FYI: The fence pickets I used were NOT pressure treated. Never use pressure treated wood for indoor projects.

A very important note! Many people don't realize that. I've seen tables and such things made from "reclaimed fencing" that were pressure treated. Cringe worthy.

Swat treated lumber uses certain toxic chemicals that are best left outside your home. Google knows more than I do, so for specifics I would look there. But that’s the basics of it

Joshua Bedford I just left a comment on a guys video who literally said “I figured after 15 years whatever chemicals on it are gone.”

Omg! I wish I knew that tool existed months ago when I removed hundreds of nails from wood. Cool looking shiplap and always awesome to see old stuff get new life!

If I had that fancy planer I could paint and nail fence boards to a wall too. Sheesh. These youtubers setting unrealistic expectations.
    ...
For real though, great project! A true reclaimed project thats simple enough for anyone to do. Yes [insert skeptic's name here], you can do a project like this with basic tools.

I think sanding them down with an orbital sander could work too.

Such a fantastic idea to repurpose your old fence, and the result is a really dramatic transformation!! I still say it isnt shiplap without the "lap", but hey, what do I know 🤣🤣. Whatever you call it, it's a showstopper!

Original Kilz is the best for creating the weathered look. There’s no sheen and it’s oil so you can sand more “worn areas” if you’re using it for a cabinet of other project.
    Great idea. Thank you.

Beginner DIY 😯 I think I could do most of it but cutting out the switch shapes would be where I'd probably fail, no jig saw here and no building skill, yours looked so good, very inspiring.

Wow! That’s awesome , I have probably made my project harder by pulling apart 320 boards of picket fence and didn’t know about the denailer!!! Live and learn ! Going to see about planing after I finish drying my boards from pressure washing🙄🙄🙄🤣🤣🤣🤣

I'm a few days late again this week, but really enjoyed this one Jonny. My parent's just bought a "rustic" cottage in NH that just has OSB for the walls and my brother and I were talking about doing something like this to clean it up, so I will definitely be coming back to this video at some point for some tips and tricks!

You're crushing it! By the way, most likely the building code for most folks may require electrical boxes to be set flush with the new wood wall. This can easily be done with box extenders for just a couple of bucks.

My local fencing company let's me have all their old wooden fencing from their work yard that they remove from their new installations for free. Saves them having to rehaul to landfill. Double bonus. Got to get one of those pneumatic hair removers.

Any bleed thru? Would bin also work diluted with denatured alcohol?

  • @edgarshoe

Do you still use the nail remover? I got one on Amazon but had to return it. It got stuck on the third nail I was trying to remove. I had a hard time getting it "unstuck". After that it stopped working altogether. Still hesitant about getting another one. Maybe I got a defective one.

I am getting a new shed and plant to recycle my old fence posts. I know not to use treated wood for an interior, but these pickets have been outside for 20 years, am I safe to use them?

    • @JonnyBuilds

I wouldn’t if it’s treated wood. Better to be safe. Old fencing is usually pretty easy to come by.

Shiplap? Whitewash? I don't think these words mean what you think they mean.
Add "look" to your title, and it won't be bullshit.
