      yeah for sure! stress and anxiety can cause you to grind your teeth at night which in turn causes the tmj. if my jaw gets locked up i then get really anxious about it because i don't want to have to go to the dentist etcetc but usually if i leave it and do the exercises (like the ones link talked about) then it does cease eventually. you just have to try and not panic.

    I developed TMJ even though I barely chew my food. It is from grinding my teeth at night/clenching my jaw, too much fluid in my sinuses, sleeping in positions where a lot of pressure is on my face, and most of all: compulsive mouth-biting. I constantly bite the skin inside my mouth, so my jaw has been overused from stretching. Been doing it since I was a toddler and don't know how to stop even though the pain becomes awful :'( Doctor gave me spray that helps get rid of the fluid, and that helps a little.

Now I have to wear braces since the splint changed my bite. I still get headaches but not as bad as before... Living with this disorder sucks. It sounds crazy, but lotion made from marijuana extract is an almost instant cure for TMJ (yay for legalization in Oregon). It won't solve the underlying problem, but it will release a tense jaw almost immediately.

      Hemp oil is marijuana oil. That's just the name they usually market it under. And lotion isn't the only thing they use it in. There's also hemp milk. I wanna say hemp is a strain of marijuana but I'm not sure

    • @zk2611
      @zk2611 8 років тому +3

      whammybar98 You're right about CBD, that's the needle in the haystack for sure. I was just making a generalization (THC=CBD) for the layman's understanding. They've got newish strains coming out of Israel that have a 70:1 ratio of CBD:THC, awesome for any chemo/cancer patients.

    I’m 16, and I’ve had tmj since I was 5. Mine is really bad, and my jaw has been locked for a year now. The pain is constant and unbearable, and I just wish it would go away! My dentist said that he was too afraid to try to deal with my tmj because he has never seen anyone with it this bad. Sadly, my insurance doesn’t cover the surgery that I need, so I’m going to have to stick with this for a while.

    • @hockeyhacker97
      @hockeyhacker97 9 років тому +2

      9sorem9 Definitely painful... my jaw doesn't lock closed, it will sometimes lock open (normally when yawning) which is a bit more scary because locked close you can still at least somewhat swallow so you can still at least drink, locked open there is no way to swallow even a tiny sip of water. I have never had to go to the doctor/hospital for it yet because I can generally hit it hard enough to get it closed after several minutes though I am sure if I yawned again and it locked open again shortly after I would have to actually go to the hospital for it because it hurts like hell for several hours after the first time it locks, I don't think I could get it back a second time.
      In either case (opened or closed) it hurts really bad and can be very scary even if it isn't uncommon for you, specially those times where it is worse then your norm.

    Lived with TMJD for about a year. Had to get a special retainer, and I went to the chiropractor regularly... I couldn't open my mouth farther than an inch or so, and it was -locked-. The doctors said not to try to pop it open cause I might damage something, so I just had to continue to relax it and massage it all the time. For a year, it was -awful-. Thankfully, after a while, it relaxed enough that I didn't even have to pop it open! It was so sore, and it still gives me a little trouble now and then, but at least it's a lot better.

    Im diagnosed with pretty severe TMJ disorder. My jaw locks, clicks and pops constantly (I can do it on request lol), my jaw has popped out, etc. Its pretty bad. I get chronic migraines from this. I get at least one migraine a day from my TMJ. I hate it. I almost had to do a major surgery on my jaw (take my lower jaw off and put it back together) but thank god I didn't do it because it turns out theres only 50% 50% chance of it healing that way! (Big surprise right?)

      It can usually be fixed with massage if you find a good therapist.

      I am a massage therapist, and I can tell you that massage can help. However, oftentimes, this disorder is caused by grinding your teeth, possibly in your sleep. In massage therapy, working on TMJ can be tricky because legally, working with TMJ starts to move into the area of dental issues, and a massage therapist can get into serious trouble for performing certain massage manipulations in certain places (such as in your mouth, which is the best place to massage to relieve TMJ disorder. Massage therapists generally can't do that because it is invasive). There are ways to perform self-care on yourself in order to help ease the symptoms of TMJ disorder. Either way, before going and getting help from a massage therapist, I would seek the help of a dentist. Bite guards are usually prescribed for these issues so that you can't grind your teeth in your sleep.
      Something is causing this problem, and rather than treating the symptoms (the pain and migraines), you should treat the cause (probably repetitive stress caused from grinding your teeth).

