Wear long sleeved natural fabric clothing as synthetic fabrics can build static electricity. A spark can ignite propane vapor. As stated in the video, do not store the propane cylinders inverted. The pressure relief valve is designed to vent small amounts of vapor if the tank is overheated. If it is inverted or on its side, it will vent large amounts of liquid propane.
@@AlanSanderson-u4t Synthetics can also melt on and into your skin creating a REALLY NASTY burn situation almost guaranteeing massive scarring and potential increase in likelihood of death if there is an accident. It is advised to wear all natural clothing (including shoes) when traveling in airplanes for a similar reason. One is more likely to be able to function and escape a air-crash fire when wearing natural fiber clothing/shoes than synthetics melting into your skin.
Thanks JR. I've been using the Flame King system for 5 years now, and it works flawlessly. The only thing I do differently is I keep a small digital scale right next to the set-up and weigh the refillable bottles to make sure I don't put much over 1 lb. in them, and I keep a clock next to the scale, because 10 minutes goes by pretty quick. I keep the bleeder valve pretty much full open, 1/4-1/2 turn, which allows me to fill up 4-5 bottles in the 10 minutes. Then I flip the 20 lb. bottle upright for about 15-30 minutes, and then do the other 4 or 5. Has saved me hundreds over the last 5 years
Absolutely love your vids. Not only are you very informative, you inject humor which makes your vids fun and educational. Please keep up the great work.
best tutorial I've seen. The only one that clearly states that propane WILL be released during this process (so always do it outdoors), and direction for opening and closing the bleeder valve.
You're welcome. It did take a little longer than I was expecting. I may need to turn the Allen wrench a little more the next time I refill them. I may not have opened the valve as much as I should have. Thanks for watching!
If you put the bottles in the freezer for a couple of hours it will fill a lot faster. Been refilling them for years . I also weigh them before and after to make sure I get a 1 lb. In them. Good video!
I stopped using the 1 pound cans altogether. Instead, I switched to a 1 gallon tank. It’s easy to refill at a fueling station, is light weight, and doesn’t have as much fuel as a 20 lb tank.
Get a propane tree (Coleman is one manufacturer) and a pair of propane hoses. Attach tree to 20lb tank, attach propane lantern to top connection, and use hoses to run to other propane appliances like a stove or heater. If you use propane devices in an enclosed space, purchase a propane gas alarm and CO2 detector like they have for RVs. They make handheld/portable ones too.
"Honkin?" I haven't heard that for a long, long time. I recommend weighing the small bottles before and after refilling so you know exactly how much propane was added.
Thanks for the update. I've been using just the brass adapter along with a kitchen scale to get it close. I don't do it too often, but this seems the way to go safely.
Thank you JR, very informative. I have collected several of the Flame King bottles over the past few years, mostly from people that want to get rid of them on media and recently eBay had a sale of 4 for $25. The system really helps keeping us warm or providing fuel to the portable cooking stoves during camping and power outages. Right now in my office Mr Buddy heater is being supplied by Flame King and power for the electronics and lighting by a power station. Thank you and have a wonderful new year
Very informative video J.R. And convincing ! I have a many 1lb containers but you have demonstrate that a 20 lbs container with a refill kit is way better. Thanks !!!
I definitely prefer the Fuel Keg system, no silly allen keys to lose...and their cylinder feels sturdier and definitely more durable. What I think the Fuel Keg people didn't do that great is their stand for the 20 lb cylinder, possibly to keep costs down and remain competitive,. That cylinder stand you show is definitely a way better alternative. Thank you much for the video.
One thing I never understood about the DOT rules for single use bottles: how would they be able to tell if the bottle has been refilled? Its not like there is any sort of indicator.
Don’t refill them too often. The walls of the green tanks are thin, and the valves are not meant to handle frequent refilling. Just go the safer route and buy yourself the refillable tanks:)
Those lanterns work pretty well on a big bottle if you use a distribution tree. It's just a pipe about 24 to 30 inches long with 2 ports on the stem and 1 on the top where the lantern fits nicely.
I was waiting for the Hank Hill impersonation, and you did a great job. Thanks for all the useful information you provide. I've been using the Fuel Keg refillable bottles and manifold and find that the stand is easier to use than the Flame King
