Your expedition finally stands at the heart of the ancient temple. But as you study the inscriptions in the darkness, two wisps of green smoke burst forth. The walls begin to shake. The giant sandglass begins flowing with less than an hour before it empties, and a rumbling tells you that you don’t want to be around when that happens. Can you use math to escape the temple? Another solution would be to agree that the group which finds the exit just walks out, then the rest can see which path no one came back from since he said "the curse ONLY affects their communication" therefore not their movement

My dad came up with another solution: As there are 9 of us in total, 3 go into each door (you also go into one with other 2 poeple) and the last door you can know through the process of elimination.

This won't work though.
The cursed students may lie only sometimes, so we have no idea whether they are lying or telling the truth at any given time. If only one student of either trio is arguing with the other two, does this mean that:
a) he is cursed and is lying, while the other two students from the trio are telling the truth (and the other cursed is in a different group) OR,
b) he is not cursed, is telling the truth and the other two from the same trio are the cursed, paired together and lying?
It would be impossible to determine and we would have two doors to eliminate, which means our chance of survival would be 50 / 50. (Which is easily solved if we pair together the two students from our own trio and we go alone.)

I guess there is an easier way:
As the curse only affects the communication the lead the leader can split the group in 2,3,3 and ask them to find the exit. And tell them that the group which finds the exit has to make 1 person stay at the exit and the rest should come back. In this way the group which has the missing person has found the correct exit.

that was also my solution. Discard one of the doors, make 3 groups of 3 persons, if any of the groups finds the correct one they should go and wait outside as a signal. If all of them return, they should all take the fourth tunnel.

Yeah but then two students might suicide by not coming back. Or two might come back from different tunnels. Not coming back when it isn't the exit or coming back when it is would be the equivalent of lying. So as long as u go one two three three, this would work, but two students might die.
This riddle needs a sequel about the other expedition!

There's another solution. If you just tell the group to NOT come back if they find the exit (regardless of how you split it up), you could just notice who never came back when you return and go down their path. This works because you said the possessed members only have their "communication" hampered, their actual actions (Like, leaving the cave), are supposedly kept in tact.
My thought process is that the two liars actions are not influenced by the curse, only their "communication". I am trying to override this issue by turning an action into an inadvertent communication.
but image there is a trap in only of the tunnels and they die or something? this way is guaranteed
Cucas 360 I don't think the way mentioned in the video is guaranteed if there is a trap in one of the tunnels. I don't think that variable was accounted for. Maybe I'm wrong.

+Cucas 360 In fact, now that I think about it, the method in the video does NOT work if there is a trap in one of the paths. The criteria for solving this riddle was "ensure you ALL escape". If there's a trap and any of them dies, then not everyone escapes.

I was thinking that you can have everyone go their seperate ways but they MUST bring something from the outside of they made it outside, and it must be exclusive to only outside, so when we meet up, if one person from a group has something from the outside then I know that they aren't cursed. But if a group has none they found the altar.

I was thinking like what if you split into three and then tell them that if they find the exit, don't go back. So if 2 groups go back, we know that the path the other group took was the exit. And then if all groups go back, then the path you all didnt take is the exit.

You could also divide all groups into 3, including the trio you're in, and leave 1 path unexplored. This would create the same concept of answering with confidence for the students. If none of the explored paths show up as the exit, you know it's the unexplored path.

One other thing you could do is just tell each group “If you find the exit don’t come back.” If the curse only affects communication it wouldn’t force the possessed to come back in and then everyone just takes the path that did not have a returning group (as long as you keep track of who went where). While there is a risk that something could happen to keep multiple groups from returning, that could still happen in any scenario anyway so the risk is not much different.
Communication can be non verbal, so would include things like that

The problem is that your other group members won't trust you to go explore alone.
If you don't mention the curse, it won't be a problem. Just assume the role of leader, split the groups of people into 3 and 2, and send them off, telling them to report back whether it is the exit or not. Of course, it's no guarantee, but people in a panic tend to divert responsibility to somebody else in dangerous situations (To avoid the risk of it being their fault if anyone dies), especially if there is someone willing to be a leader.

You are the only one who knows of the curse. The 2 guys who were infected would have no idea about the curse. Only communication is affected by green gas. Not that they are possessed and want every one to die in there.So they have no reason not to trust you going alone.

here's my answer:
as you know you're not cursed, you stay in the middle and you don't move. As the curse only affects your communication and not what you do, you tell everyone that if they find the exit, they leave. You divide the groups into 3, 3 and 2 and wait for all the groups to come back and you go down the path that the group which didn't return went down. This way everyone is saved
Would the rest of the students trust you that you aren't cursed though? All they knew is that you could lie to them and lead them all to a dead end.

