I do not weld. But we are buying a grinder, to do some work on an old house. Old gas and water lines to cut out. Old support poles, need rust cleaned and repainted, and many other things. I was completely lost at what disks to buy! I have watched a few different videos p. Yours was the best, BY FAR! Straight to the point. Short and sweet. Yet gave more clear, concise information, rpthan all the others combined! I subbed. Although, I am not a welder. Lol but I am VERY GRATEFUL for your video! Great job!
I've been really enjoying chugging through a lot of your content.. it's great to see how you've found your voice here and have been educating so many folk. Where are you based, may we ask?
Thank you for the video, especially about the recessed disc part! I was wondering how I would remove a welded piece and you helped superbly! Plus, thanks for leaving the link for the disc also!... Big help.
Nice video Tim - short, to the point, simple. As one of the other commenters says, safety seems to be a big thing with these. How about a short video showing you using one of these tools in the correct way ? Stance, clothing, how much pressure to apply, clamping the work, etc. Like you I have a table saw and like you I'm very wary of it. Practising respect for power tools, taking them seriously, helps you both enjoy using them, and live longer. A demo from you would be cool. Thanks !
Love welding don’t love how hot it is. I built flat beds in a hot shop. Watching and learning what the puddle of metal is the important part knowing what it’s asking for and practice and adjusting your welder and keeping it going with nozel mig grease. Ive learned all kids of welders wire stick mig tig oxy acetylene was easy to learn and the welds on and it’s fun, it burns with a very bright flame.
Thanks for that Tim. You mention that you have a bandsaw. A video on calibrating, maintaining and using a bandsaw would be great. It’s very hard to find decent documentation on bandsaws online, they seem to be less common than chopsaws, so a video from yourself would be really useful !
just came across your channel and watch this very first video of yours....i just instantly slam my fist down on my desk, shook my head, and screamed "where the hell have you been my whole life?" there could literally not have been a better time for me to see your greater video, very well explained, perefctly understood by a newbie like me. so thank you sir. oh yea! and you better believe i slammed on that like and subscribe so quick.... keep the amazing content coming man, looking forward to it
I picked up one of those diamond wheels when I bought a new grinder recently. (Thought I had lost the flange piece, and the new grinder is 9A trigger instead of 5A slide switch so not a total waste even though I found the missing piece 🤦) Tried it on the edge of my practice sheet, and wow it feels safer than the normal cutoff "death disks". I've had a ton of their little siblings on the Dremel explode dramatically, so the big ones on the grinder get me on edge.
Would you recommend the wire brush attachments to remove caulk from a car? Or would the wire brush attachments get gunked up by the caulk? I don't care if the car gets scratched, I plan to sand it and paint it afterwards.
Very useful review, just bought a second grinder, keeping one with a diamond blade for tiles, brick etc,and one for metal in my motorcycle workshop to save changing blades and the brick one gets very dusty.
Great content! Didn't know that depressed cut off wheels for cutting more flush to the surface exist! Quick question, can you sometime give the diablo diamond grit for GLASS? (Even though its totally impractical, just for the heck of being possible) Ive seen diamond grit coated drill hole saws used for glass (and some miniature diamond cut off wheels in dremels) and the idea just popped into my head
Which one should I use to remove the corrosion rust on the 2000 Toyota Tundra frame, twist wire cup, or twist wire wheel? How many do I need to finish one job (Guesstimate)?
Hi Tim! Thanks for your video. I just bought an angle grinder to wear down some material that a guy glopped on to a damaged boat. Way too much material, just slopped on. I just watched a different video by the Ace Hardware guy and in the comments, a number of people said they had lost fingers, toes, and one nearly cut an artery near his hip. They were not kidding. If I do everything the way I am supposed to, how nervous should I be about using this tool? I‘m concerned right now, and I am not normally a nervous person. Thank you.
Thanks for watching and for the question. As with any tool, there is some amount of risk. That being said, I have no reservations about using one as long as the guards are in place, I have good footing and grip on the tool, I’m wearing safety glasses, I’m using the right disk for the job, the tool and disk are not damaged, and the disk is rated for a higher speed than the grinder runs. I have spent hundreds of hours using one and have not had an issue. The tool that makes me most nervous is a tablesaw. I still use one regularly because I respect the tool and learned how to use one safely. Good luck with your project!
@@TimWelds , thank you so kindly! I will rewatch your excellent video and be super-careful to follow all instructions. Appreciate your time and efforts.
till now nobody explained what purpose those centre depressed wheels serve, you did, I wish you could explain about more disc types and the correct way to use them.for e.g concrete cutting discs have slots some are continous , why .? could you explain.
Hello Tim,I need something to get dried splatters of concrete off a concrete pool floor.I been using a quick attach drill with a wire brush but it is a pain and takes too long.I do have a angle grinder.
Hey Tim, Does disc attachment may affect the angle grinder which causes the machine to vibrate? When I try to attach a wire cup brush and a wood carving disc to my angle grinder, it vibrates a lot. And I can't hold the grinder firmly.
I’m currently grinding diamond discs on a terrazzo floor and I’m bumping up against a lip I can’t get over. Can you recommend a hand held tool that is hook n loop that can hold a 4 inch disc ?
I’m curious about something. Sometimes friction welding is used to join two metal parts. So if you made a high friction disk for an angle grinder, could you weld one edge of sheet metal to another? There would probably need to be a little overlap.
Just a regular cutoff wheel, using the outside edge on the head of the rivet. I've done it that way many times. I think a chain breaker might be better, but I've always used a cutoff wheel.
As long as the arbor is the same size, the disc is rated for higher speed than the grinder runs and you have the proper guard that fits with that size wheel installed, it’s possible. I wouldn’t generally recommend it, though.
I tried to screw on a cup wheel and there was no room to put the securing nut at the end. Does the first piece that goes on need to come off. Im new at this haha.
Hi, I have some screws I want to grind down in a table top I'm renovating. I've cut the screws as far down as I can with an angle grinder now I just need to level them and stop them being sharp. Is there a disc I can use for this please? Basically I'm looking to "sand down a sawn off metal screw."
Sounds like an awesome project! I've taken old vehicle chassis' to a sandblaster and they grit blasted it for a few bucks. It's just some guy I found online with a massive diesel compressor under a carport in a random field. You might look for someone in your area who does that. If you want to do it with an angle grinder, the best thing I've used are 3M bristle discs. They're expensive, but they work great. amzn.to/3uekffQ Be sure to wear a respirator...who knows what's in that paint.
It can be used for this, however, it will be difficult to keep the table top flat because only part of the wheel touches at a time. A random orbital sander would keep it flatter.
Thank you so much for this comment! I have been using these for 20 years and didn’t know about the different types of guards available for these little grinders. I just researched this and and placed an order for the proper one for cutoff wheels. I’ll also put a note in the description to help others out too. I learn something new every day.
Neither will be ideal for polishing, but you can get a nice uniform 'engine turned' style appearance with a fine grit flap disk. Polishing will require multiple stages of sanding and buffing.
That's what I thought when I first saw them, but this one's for metal. It has lasted really well, but it cuts a little slower and is louder than the regular black ones. www.diablotools.com/products/DDD045DIA101F
Great question. I buy the “twisted wire” brushes, which typically have a speed rating of 12,500 RPM. If you search Amazon or Google for twisted wire cup brush, you’ll find several. I’ve also used the Harbor Freight ones, which work pretty good. www.harborfreight.com/3-inch-twisted-wire-cup-brush-47927.html
Thanks for watching and for posting a question. If you are able to, I would try to use a dedicated sander, because it will be hard to keep the wood flat with an angle grinder. If you do decide to try it with a grinder, you could use a flap disk or you can buy a backing plate and sandpaper that is made for an angle grinder.
You can learn to weld. I'll show you exactly what to do in my affordable online welding courses at courses.timwelds.com.

