Basically the same as going home. If you watch the film you can understand why he wrote it . The quirky Scottish film “Local Hero” is a masterpiece . I smiled & chuckled every minute of it & of cause Mark’s Music was sublime
From the first time I ever heard this,I’ve felt it was the most evocative melody I’ll ever hear. I’ll ask my kids to have it played at my memorial service.it feels to me like a summation of my life’s journey-all of it, the good & the bad.”spiritual is a spot-on description of the gravitas this melody conveys to my mind.I’ve always treasured the coda in which he plucks several strings’ harmonics, voiced with his fretting hand. MK is a true “music magician” and a well-spring of melancholic melody. Long may he run.
Late reply, but mine three. On my list also. Everything about this version is perfect. It's like a God speaking to me. The best part is when Mark looks back at Guy/Alan (not sure) and smiles, like, yeah, perfect.
2:06 is when you can close your eyes and the mind starts flying like an albatros and you can almost see a sundown over the ocean projected onto the inner side of your eyelids. At least I do. Wonderful performance, maybe the best version of that solo I've ever heard.
This is the very best version of *Wild Theme* _Local Hero._ Somber, melancholic, haunting in its simplicity - less is so much more. This rendition truly captures the spirit of the original film and it’s not ruined by that intrusive and bloating sax on some of the other versions.
What IS it about that tune?! Its just incredible. Its like something you can't quite put your finger on. Like a memory you can't quite recollect. Really touches something deep inside me. Melancholic, nostalgic, comforting, maybe even 'spiritual', if you dont mind the term.
Mark Knopfler and David Gilmore....my 2 guitar hero’s ...no disrespect to all the other super talents ...but these two gentlemen can move my soul with their melodies and talents .....gracias
The bending at 3:42 nails it! It transforms an already superb song and a genious performance into pure magic! My absolute favourite version of this unique masterpiece!
The best contemporary music piece for guitar. Emotional, poignant, evocative and imaginative. You can close your eyes and Mark take you away....... Absolute masterpiece.
Still remember wearing out the tape of my VHS version of On The Night in the 90's from watching over and over, just trying yo get those two magical final chords and the harmonic at the end right..... :)
Played this song incessantly on my walkman , travelling drunk on the underground after a bad breakup - feeling homesick for my Northumberland. It still gets me as I have been exiled for 30 years now
Sep 02 2006, me and my wife signed our wedding register with this song in the background, the first saturday of sping in New Zealand, my dads birthday, amazing music and I married the most beautiful woman alive, a perfect day in my books
I think he is amazing..... As beautiful as this song is, it is rather sad too... I watched a clip of him solo last year, and he still plays his red guitar (Among many others...) So lovely I hit reply half a dozen times.
Vielen, vielen herzlichen Dank Mark. Ich liebe dich!
This melody has been haunting our days for nearly four decades now. At times when it all went rough, this was a musical reminder that there would always be hope. Concealed among its notes was the promise that "home" would be reached one day.
I was so very lucky to have been able to attend this concert when I was in France. It’s just my opinion, but I think this is the very best rendition of Local Hero-Wild Theme!😂😅. A power ballad. Thank you.
Undeniably Marks very Best! A Magnificent composition & melody! A song for me, means a certain mood! If your 'up' enjoy the Chords! If your down, You'll cry a lot, because this will touch the sensitivity from the depths of your Heart & soul
All the more poignant given that this was probably one of the last times these two musicians played together - the tour ended 10 days later and Dire Straits disbanded some time after that
Yeah man. But that’s the comment was about the smile and of course I can be wrong but this is over all. They were just playing and the smile was an extra addition and let’s be honest it’s a rare from Mr Knopfler. However for me that was a good one 😉
