriber they will most likely catch on, just put out reminders during streams. If they no longer watch then its probably not a bad thing for the viewer who may have forgotton they are still subbed and continued to pay despite not watching anymore, how many of these longtime subscribers are only 'longtime' due to forgotton subscriptions?
    Hopefully streamers manage to get the word out and regain the majority of the lost subs though!! Just my 2 cents on the matter, I will go back to the shadows now.
    TLDR: Twitch didnt fuck up Xsolla did. IMO Twitch is doing the best they can, even going as far as just giving streamers money. Most loyal subs will resubscribe quickly.

    It’s a balls up for sure but what exactly do you expect Twitch to do about it? You actually pointed out that they can’t unilateral restart a subscription. That would probably be credit card fraud against the subscriber. Edit: and how can you lack the self awareness to run this sponsor and not realise in this context streamers are the subscription people have forgotten they have?

  • @LantanaLiz

    No one's talking about it because charging for dead subscriptions is already heavily discouraged in Europe and the rest of the world. Microsoft will automatically cancel Game Pass subs if it's not being used as well. Twitch is following the same rules (shockingly) that other companies are to avoid lawsuits for customers being charged over services they don't use. This video was poorly researched and no one's talking about because it's something government consumer agencies recommend.

      This situation is only possible *because* Twitch is still behaving in a predatory way and letting subscriptions continue indefinitely even if they're unused. Twitch didn't do what you're saying they did.
      The payment provider is who cancelled the subscriptions, not Twitch. Twitch legally can't reactivate it without the user's consent. This has nothing to do with Twitch cancelling unused subs like your Microsoft example. If this issue didn't occur, Twitch could have continued to leech off of them.

Like you said, they can't auto resubscribe people, even ignoring how that would be an EXTREMELY shady, predatory thing to do, it could open them up to a lawsuit. And let's be honest here, saying that streamers may lose money going forward is extremely disingenuous. If Twitch's plan goes correctly, people that want to resub will resub, and people that forgot they were subbed for a long time will now no longer be victims of a system that is kinda predatory to begin with. Hell, the sponsor of THIS VIDEO is built on stopping people draining their bank accounts through poor management of subscriptions. If this is truly going to be a long term problem you have to consider whether the majority of these people are long term subs that are financially sound and aware of how much they're spending, or they're people who have no idea, or would be better off not paying for this. I'm not sure what the breakdown is there, but no one else can know for sure either. So all in all this seems like the perfect response from Twitch.

    Lud kind of a bad take this time. Twitch is paying out the money that is owed. Yes people will not regain all of the lost subs, but you have to understand technological errors occur all the time - to even the biggest of tech companies. It is not within their power (for good reason reason) to re-instate a payment subscription without authorization from the purchaser. So in my opinion they handled this best way they could, and in the long run the people who your sponsor advocates for are benefitting for the good. Twitch streamers are not entitled to their viewers money at all unless they gave them something actually worth 5 dollars the free viewers don’t get, it’s just tip culture online.

Obviously I and many others can't make every stream, but it sounds like streamers and viewers have 1 month to tell people they might be unsubbed or find out they are unsubbed (either by seeing their twitch emotes gone or seeing 50 ads before their favorite streamer) and resubscribe. If they don't resub by then, either they'll resub when they get back into the streamer's content (sucks for them I guess) or they stopped watching them altogether and this basically saved them a few dollars a month. I'm sure a ton of viewers are in that boat of forgotten subs, but I still don't see this as that big of a bad thing, especially of the creator is still able to rake in viewers.
    If you're falling off I can see this being a real issue for your income, but I don't know how else to say it other than it's probably a good sign you need to change things up to get more people interested or back into your content.

    Thanks, Mr. Mogul Mail! I used rocket money and they told me that I was subbed to a bunch of twitch channels, cancelled immediately. You've saved me a lot of money, boss!

    incredible seeing you side with the classic "my grandma is still subscribed to AOL" strategy of money siphoning. I don't understand how indefinite recurring subscriptions is legal without further user input. thankfully twitch made the right decision of not automatically auto renewing once again

    If a sub doesn't notice that his subscription got cancelled, he probably wasn't watching the streamer and possibly even forgot about it and would have unsubbed if he remembered. I don't think it's good to profit off of people who just never thought to cancel their subscriptions, and the people who do still watch the stream can just resubscribe. It's a moral grey area at best, anticonsumer and predatory at worst.

    I think ultimately this shouldn't matter at all. As someone pointed out in the comments already, if someone is an active watcher of a streamer, or the streamer makes good enough content to subscribe to, then people will resubscribe. This video comes across as though streamers are preying on the viewers who subscribe to a streamer, stop watching them (or stop watching twitch frequently in general) and then forget that they're paying 5 bucks a month to the streamer. I understand that the sponsor of the video counteracts that message, but that doesnt change the message you've conveyed in the video.

    The thumbnail was so clickbaity too. I thought twitch themselves would remove subscriptions altogether.

    Twitch takes alot of Ls but i dont think their response is one. Giving people one month to resub is more than fair.

    How is it a scam when nobody is profiting? Twitch, the streamers, and the payment partner are all losing money. Only winner is those who didn’t realize they’ve been subbed this long and will choose to not renew lol
    Crazy sponsor for this one huh

    I feel like twitch have done basically all they (legally) can do? A month payout for streamers effected, notifying every person who got unsubscribed and encouraging them to resubscribe, as they can't do that for them and creating a bonus incentive to get people to continue their streaks rather than giving up. Within the 400-500 max number of people that have been unsubscribed in the example, you would hope majority of them tune in enough to notice their benefits have gone and they have 8 ads when they click on the stream. Those who don't notice, weren't watching and if that's majority effected, then your channel has a lot of dead subs? Idk it's a fuckup for sure, but glitches can fuck things up to a level where they can't get back to where they were and you have to find ways around it. It might even have to come to the streamers personally reporting the losses and going after Xsolla themselves. Idk I'm a Twitch noob tho, just my two cents from a viewer.

    I understand the tier sub thing is annoying (though I don’t fully understand the system). However, I think most people (and I mean most) aren’t just gonna have a sub going in the background. I understand that it’s revenue loss for the streamers. I just feel like if you’re acknowledging that having all those people resubbing is unrealistic, you should also acknowledge that all those people knowing their subbed is also unrealistic. Which is where I think the whole argument of them resubbing them automatically argument falls flat. Plus I think there’s laws around it. I appreciate the informative videos you do! This is just more of a critique.

    Bro if they want to resub they will resub. They dont need to keep getting money from people that dont even know they are supporting a streamer

    Really the issue is the streamers missing out on peoples subs that don't even realize they are subbed or not? Twitch said they would fix the sub streaks as if nothing happened.
    Honestly biggest issue is people stay subbed when they don't even watch for a month and large streamers crying about that fact.
    Based move.

    No one is talking about it because these aren’t real problems. People are barely making ends meet. We don’t care about streamers missing out on their weird parasocial cope bucks for a month.
