Donnie Thompson and Mark Bell conclude their conversation about various topics, including his career highlights...and some words of wisdom from friends.
Fairly sure I watched this video for the first time around November of ‘13 had two torn rotator cuffs and was in pain 24/7. None of the light weights at the pt clinic had helped and felt like I had no other options. Saw this video and realized that I had nothing to lose. Started strength training the rest is history, shoulders have been pain free for almost a decade now. Video probably saved my life. Miss these old super training days.
People insulting the big dude. He was 400 pounds here, and yeah he was strong but wasn't in good shape. So? His life, not yours. He's not forcing you to do what he does.
He was in good shape at his peak. See his kettlebell workout. Powerlifters arent marathon runners. Dont see distance runners age well do you. Dont see them cutting around like dorian yates or arnie or stallone. Because muscle matters
Why should I? I was demonstrating that a fool should not say something to come off as a smart ass unless he can do it correctly. Didn't your parents care enough to teach you not to make fun of others?
And since he is a PT (I've noticed a lot of Chiro's are the same way) and a powerlifter, he's been around folks with these injuries and seen the alternative therapies. If he hadn't, like most people, he likely would've taken the doc's advice to have surgery as well. Louie Simmons (powerlifter) has broken his back twice (before he learned how to train) and never had surgery. They have interesting therapy.
Yeah, you're right. Maybe he is just adamant about not having surgery, because it is the last thing that he would want to do. For me. it was absolutely necessary. I've had two fusions, and before I finally had them, I was limited so much; in activity, that my metabolism plummeted. I think that it all depends upon how serious the herniation's are; to what extent the nerve impingement is, scar tissue, pain thresholds.. It can get so bad that surgery is a desperate, but sound option.
@jimmcd1234 Yeah i did think that was the case, thanks alot for your reply. It was great though the time he was with you. look forward to your future videos!
That's what powerlifting is... Nobody gives a shit about anything you do except yourself. But who cares? It's the greatest sport of all time no matter what
+bbrock RailFan For the record, I'm 51 and have been training for 36 solid years non-stop. You have no idea the stuff I've seen and done since long before you were in diapers and well before your waist blew past 40 inches. You were about as wrong with your comments as you could be.
Calling someone who had to have back surgery an idiot.. lol Maybe he'll be humbled by a few herniated discs.. and not be able to even put the weight of a coat on his back..
No you wouldn't, if you were 400 lbs you wouldn't be able to squat 1200. Also if you were to throw on a squat suit you still wouldn't be able to squat 1200.
Kelly Starrett trusts him and actually borrowed a number of approaches for using bands for mobility from him. If you think you are a better judge of who can help than Kelly Starrett, you're not.
Yeah these guys that are so heavy they just sit and wheeze and grunt need to get a clue. I was a physical therapist assistant for years and can relate about the workers comp stuff, I competed for 15 years too so I always had a bit of a conflict about how unproductive the therapeutic exercises were to build any kind of strength, but overloading the lower spine with heavy squats after a surgery is just stupidity, you will injure the segments above and below the fusion, if not the fusion itself.

What a great conversation!
I've picked-up a lot of good tips from watching videos that Donnie has put out. Very knowledgeable guy. Seems really good natured, too.
Two of my favorite lifters ever. I could listen to them swap stories all day.
I like this guy. :)
You should do more of these. I enjoyed these a bunch!
I love how he is out of breath just talking lol......
Just sitting on a bench and talking seems to tax the limits of his physical condition. The downside of hyperspecialization ...
tren lol
Donnie is a class act. Such a nice guy....
Some wisdom and some laughs. Fun to watch. Damn he's big!
doonie seems like a great guy
I miss these old days :(

He’s thinner now
wheres his neck
Where is the apostrophe between the second E in "where" and the S that came right after it?
just shut up bro
Why should I? I was demonstrating that a fool should not say something to come off as a smart ass unless he can do it correctly. Didn't your parents care enough to teach you not to make fun of others?
Under his traps lol
Who needs one when you can squat that much ? 😂
I really miss this kind of content on Mark Bell channel...
lmao 1:08

