  • Taking out the new 1965 Peterbilt 351. Please, don't laugh too hard. Dad grinds the gears a bit. We are still getting used to shifting the 5 and 4 transmission. Thanks for watching!
What are your thoughts? Restore or leave it be? I'm leaning towards keeping it original.

Dave McNaughton Actually the driver here, (I'm assuming your Dad), did a pretty good job of shifting & clutching. Excellent really given this was his first time to drive it. There are always supertruckers giving their so called "expert" opinion, most of whom couldn't even get this truck moving. As a veteran driver who cut his teeth on twin sticks I can tell you they were temperamental at best. (We didn't call them grind-o-matics for nothing!) I'll bet he drives it like a pro now and would enjoy seeing a video of him shifting through the gears now that he's more used to it. Thanks for sharing your historic truck with us.

That NT855 335 is one of my favorite engines ever. Its sound gives me goosebumps. Best regards from Germany

Abrams Pelenkahu: The green stick is the main transmission (5 forward gears plus the reverse gear). The red stick is the auxiliary transmission (4 gears, to be used in combination with the main transmission). For every shift on the main, you can split it 4 times. Hence, a 5X4 arrangement, or 20 forwards "gears".

Thanks for the information! We are all but tapped out of old truck funds right now, especially after getting the Pete 351.

I love seeing trucks like this in original condition, and only fixing what you have to. Restored ones are cool, but I personally like original better.

The 8V-71 Detroit in this rig would be 392 HP with about 2,100 RPM's.

I don't think the 8V-71 is a comparison to the 318 because the 318 is a V8 and the 8V-71 is a Inline. Both are Two Stroke Diesel Engines and I have a 318 in my 1972 Peterbilt 352 and 8V-71 in my 1978 Peterbilt 359,they're not the same engine.