Неплохим элементом безопасности при заправке баллонов было бы его взвешивание до заправки и после заправки, что бы не залить слишком много газа. (нужно знать какой вес газа вмещается в Ваш баллон).
Great video. Use of protective wear is essential. Freeze burns from escaping propane are a dangerously fast form of frostbite that is painful & slow-healing. Also recommend avoiding wearing static-producing synthetic material clothing (polyester jacket or gloves for example) or having anything capable of igniting loose vapor. Propane is heavier than air and can pool into lower spaces, creating hazards. Always check for valve & fitting leaks before, during, & after connections with soapy liquid, never an open flame.
Thank you JR. Always informative! My Dad had been a plumber many many years ago and I still have some of his refillable 1# propane bottles that were much heavier duty than the Coleman type we buy at Walmart. It's possible that plumbers supply houses may still sell that type of propane bottles, but I'm not sure.
I only use the disposable tanks 2 or 3 times because, eventually, the pressure relief valves start to leak. The best place to get replacements is a campground dumpster.
I am planning on investing in the Mr. Heater Fuel Keg in the near future. After wating about 15 video reviews including about 6 head to head comparison videos of the two refillable 1 lb systems, I believe the Fuel Keg is a better system overall. Keep up the good work.
I picked one of these up in the spring and really like it. One thing I do is actually turn off main vale then purge the little bit of propane out with the handle then do the disconnect. I felt if something didn’t close right I would know it before actually taking it off and having a bigger issue. Also my mom made me a bag that it all goes into when torn down and then sewn small pockets to hold the nuts and bolts in one pocket and another pocket sewn in for the Allen wrenches
I found a fire where a family was using a big tank to heat their home ...caught on fire dec of 1988 and I seen the mom and all 3 of her die.... I didn't sleep for months and hv never stopped thinking of them
There are a hard set of fire safety rules that, like firearm rules, only change if they are modified to even more conservative measures to prevent accidents. Ignoring serious guidelines almost always turns out badly. Any guy who works in the trades around trucks, equipment, tools and heavy materials will tell you it’s safety first. That being said mine are the black truck bungees. I was on a film set in 2001 when a Greensman list his eye. I will spare the details but he was using the bungees for an incorrect application and on his personal vehicle. Either way I won’t touch the things unless I’m wearing serious eye-pro
Just a thought, would it not be easier to put the fill valve on the 20 lb tank and THEN turn it over, so you don't have to reach in to screw it on? Love the videos, btw and am going to get that Mr Heater set up, as soon as I can. You are right, the ring and bleeder valve seem so much easier. Keep makng the videos and I will keep watching. You and Canadian Prepper are the best ones out there. You guys make everything so much easier to understand.
Hi Bill! The reason I did it that way was to avoid the possibility of damaging the adapter while positioning the tank. It wouldn’t take too much to bend it on accident. It would have been less awkward if I didn’t have to worry about the camera angle at the same time. Lol. Thanks for watching!
I used to refill the Colman 1 pounders until I left one outside during a cold night hot day and the gas inside expanded so much the tank took on an hour glass shape.
You might note that while filling the propane bottle, it is gas propane leaking out as the bottle fills with liquid propane. You can fill the bottle without this loss, but the fill rate is very slow once the bottle and tank pressures equalize. Very slow. For most people, not worth their time.
Not that difficult. If you are using brass caps in lieu of the rubber cap it came with you can pretty well guarantee it's been refilled. The same with wear and tear, rust, torn labels, bulging tanks indicative of overfill , etc.
Just a Note--it is Best to Refrigerate the Small Bottles for 30 minutes or more before Filling them, you can get more Liquid Propane in them by doing this...

NO. The big tank has to be up side down to get the liquid propane out. Else if up right you are just putting propane gas in the other tank equalizing the pressures.

They do make propane trees that allow you to connect multiple devices to a large cylinder with the lantern on top! Great for ⛺️ camping

Great video. Personally, I was looking at getting the fuel keg set up. I think either is well worth the initial investment in the long run.
Yeah, I may end up getting that one too. The refill adapter can be a little finicky with the Flame King.
I also use the one pound propane bottles as a torch

No need to freeze the small bottle😊
Use to be 225 for 2 bottles. Now 6 $$ for 2.
And you can not store them for a long time, and they are over eight dollars each at this time. Refilling saves money.
