  • I bought a 20 year old Hornby R316 LNER tank engine off ebay. Made in 1997/98 this loco is the newest engine I've bought to date (been out the hobby for over 40 years!). I was amazed at how quiet and smooth it runs so in this vid I take it apart to find out why it's so quiet.

I picked up one of these myself for an absolute bargain. Listed as for parts. I pulled it apart, cleaned and its works beautifully. Mine is really quiet too!

Very helpful and enjoyable video. Followed along with my 8473 - which I discovered was swimming in lubricant! Lovely little loco

The early J83 was built on the standard 0-6-0 chassis used on the Triang Jinty, GWR pannier tank and 3F 0-6-0 tender engine with z good old X03/4 motor. Early Triang chassis had a screw down the chimney that was soon changed to a body fixing screw at the front on the left side under the boiler/smokebox. There were two lugs at the back under the bunker which were part of the die cast chassis block. No bearings back then. After seeing an article in Railway Modeller in about 1978 I cut a slot down to the front axle to allow it to float - just like on this one! Maybe the guys at Hornby read the same article!!
My Jinties also have syncrosmoke units. The main drive gear and worm are both brass. In my experience no two engines of the period sound the same - even when they're identical! I've never found a satisfactory explanation for that. This is a seriously updated model compared to my J83. Though personally I prefer an X03/4

I have just bought the same engine off of eBay as well second-hand. Take a look at your centre axle you will discover a Groove in either will this is where your anti slip tiles would have been I'm lucky enough mine has still got them and they look in good condition it looks like they have been removed from your model this is why your rear axle is spring because the tyres make the diameter of the wheels slightly bigger so it looks like they put the springs in so the rear axle stays in contact with the rails this is what I think the rear spring axle is for lovely little whinging well place haven't taken mine a part yet but I will do it was handy to see see somebody else doing it first before I took it up.

Those small square motors are beautifully quiet. I have one in a Hornby GWR 0-4-2 chassis that got turned into a SR 0-4-4!

Tomorrow i am taking my J83s apart and giving them a service and now I know how it comes apart. You haven't lost your modelling skills as from I have seen your layout looks very nice. The J52 has the same motor and the spring rear axle. I have heard that people have sold their ones and bought the later model and the rear axle is not sprung, but I have no idea why. I do not have any baseboards yet, so I have been making models for the last two years and today i decided to service the models that I have bought in the last year or so.Good Luck and Happy Modelling. Very enjoyable video which reassured me I was doing things correctly. Might be worth you fitting new tyres to the centre drivers. Another well known you tuber recommends fitting Marklin tyres instead of Hornby. Just checked and he is Barrie Davies and he gives you the catalogue numbers if you are interested. Otherwise the Hornby ones are available. Anyway keep up good work on your great channel.

A year already. My, how time flies. I didn't know this sweet model existed so thank you for making me aware of it. During my eBay searches I noticed that it should have traction tyres on the centre wheels but it seems to run fine without them. Are you still running it without? I often wonder whey they bother to fit them.

Runs fine without them. I never realised it was supposed to have them till quite recently.

This is one of the last videos I've watched of yours Bill as I'm only just catching up with your older ones. Ive really enioyed them all! Why did you decide to move to working on towels? I'm also returning to the hobby after many years and figuring out what I need to get together.
Would be brilliant if you could do a video summary about all the different lubes that you now prefer, e.g. T Cut together with what they're used for. I have quite a few locos to check, lube or recommission!

Towels stop little bits and pieces rolling around or bouncing off into oblivion. They also soak up oil and cleaning fluids and can be washed a re-used many times. White ones also aid visibility so it's a good surface to work on. The downside is little bits of the model can get caught in them and break off so you need to be careful. Also loose fibers from them can cause issues but I've yet to find a better surface.

Really enjoy your videos. I have a couple of snippets from videos I made of my 0-6-0 and the DMU which you might be interested in seeing. Can you tell me how to send to you? Thanks

How do you remove the body from the Chassis? I can't figure out how to remove it because the running board is already cracked and I don't want it to shatter.
