    WHAT’S EHLERS-DANLOS SYNDROME?
The Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS) are a group of more than 13 genetic connective tissue disorders that affect the joints and ligaments, blood vessels, gastrointestinal tract, and autonomic nervous system, among others. The most common type of EDS is hypermobile EDS (hEDS), which used to be known at type III. Hi! EDS opera singer here, meaning I spend a lot of time thinking about the small muscles of the throat and mouth for a living. Thank you for this! I don't have TMJ dysfunction, but I grind my teeth like heck and do have to manage jaw tension while singing, so looking at some jaw tiktoks through a hypermobility lens is really useful! Lots of food for thought for me in this video - thank you!

Yessss singing is so hard on my jaw!! I went to LaGuardia for high school as a classical voice major so it was hard on my jaw back then. These helped a lot

@@IzzyKDNA Oh really?! I had no idea! I started my own channel recently to address disability and opera, but more specifically hypermobility in classical singers, because I don't know why but hypermobile singers are EVERYWHERE

That's such a cool channel idea!! Yeah there are so many people with hypermobility (something like 10-20% of the population is hypermobile), and given how important body positioning and posture are when singing, hypermobility can totally mess with that alignment, so im sure your channel will be super helpful to a lot of singers

I like how you encourage a full spectrum of managing pain. I'd like to
see a video on how chronic pain affects mental health. Seems like a full
spectrum approach vs complete pharmacologic reliance is the best
method. I have some chronic issues and have learned a lot from your

Braces cured my TMJ and migraines. Metal teeth braces, with rubber bands and I think some teeth removed, in the 1980s. What I call migraines are all-encompassing headaches, where no sound, light, smell, or movement is bearable and you beg in your mind for rescue or death. My TMJ pain & popping were there with every jaw movement. I haven't studied whether braces worked for others, since I have other current major health issues to study. I believe I have EDS and cervical instability. Best wishes to you all.

Love these videos. My jaw has been acting up a lot lately, constant internal conflict of do I go waste $ at the doc or not. Really appreciate seeing content that represents us accurately.
I just watched your vid the other side of chronic illness. Totally agree on all your points. I'd like to see stuff on how to ease tensions in relationships/how EDS affects relationships.
I have been having to hide my EDS symptoms from my in laws because they said they don't approve of me because of my eds plus heaps more hurtful comments. Its a tough gig.
Having these vids helps to keep us stronger together as a pack for sure. Mental health ++

I can't eat anything that requires chewing without something to drink anymore. I drink probably 2 glasses of water with most meals. It gets so tired and painful that when I don't have water I usually just don't eat. I've got an appointment with a new doctor so I'll bring it up then but I've had several dentists tell me that there's nothing wrong with my jaw

Tbh I immediately went to a TMJ specialist in middleschool because I was in a classical children’s choir, and opening my mouth to sing was super painful, and not being able to sing made me sad. I did a combination of some light laser treatment and an application on my teeth. Idk the science behind it but it helped. The cartilage in my jaw was super worn down, so I think it was supposed to function as a support for my jaw or something.
Also, a lot of retainers. So many. Still have one I still use, and the pain is noticeably much better, although it does hurt in cold weather, or when I super overuse it. When that happens I usually apply pressure under my jawline right where it curves, take Tylenol, or use a cold/heating pack.
Btw we saw an ENT first. He said “it’s TMJ, go to the sports store and buy a retainer to shape to your teeth.”
First night with the retainer I woke up at 3am in the worst pain I ever felt.
Sometimes the jaw pain is due to neck tension so I just crack my neck and it helps occasionally. And overextending my jaw does still cause a little bit of popping and cracking, and will probably be sore afterwards, but I can sing the way I want to now, and finding a good resonate spot in your mouth can be helpful as well.
It’s been a hot minute since middle school though, and I’m glad I’m not taking Tylenol every 4 hours every day anymore, so I don’t think about it too much.

If you do have tmj dysfunction (or whatever anyone calls it) you’d do yourself a favor to go to a dr who deals only with that.
Mine got so bad that I couldn’t hold my head up while riding in the car. So much of my neck pain was from my jaw!
Anyway, I wore an appliance in my mouth for over a year and had a small surgical procedure once during that time.
You wouldn’t believe how quickly the appliance helped my neck pain! It wouldn’t hurt to get it checked out by a specialist for TMJ.

Hi there, I have TMJ from parkinsons disease (so much fun lol) and I saw this video shared and wanted to correct a few things here because you deserve relief that wont hurt you! Honestly, a lot of these tiktokers are quacks. Sorry chiros, your field is based in pseudoscience and hurts people. The TMJ is the most complex joint in our bodies and I am so worried about how many people are doing things like cracking their jaws on tiktok, it is just scary because you can at best just get insufficient relief and at worse hurt yourself and cause permanent damage.
I have my TMJ treated by both botox injections into the masseter (10/10 recommend them for anyone who has tightness, mine comes from dystonia and dyskinesia, botox has been infintely helpful), and by a dentist who trained specifically in jaw dysfunction through Dr. Peter Dawson's institue, he is a leading jaw dentist and I cannoy recommend looking into his methods enough. It will give you a thousand times the relief any of this bs shared on tiktok will. You have to release the pterygoids. I do this weekly at least, it is the only thing that helps longterm. My dentist reshaped my teeth to act like a mouth guard essentially, they support my bite better which prevents the pterygoid from really clenching up, it isnt perfect but it is better than before. My jaw opened less than 10cm and slid to the side first. My ligament is shot, it no longer has any elasticity, so I have to essentially correct the damage it does by treating the muscles that overcompensate. After the treatment which i will say really hurts but works, having your pterygoid essentially massaged out until it relaxes out.
I hope you can get some relief, and to anyone reading this, please please look up the dawson method before listening to a chiropractor. Dentists who train in tmj are far more qualified to not destroy your already sore joints!

Hey Izzy! I was reading about cervical instability and how it frequently happens with people affected with EDS causing so many problems like POTS and Mast Cell Activation. I also read that Cervical instability can be treated by neck proliferation and patients after the treatment are seeing reverse in POTS and other problems. Can you do a video about this? I always believed that EDS may develop POTS for drastically different reasons than other people and what I read about cervical instability was interesting.

I always heard that the cause of POTS for EDS patients was that their blood vessels are over elastic. Scientifically this doesn't make sense bcz if this is true then our autonomous nervous system is fine, and shouldn't experience any other symptom except hear rate increase. The Cervical Instability problem makes more sense and it's mostly treatable. Check it out as many EDS patients are experiencing reverse in POTS and relates issues.

It feels like my jaw is in a vice 24/7 and goes from bad to worse (singing, chewing, laughing, during migraines...). When the guy came on pushing on one side, I immediately thought "Nope!" Then you said you can't do that one side at a time either. I've tried a lot of these, but never get ANY relief at all. I guess I have an extreme case. I used cbd from Bloom as well as other suppliers. I’ve yet to feel anything. Marijuana is legal here, so I tried a tincture of it. The first time it made me paranoid. Subsequent attempts to treat my pain failed. I’m wondering if I’m genetically destined to not be able to process cbd and MJ. I’d really like to know what genetic studies can help me find a worthwhile substance. I also have to have repeated numbing shots in order to have local surgeries but the shots are too weak or I don’t metabolize them properly-they wear off long before the surgery finishes. Please have mercy on those of us who have trouble finding pain relief because of our genes.