Donnie is a great representative for the sport.
Thank you for the good video, thumbs up.
Donnie Thompson talks and feels himself up.

what are the Powerlifting totals? best out of the three different lifts?
1:15 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hell YA Donnie!
@jimmcd1234 Yeah i did think that was the case, thanks alot for your reply. It was great though the time he was with you. look forward to your future videos!
Holy shit. His breathing is even intense!
how do they recover a herniated disc
Yes. A few months later.
Look at Juan in the back ground at 1:00. That's the reason I wish I could train at ST. Nothing wrong with having fun while you train.
11 years later and a lot has changed about this relationship...
Not just this one. I think I remember a change with in a year or two, tbh.
Most of the bigger guys.... have this zen about them. So damn different from what people and the media tries to portray them as.
I'm only in 20s and beginning to mistrust many more farts than I used to
We meet again, tyciol. - Seiji
you must have got that purple action going down there bud.
Is Donnie no longer training at ST?
If you're so good raw then do it!
no need to fool
So you are a PT?
Seems like a cool dude! Wish he would drop the gear cause he's clearly strong as shit to move that weight.
2300+(unsure of the actually total but it's just over 2300) is a raw best all time total and was just recently done by Stan
gotta love fat mark
Smelly*
LOL juan and the woman flirting
he's the strongest lifter in the world
He has the same voice as KAZ
im sure they would start with light squats and work their way up as they feel comfortable.
Badass
Donnie sounds like Bill Kazmier
I can't unread this I can't unhear this
He did herniate his back. He mentions it at 2:47.
That's what powerlifting is... Nobody gives a shit about anything you do except yourself. But who cares? It's the greatest sport of all time no matter what
working on it
how can he do this with a herniated back ;o ? I mean the disk is fucked .. not gonna go back in place so how can he continue
yes for exsample your dead are 800 squat 900 and bench 650 your total is 2350
Squat master!
Looks a little like Bam Bam Bigelow...
I always thought 2300 was the best total/ or was that raw by don reinhoudt
Are you aware that Donnie is a PT? (Not an assistant, FYI, an actual PT)
Never trust a fart and never waste a hardon
Dude can't sit on a bench and talk without running out of breath. Who cares if you can squat 1000 if you can't breath and look uncomfortable.
+bbrock RailFan For the record, I'm 51 and have been training for 36 solid years non-stop. You have no idea the stuff I've seen and done since long before you were in diapers and well before your waist blew past 40 inches. You were about as wrong with your comments as you could be.
+sb5591 sb Who says he is doing it for other people?
sb5591 sb Who cares if you can't breath and look umconfortable, if you can squat 1000 lbs.
Calling someone who had to have back surgery an idiot.. lol Maybe he'll be humbled by a few herniated discs.. and not be able to even put the weight of a coat on his back..

You should learn more about physical limitations and mental limitations.. You know just enough to make you a danger to your students!!!
why is the dude breathing so hard just talking
He was 400 around the time of the video
I thought Donnie did get a 3000 total though... :p ???
if i was that big id squat 1200 duhhhh lol
or youd just be fat.... i never saw chris farley or john candy poundin squats like its goin out of style
No you wouldn't, if you were 400 lbs you wouldn't be able to squat 1200. Also if you were to throw on a squat suit you still wouldn't be able to squat 1200.
Powerlifters have very much Muscle look at his traps But very much fat whe are strong AND MUSCULAR
donnie is cute
He is sewwww outta breath. From sitting.
It sucks he got hurt
I would never trust a PT who weighs 400lbs, juices, and can't speak a sentence without gasping for air.
Kelly Starrett trusts him and actually borrowed a number of approaches for using bands for mobility from him. If you think you are a better judge of who can help than Kelly Starrett, you're not.
+Yoyosten99 lold
+Yoyosten99 That's like saying you would listen to a football coach that has all the stuff you named. Knowledge!
That's all physical, shallow
+Yoyosten99 knowledge is knowledge no matter what form it comes in.

hahaha
Look at the size of that dudes head. He's on roids for sure. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Because roids make your head big?
Yea. They make the bones of your skull grow.
SweetRelease123 lol apparently hahaha.
Neck Vein funny?...mmm nope.