It may sound strange but I have a list of songs that I want my wife to play at my service and this is on that list. Everyone knows that music is the most important part of my life and this song is one of the gifts that God has brought into my life. It's great that it meant something to you and your husband.
I don't think it's strange at all. For most of the people listening to "real" and good music it means a damn lot. Simply because it's not just some kind of sound (like pop or dubstep) but many notes and tones perfectly matched together to create a perfect sound. Listening and making music basically is my life, so I can expect to end it with that as well. I do have such a list as well... But since I won't be able to play them at my funeral unfortunatly, I want a good friend to play them live at least. It took me many years to create a list of only 3 songs (more than 3 seems too much to me), which I can really call "the list of the 3 songs with the most significant impact on my life". Pretty difficult, though. At the moment it is: Pink Floyd - High Hopes Dire Straits - Wild Theme Queen - Too Much Love Will Kill You (Metallica - Bleeding Me) - It hurts too much not putting it on the list.
Howay the lads !!!...All the Geordies out there this is are song....Newcastle is are home...and the team will rise and come back...gotta keep the faith RIP Bobby Robson....and those who might not see the team shine again...like i said..HOWAY THE LADS !!!!!!!!!
I am dreading hearing the news that our beloved Mark knopfler has passed away. I really shouldn't mention it at all but I will cry louder and longer than when eddie van halen passed. Mark knopflers playing touches me extremely deeply. When it comes to soulfullness he is the greatest of all time.
There are two very similar but nevertheless separate songs, both off the Local Hero soundtrack. The one we hear here is "Wild Theme." The second longer one that includes the saxophone is called "Going Home." They are frequently mixed up. Both are beautiful.
I imagine this was meant to be Going Home but they don't always have a saxophonist. With the Alchemy tour, they were very intentionally playing Going Home as their show closer - figure that's what they intended her as well.
No, it was a conscious decision not to play "Going Home", they never played it a single time on the OES tour, even though they had Chris White as a band member on the saxophone for the whole tour :)
I want to thank you for taking your time and explaining this. I happened to adore the former and like the latter. So when I was googling "Going Home" I was not getting what I really wanted to hear ("Wild Theme"), and now, thanks to you, I know why! All The Best!!
It was never the same with Mark . He always altered this and “ Going Home” every time I have heard them . I just received my Re mastered Vinyl copy of the Film soundtrack . It is just magic.
qu est ce qu elle est jolie, cette chanson, et comme ils l'ont bien jouée ce soir là!!!! wonderful song, wonderfully played that night great men, thanks so much for what you gave to the 70s and 80s generations.
It is a great music ever, and it will remain forever in my lifetime I'm listening this music since i was 13/14yrs and now i am 35 this music will remain forever ever in my memory i like it the most. It is one of my heart touching music, i can't express how deeply it use to touch my heart (i love this music very much) when i heard it. It reminded me my past.
Love it , man this guy can play the guitar always thought that since I was a kid listening to it in the back of my dads cortina and still think he’s the best now , what a legend !!!
Alltså det finns inte tillräckligt med ord för den mannen och hans sätt att spela på sin gittar alltså när han spelar är det hjärta och själ man hör älskar dig föraltid Mark ❤😊
I give all the credit to Mark, but I truly believe something greater moves through us. Many great writers say they pick up words/music out of the air. They hear or feel it. That's how I feel on this and several other songs.
Let’s face it we all get goose bumps listening to this... it’s absolutely beautiful
Yes...
Just hope someone can sell me a tardis. I'm lucky to have seen them live but yearn for one more chance......
I’m crying also…
Man life would be a terribly dull place without music.
Joshua Navarro well said
Particularly music of this quality.
I would be dead without music
The most beautiful song ever composed. Amazing guitar play and band.
3 people plays Mark and two keyboarder