Glad it was helpful!
Showing how to remove the discs and fit the more elaborate grinding wheels would have been nice.

Thank you for the video, especially about the recessed disc part! I was wondering how I would remove a welded piece and you helped superbly! Plus, thanks for leaving the link for the disc also!... Big help.
Remember to check rpm of brush or disk. Some small grinders exceed the wire brush max rpm, causing it to disintegrate -hazardous!
Who cares
Great video didn’t know what grinder to buy but now I do 🙏🏻
I just bought my 1st angle grinder. I plan to learn how to weld as well. I’ll be subscribing and watching your welding videos.

I like those twisted radial wire brushes. For recesses in parts i like to also have brass brushes on an common handheld drill.
Appreciate this video. Im looking to buy an angle grinder for some automotive work.
I'm thinking of getting a angle grinder. Does it scrape off paint on wood , window sills ?

what about mill scale on a large piece before painting?
Great vid!
Good info. Thanks.
What angle grinder do you recommend? I was thinking of Metabo, but they ain’t cheap :/
Lowe’s has the corded Metabo 4 1/2” on sale for $40 or the Porter Cable brand for $30.
Really helpful! Thanks!
I tried to screw on a cup wheel and there was no room to put the securing nut at the end. Does the first piece that goes on need to come off. Im new at this haha.
Most cup wheels don’t actually need a nut, but I can’t say whether the spacer is needed without seeing your exact setup.
Nice video, but I was looking for a comparison between different amps rating of different grinders vs what they can actually cut in "useful time" :-)
I can't find any info anywhere on how to mount a wire wheel on a grinder.
Nice Video, Thank you.
