I LOVE THIS SONG BY JOAN BAEZ. I OWNED THREE 1954 TYPE 2 VW MICROBUS DELUXE VANS OVER A FORTY-YEAR PERIOD, AND ONE 1954 KOMBI LIKE THIS ONE. THESE WERE COMMONLY CALLED BARN-DOOR VANS , BECAUSE THE ORIGINAL ENGINE COMPARTMENT DOOR HINGED AT THE BELT-LINE AND WAS MORE THAN TWICE THE SIZE OF ALL VW BUSS ENGINE COMPARTMENTS AFTER 1954). MINE WAS GREEN TOO. THIS ONE REMINDS ME OF IT.
I stopped collecting VW's when it got to be a doctors game. That was 20 years ago. I sold my 64' camper to pay for my divorce & never looked back. Certainly love the VW's as much as I can love any object. They have a place in automotive history,art,engineering,war,peace,and practical daily living. Maybe it's just as well that the rich end up with the good ones, but it just goes against what the VW stood for. Life goes on, long live the classic VW. This 51' is certainly worth saving more than 67'
The one in the video appears to be modified because this model in the original video does not have the direction arrows on the front, it is the column arrow, or the famous little banana
Perfect music for this! Joan Baez! WTG! That took balls to undertake a Project of that magnitude! You are Saving a true Classic! Keep us updated! PLEASE!
Nice find Voll! Thought the T1 was the bug?? Music apt :) 'It's Not Impossible' by TJ would also slot! A great project - hope your handy Dude + have massive time.
Man, what sort of question is this? Get it on the road, it doesn't matter what it's taken! Who dares wins, Who doesn't dare doesn't understand. Just look at it as the journey before The Journey! Mubbsi :)
I know, thats what I'm doing with the 66 I just got, its jacked up on jackman wheels and is kinda an offroad thing, we have to get the 1500 running and a master cylinder, and a front floor pan and dog legs. TThen it should be road worthy, then I'll do a little offroading. After a while of that the resto can begin on the body. But you didn't see the rust holes in the nose? Thats a $500 dollar item at the least, and underneath is probably GONE!
I own a vw....bus, Im not rich. Its not vw's fault they made a bus that turned into an iconic vehicle. They are still simple, easy to work on vehicles. Dont understand the doctors game statement. Any collecting of vehicles is expensive. If you think vws are expensive, then maybe you shouldnt have bought your first vw. Average vw restored is 20 grand. There are numerous vehicles that sold for more brand new than a fully restored vw bus. I think you just stopped collecting because money.
I'm young and dumb and I don't even want to touch this one!! WAY WAY WAY too much work for me, or any one man to do! I don't care if its a 51, rare, and a barn door, extra rare! I know when to look away... I'd be crying, but I know my hands, and my wallet could not bare the burden of putting this thing back in running condition, let alone a complete resto on the body, frame, engine, pans its too far gone, I'm sorry... get mad if you want but that's my opinion.
I do know one thing this bus was restored. Disagree with the probably frame rotted. Rust never is the same on all vehicles. For one, they picked it up with a fork truck. They wouldnt have done that if the frame was gone. Front wheel well frame looked ok. Way worse than this truck has been made to drive again. Plus, once you really get in the vw community, there are deals, connections ect. Used parts. Many a bus has been put back on the road by nos or used parts. 500 bucks for a nose.
Dude, who cares? The buses are getting rare, the early bugs are rare, obviously they are going to go up in price... Its not like buying an old Ferrari, jeese. That is a doctors game, this is just a bunch of guys who remember they had a 23 window and want to buy the nicest one at any cost, because they are dumb... VWs will never be a game of the SUPER rich, Peter Mullin isn't going to collect them, Jay Leno might, but he likes all cars so, yeah.

Do you have more pictures of your project?
you dont have to totally restore it to drive it. There is just make it functional and driveable.
Ok I thought this bus was restored and painted. Thought the orange and gray bus was the finished product but not so as I spy different engine lids.
t1=bus 1st generation split window
t2=bus 2nd generation bay window
At least there is no rust!!!