It’s going to be played at mine too. Trying to find superlatives for this is hard, all I can say is every chord touches my soul.
Late reply, but mine three. On my list also. Everything about this version is perfect. It's like a God speaking to me. The best part is when Mark looks back at Guy/Alan (not sure) and smiles, like, yeah, perfect.
Yes!!! I feel the same way... and never have seen someone put it in words...
Thanks for putting that so well 👏👏. I couldn’t have put it any better myself.
….and me, Jonio 83yo
This is when you let the guitar sing, instead your voice. Pure glory.
Like many other legendary pieces of Mark Knopfler, this one is another masterpiece. Stunning 😊
2:06 is when you can close your eyes and the mind starts flying like an albatros and you can almost see a sundown over the ocean projected onto the inner side of your eyelids. At least I do. Wonderful performance, maybe the best version of that solo I've ever heard.

Exactly!
You Said everything !
Ruined? The sax of the original version? By Michael Breker? Please, don't say it anymore. Rip Michael Breker, one of the greatest.
I have the Sountrack of The film “ Going Home” on CD on record . It’s all the music in the film. It is just amazing to listen to.
Wild Theme never had a sax in it. Going Home, however, does.
What IS it about that tune?! Its just incredible. Its like something you can't quite put your finger on. Like a memory you can't quite recollect. Really touches something deep inside me. Melancholic, nostalgic, comforting, maybe even 'spiritual', if you dont mind the term.
Graham Dellow perfectly worded for a non geordie
I AM a Geordie! 😊 Newcastle born and raised
xD
i don't mind at all....
Nail head, meet hammer!
Mark Knopfler and David Gilmore....my 2 guitar hero’s ...no disrespect to all the other super talents ...but these two gentlemen can move my soul with their melodies and talents .....gracias
I feel you brother, grew up listening all kind of great musicians... but these two, they've started it all for me, and nothing will ever best them
100% with you on that
wish to heat Gilmour playing that song !
+1000 brother!!!
Those two gentlemen are my 2 undisputed nº1 guitar heroes, and will be forever...
Eric clapton sentimientos de películas tres dioses.... Irrepetible, me hacen vivir en sueño gracias
The bending at 3:42 nails it! It transforms an already superb song and a genious performance into pure magic! My absolute favourite version of this unique masterpiece!
Absolute perfection, Mark is the most sensitive and emotional guitar player ever, such a beautiful tone, full of melody and feel.
The best contemporary music piece for guitar. Emotional, poignant, evocative and imaginative. You can close your eyes and Mark take you away....... Absolute masterpiece.
Maravilloso
the best Version of " Wild Theme" , my absolut Nr 1 Hit ..
Still remember wearing out the tape of my VHS version of On The Night in the 90's from watching over and over, just trying yo get those two magical final chords and the harmonic at the end right..... :)
Wow, that so blew my mind. Stunningly beautiful piece of music. Can’t say enough how really gifted this man is.
Played this song incessantly on my walkman , travelling drunk on the underground after a bad breakup - feeling homesick for my Northumberland. It still gets me as I have been exiled for 30 years now
Who else is here enjoying it ?
Here Iam
Yo
Yup, still listening to one of the greatest, simplest compositions ever. This will play at my funeral.
❤
🇮🇹
This is my favourite version of this song. What great genious, only someone so trully special could have come up with this.
Great comment, my thoughts exactly
LO MISMO PIENSO..UNA OBRA MAESTRA QUE ME CONMUEVE

Music theme for my Daddy's funeral last week...His favorite song, a great song for a great Dad ever♡
Condolences, keep those memories safe.
He had great taste.may he rip.
Simply the best guitar player in the history of music . The touch and tone he creates is beyond genius.
This melody has been haunting our days for nearly four decades now. At times when it all went rough, this was a musical reminder that there would always be hope. Concealed among its notes was the promise that "home" would be reached one day.
Best electric guitar instrumental ballad of all time...
This entered my intire soul 🥲. And what a beautifull smile he gives To the other musician. Just melts my Heart.
Song for my lovely dad's funeral. He was "my local Hero" .
no words, simply amazing, and It is live, pre-digital
Perhaps the most beautiful rendition of one of my all-time favorite tunes.
I'm with you on this
J’ai 48 ans et ce morceau me bouleverse depuis mon adolescence…fragile et intense à la fois…il fera toujours écho au plus profond de moi.
Simply nothing is better than this.
One of the best guitar pieces ever recorded live
Mark a eu raison de ne pas mettre de paroles sur cette merveilleuse musique. Celà laisse a chacun de nous la latitude d'y poser librement des mots selon son état d'âme du moment et de les changer a souhait.

This is more than magic, this is touching heaven.
Imagine the whole gig filmed with this little camera on the guitar!!!!! 😮😮😮😮 would have been amazing!
Just stunning. My favourite guitar instrumental. Mark is a master of emotion.
chose this song 15 years ago to be played at my funeral
what a tune to look down from the otherside
going home how apt
just love it
So did they play it?
Undeniably Marks very Best! A Magnificent composition & melody! A song for me, means a certain mood! If your 'up' enjoy the Chords! If your down, You'll cry a lot, because this will touch the sensitivity from the depths of your Heart & soul

Un grand merci, c'est ma version préférée de cet air. Des années que j'attendais qu'elle soit mise en ligne... Un grand moment pour moi!
I give all the credit to Mark, but I truly believe something greater moves through us. Many great writers say they pick up words/music out of the air. They hear or feel it. That's how I feel on this and several other songs.