      Go to a sports store and pick up a gel mouth gaurd, the full coverage ones. Will keep your mouth slightly open at night and stop you from grinding your teeth

    • @BeeTeaDubs
      @BeeTeaDubs 10 років тому

      I appreciate your advice but for anyone with TMJ a mouthguard is NOT recommended. It will only make the problem worse. If anyone has problems with grinding their teeth to a severe level of wearing down the teeth (filing them down) then I would talk to a dentist about a mouth guard before using one. But otherwise, mouthguards only make TMJ problems much worse.

      Hello my jaw locked up when I woke up and I've found the easiest way to un lock it is to tilt your head to the opposite side the the strain hold it there for 6 seconds do this a few times and then do it once more without using you neck muscles just your hand to push your head down. With a little bit of movement your jaw should un lock. I hope this helps

    I got TMJ a few years ago. But it was from grinding my teeth, which I still do constantly because I'm OCD. But i went to my orthodontist and he wouldn't put braces on me until it was fixed. SoI went to my dentist and he told me that braces might cure the TMJ. So we told my orthodontist that we wanted braces anyway and I got them. I've had them over a year, and my TMJ is gone. but, like I said, I still grind my teeth. but that's a later kind if issue.

    Ugh yall do not understand the stuggle of waking up every. Single. Morning. With your jaw locked like u cant open it also... this is not tmj... tmj is a joint and in between the joint theres a little plate, sometimes that plate gets in the wrong position and it locks your jaw because its stuck there your muscle only Gets stiff because the stress... omg you do not want to force it open link!!! That could totally damage ur ligament permanently please do better research!!! Get that looked at link! Your ligament is probably damaged and thats why it still hurts a little bit!!!!

    If you have stared showing symptoms of TMD you need to treat it right away. I've had it for several years now and all my muscles are super tight on the affected side and as a result my eyelid is getting droopy. I can't breathe through my right nostril. I'm constantly trying to "pop" the pressure out. It's agonizing at times. It's not so much pain as discomfort to a maddening level.
    Don't be me. Get help ASAP.

      Scucci Mane droopy eyelid? Myasthenia Gravis maybe?

    • @Shinobi11San
      @Shinobi11San 7 років тому +1

      I doubt it. It may have more to do with Marcus Gunn Jaw Winking syndrome. Really my theory is the temporalis muscles along with all the other related facial muscles are pulling so tight it's making the eyelid slightly droop.
      Some days the droop is not as bad some days it's worse and it seems to correlate with how my TMD is doing on that particular day.

    I have to pop my jaw into place very time I wake up. Its is so annoying, I cant even take a nap without having this problem. Whats worse is that the type of TMJ I have is my jaw locks at about 1" open meaning my jaw could be dislocated. I would suggest seeing a dentist, I even have a meeting with a specialist and could need surgery. TMJ could be caused by stress, teeth grinding, overchewing (Gum can cause allot of problems), leaning on your jaw allot, sleeping on your face, yawning allot, essentially anything that can put stress on your jaw. Having this is one of the most frightening thing ever, I am constantly afraid of my jaw beginning to lock in public or if my jaw dislocates completely. It can also be very painful, whats more is that it is very annoying.

      The success of a sleeping position would really depend on the specifics of the person's TMD. If my jaw's acting up and I sleep on my back, my jaw kinda slips backwards in the joint and becomes so painful I can't sleep.

    TMD can be scary at times, especially when your jaw seizes up like that.
    And that 'pop' you get? Isn't the jawbone popping in and out. You have a disc in each TMJ (like the discs you have in your spine) which cushions the jaw joint, and the 'pop' is the disc itself sliding in/out of place. If it gets stuck in the wrong place (as mine has been for weeks now), you get a whole host of weird symptoms, including tinnitis, ears that feel clogged, pain in shoulder/arm/neck/across the face, electric shocks across the jawline, your teeth don't meet properly when you chew, and sometimes the jaw gets stuck shut or open.
    It's ain't fun, and although Link managed to cure it himself, I wouldn't recommend anyone else follow suit without first doing a bunch of research themselves and talking to a doctor. If the disc is out of place, you could damage the disc permanently (requiring surgery that has a 50/50 success rate).
