@@RandomVidsforthought Why Virginians Fight in the Civil War, as stated by Stephen Lang portraying Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson before First Manassas in a motivational speech to his famous Stonewall Brigade, in the movie Gods and Generals. “Men of the Valley, citizen soldiers, I am here at the order of General Robert E Lee, commander of all Virginia forces. On April 15 of this year of our Lord, 1861, Simon Cameron, the Secretary of War of the United States, sent a telegram to our Governor John Letcher directing him to raise three regiments of infantry to be sent to assist in suppressing the Southern Confederacy. Governor Letcher’s answer is well known to you but perhaps not his words. His wire to Washington stated: “You have chosen to inaugurate civil war. Having done so, we will meet you in a spirit as determined as the Lincoln administration has exhibited towards the South.” A few days later, the Virginia legislature voted for secession. Just as we would not send any of our soldiers to march in other states and tyrannize other people! So will we never allow the armies of others to march in our state and tyrannize our people! Like many of you, indeed most of you, I’ve always been a Union man. It is not with joy or with a light heart that many of us have welcomed secession. Had our neighbors to the North practiced a less bellicose form of persuasion perhaps this day might not have come. But that day has been thrust upon us, like it was thrust upon our ancestors! The Lincoln administration required us to raise three regiments. Tell them we have done so!” Robert E Lee’s Great Decision: Lee is considered by all at the time to be America’s greatest soldier and the tactical and strategic genius behind America’s victory in Mexico under Winfield Scott. Union General in Chief Winfield Scott, a fellow Virginian, wants Lee to command the Union Army. April 18, 1861: President Lincoln, through Postmaster General Montgomery Blair, offers Colonel Robert E Lee overall command of the Union Army. Lee is faced with the most difficult decision of his life. He believes in the Union and is against secession. He has served in the US Army for 30 years. Lee also believes slavery is a “moral and political evil.” However, his home, Virginia seceded just the day before. Lee will pace in his parlor in Arlington all night. Lee will decline the command and resign from the US Army on April 20, 1861, stating: “I cannot raise my hand against my birthplace, my home, my children. Save in defense of my native state, I never desire again to draw my sword.” Lee also stated directly to Mr. Blair, “If I owned the four million slaves, I would cheerfully sacrifice them to the preservation of the Union, but to lift my hand against my own State and people is impossible.”

Liberty or Death 1776 Carry me back to Virginia by string band Old crow medicine show is actually an anti-war song mocking the services of those who fought against the tyranny of Lincoln and the Union.
creeks N rivers So Crow isn't mocking the services of Confederate soldiers? I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything as a matter of fact I'm huge OCMS fan but I know on the political side they tend to be on the left.
yea, they are on the left politically, but Ketch was born and raised in Virginia, in the Shenandoah Valley along the Shenandoah River, just like the soldier in the song, and so understands the complexity of the era - its a song about a confederate soldier set to the outline of the state song of Virginia "carry me back" - i dont think its trying to preach or mock anything, close to non-political, if such a thing is still possible
This makes me miss working at Cumberland Caverns even more. Wish I could have taken it to where I moved. Loved seeing the bands play there every month. Old Crow was my favorite. I git to hang out with them and they are some pretty nice guys. :-)
oh my word.the old crow medicine show sure cures what ails you.i'm a old kentucky ridge runner.if you follow the the old buffalo trail you will find yorself int covington,ky you will be on the pike turnpike.trust me.there is sign that tells you so.hee hee hee
Who is the incompetent fool that's not promoting this group? Old Crow Medicine Show is not only a very talented band, but they're fun to watch. I've never seen a bad (or medium) performance by this group.
Love OCMS,and I really love how they play Anti-War songs like this song,Levi, I hear them all,and others. Makes me believe that not EVERYONE out in the country just bow down when some fancy-pants politician waves a flag in their faces. That ain't Freedom; that's obedience. If I could I'd OUTLAW political parties. They just exist to divide and conquer We the People.
Read the lyrics, please. Despite the upbeat and triumphant sound of the song, it is darkly ironic and deeply critical and condemnatory of the Confederate army from a CSA soldier's viewpoint. Yes, indeed, the CSA soldier eventually does get "carried back to Virginia." Carried back, dismembered and eventually dead in the treasonous War of the Rebellion.
Seriously,,People playing Bongo drums, and bands with No Banjo player,(ah,this is Not Bluegrass) its BlueJazz. JD Crowe,Del McCoury,The Seldom Scene and Alison Krauss, now they're Bluegrass Musicians. These guys and gals are all good Musicians,(but a Banjo being played with a flat pick),That's just Not Bluegrass,Sorry.
Can we just stop and respect the fact he is singing, dancing AND playing some BLAZING fiddle backup, and solos.
That stuff is HARD!!!
If you're not playing the fiddle like that are you really fiddlin?

Making bluegrass a little more hip. I still don't understand the difference between country and bluegrass.