I was stuck for really long in the wrong approach of sending 0 students on one path, hoping to somehow get good enough of a ratio of truth-tellers in the other paths. Eventually it dawned on me that when I've sent 4 or 5 students to one path, splitting the remaining ones in the other two paths in any way is equivalent to sending all of them too on another single path, you cannot determine which of the two ways to go when there are 2 possessed among them. That completely ruled out sending 4 or 5 on a single path, making 3 the viable maximum per path.

the Problem with testing 3 doors is you Need 3 sure "truths" (true sayings about a passage). if there´s a disagreement in just one of the gr.of 3 you never know if there´s 2 liars or just 1. i´ve tried such poss. too, but you Need 3 sure truths in any way wich leaves you at Groups of three or five and above and yourself for any door you wanna check if you wanna afford the possibility of a lie. Going with the others still gives you a poss of a lie only checking 3 doors wich leaves you at at best 2 sure truths with the System ( you might fall on 3 sure truths in a given case but the System doesn´t assure you of that)

3. Explore for 20 minutes

Unless I'm mistaken, you don't even need to know that YOU aren't cursed. You can split into 3 groups of 3, and travel down 3 paths, leaving one untravelled. When you get back, you should be able to deduce the correct path regardless of which group (or 2 groups) the cursed people are in.

Couldn't you just tell the people who find the exit to escape? Then when you all came back the people who didn't come back would let you know that they escaped and that that's the right path.
But if the liars were the ones who found the exit they could come back and say they didn't find the exit
they only lie when communicating, therefore they wouldn't come back.
But if everyone else said they didnt then you can know they are the two cursed ones because you know you aren't currsed
What if those two cursed students got paired together and came back saying they didn't find the exit. Or one of them was cursed and lying and the other one was telling the truth but u wouldn't know! Then u would have wasted time and probably none of you would make it out. Just my thought but that was pretty clever though😋

If the possessed might lie or not, one of them should not lie. In this case, if they are in separate groups, only one group would argue. This gives the impression that both of them are in the same group.
It's explained. It doesn't matter since a non-arguing group always tells the truth, except for the group of 2 if both possessed, but then all other groups will not argue since no one possessed and you can ignore the pair.
Would assigning an action to each path work? You could have a thumbs up or down depending on the tunnel. It said it only effects things verbally so it might work.

I was thinking you could just send 3 groups of 3 down three of the unknown paths. Tell the students that if they find the exit, just go out and don't come back. If when you arrive back in the center all or part of a group is missing..the path they took is the exit. If everyone is present, the unexplored path is the exit.

But what if a trio IS arguing? Do you trust the two that are agreeing? They could be the two cursed people and be lying. So can you trust the one going against the other two? No, because they could also be possessed and lying. You have no way of knowing.

Yeah this was the solution i thought of too. If the liars are split 0, 1, 1, then the two people in agreement are telling the truth. And if the liars are split 0, 0, 2, there will be 2 groups in agreement, and that means that the group with 1 person in disagreement is telling the truth.

ion ion you have to be within a group or you won't be trusted. There are four options and nine people, so yes, one tunnel is unexplored, and if a group has two liers that return, the thirs in group leaves and that tells everyone there's the exit.
I would just look in the tunnel and see if there is an exit for each one
I’ve seen a couple saying that you should follow the path of whichever group doesn’t return, but reasonably you can’t be sure if the group didn’t return because they found the exit, or because they died.
If you tell each group to leave just one student outside if they find the exit, you can immediately tell which way to go (and that it is safe) even IF the liar is in that group.
Even if the liar claims one person in the group is missing because they died, the absence of anyone missing from any other groups proves that is a lie.
The only way you’d have trouble is if someone from another group really does die, and the liars are able to manipulate the rest of the group into heading down an unsafe path… but this is all adding another element into a riddle which doesn’t really need that.
You’re supposed to assume no one dies that’s why he included the thing bout none of the cursed attacking or killing anyone but I don’t know much
What if there is no exit and the liar decides to stay back? The truthful guy has to return but the majority won't believe him.
I think there are three solutions to this problem. The first, obviously, is above, but I think there are two more:
1) Split into three groups of three and try three of the four paths. Tell them if they find an exit, go ahead and escape. If everyone returns, the exit must be path no one checked. Since three people are in each group, at least one person would escape if he found an exit, regardless of who he's paired with. If fewer than 9 people return, you know one of the explored paths is the exit. You can safely take the path fewer than 3 people returned on. If three are missing, all three were not cursed. If two are missing, then one was cursed and decided to to return to deceive the others, and you can ignore his testimony. If only one is missing, the two that returned are cursed, and you can ignore their testimony.
2) Split into three groups of three and try three of the four paths. When everyone returns, if there are two disagreements, then the cursed individuals are in two different groups and you can side with the majority in every case. If the majority of one group found an exit, take that path If the the majority in all three groups failed to find an exit, take the unexplored path. If there is only one disagreement, then both cursed individuals are in the same group, and you should side with the minority. If either one of the two consensus groups or the one minority found an exit, take that path. If they didn't, take the unexplored path.
Edit: I acknowledge the fault in my second solution below.
Scott Simmons 1) if only one returns you can't know whether the other two are telling the truth. So if they say, it's the wrong path, they could either be lying and the third one escaped or they are telling the truth and the third one is cursed.

Julia Hörmayer Sure, I don't know if they're telling the truth, but I don't need to know. I know that one didn't return, and that shows that this path is the exit. If it weren't the exit, then all three would return. He says that the curse only affects their communication--that is, they would lie. It does seem that the problem assumes that they would do as they're told.
However, if we allow that the cursed ones may hide to trick the others and deceive them, then I think we're still okay. If one returns and says "There's no exit on this path the other two are hiding," then if true, everyone else who returned would agree with the others in their respective groups, and we could safely identify the two who didn't return as cursed. If two return and say, "There's no exit on this path, the third is hiding," then if true, there would be at most one disagreement, and the truth tellers would be in the majority. In effect, that altered scenario 1 becomes almost identical to my scenario 2. The difference would be there are two ways to deceive--either by returning and lying or hiding.

Since it's possible one cursed person might decide to tell the truth, if there is only one disagreement, it could be that both cursed people are in the same group, or it could be that one cursed one is in that group and the other is telling the truth in a different group. If that's the case, then we would need to side with the majority, even if there's only one disagreement. I think I may need to retract my second solution. If there's only one disagreement, I'm not sure you could determine what the truth is, since only 3 of the 4 options were explored.
But, wait. What if the ones who find the exit simply don't come back? Then you wouldn't have to worry about lying, because only those who returned didn't find the exit.

This method doesn't work because returning or not returning is a form of communication, and hence could be "lied" about. If you think communication only affect speech lying than let me ask you this. Why not have one person go down each path (left overs just chill out in the center and rest) and then return. If you have found the exit simply raise your hand. Then only one person raises there hand and presto, you are free. Is this acceptable? I don't think so.
A simple solution is just to tell the group to each take some grass from outside and bring it back
According to the setup, the leader (you) can also be infected with the smoke. You should split into groups of 3, and leave one path unexplored. There are only two possible outcomes when the groups return. In Scenario 1 there is conflict in only one group, which means that both liars must be in that group, and the correct path is either a) the one they took (if the two liars are saying it's the wrong path) or b) the unexplored path (if the two liars are saying the path they took is the right path). In Scenario 2 there is conflict in two groups, which means there is one liar in each group of three, and the majority will be correct.

There seem to be an awful lot of people asking what happens if both possessed students are in a trio and both lie. If that's the case then that trio will give an inconsistent answer, so that will account for at least one of the possessed students, meaning that both other groups will have at least one student that isn't possessed and will therefore tell the truth, and as those groups' answers will be consistent you therefore know that they're telling the truth

Basically, if one trio argues but others are consistent, both cursed would be in the trio.
If only one cursed was in the trio, another group would argue, in which case you can just trust the majority.

Tommy Thai You need to realize that cursed ones don't have to lie. So if both cursed ones are in same group, and lets say they found way out and come back to save others. 1 cursed choose to talk true and 1 choose to lie, so ther's 2 telling that "we found way out" and 1 is arguing. If you automaticly think that 2 must be lying because you they are arguing, you end up believing the 1 guy who was telling lies in a first place. So going into 3x3 groups wont work because you can't be sure if one group is lying or telling truth, and you got that unknown path too left.
Everyone go in a trio into the three paths. If all three don't agree then go in the passage no one went into yet and all leave together

Say we used your method, what if both liars went into one trio, none of the trios found the exit, which is a 25% chance, but both liars said they'd found the exit? The two trios consisting of truthful people would say they hadn't found it, so you'd follow the trio where the majority said they had, and you'd go down their path and find a dead end. We're looking for a solution that works 100% of the time, and yours is not it.

Yes, me too, this would work because even if both cursed are in the group of 4, it doesn´t matter the disagreement because you know that the other two groups are indeed telling the truth, so you do not the information of the group of 4. I think this solution also works but I am not 100% certain
Unfortunately this solution does not work. (It was my original guess nonetheless). It only works if the 4 group is split (either 3/1 or 2/2) .. but if it’s NOT split (all of them tell the truth) it could be because all are not contaminated (this is one possibility) therefore the two contaminated ones could be either both in 3 group or one in the 3 group and one in the 1 group. Either way, if the 3 group is split 2/1 you don’t know for sure if there are two honest answers or two dishonest answers (because there could be 2 contaminated or one contaminate in 3 group) therefore you can’t resolve for the 3 group. As for the group of 1 this is useless (in this case) since the one can be contaminated or not and you can’t tell which one they are and if they are honest. So in such scenario you can only solve for 1 out of 3 (2 out of 4, including the first one).
