Hey Carl. I only own one leather jacket currently (a cheap one) but I would like to get another one. All the jackets I’ve tried on don’t really fit me in the arms and shoulders. Is there a brand or tailor you would recommend for bigger guys?? I have a 56” chest, broad shoulders and big arms.

I’m glad you mentioned secondhand. Like you said leather gets better with age. I got a nice leather jacket from goodwill that would’ve cost me $400 for $25 and it fits perfect. I got my motorcycle jacket for free from a someone I worked for who’s husband died 2 weeks into his retirement from the police force. Whenever somebody compliments me on it I get to say “thanks I got it off a dead cop.” And watch their reaction. Which is fun.

I ride motorcycles, and have found that bike jackets not only are functional from a safety standpoint but fit better than fashion jackets. I have long arms so bike jackets fit better since they tend to have longer sleeves to keep your arms covered when outstretched, plus the leather is thick to prevent wearing through if sliding on pavement. I bought a first manufacturing vendetta jacket. Fits well and has been wearing beautifully over the last couple of years I've had ut

Good video Carl. I like the way your channel is evolving. Good Better Best removes the snob factor in only showing the absolute top of the line. Some can afford that tier, but many of your viewers seem to be looking for great value at reasonable expense, or even lower expense. This series seems to be hitting all the nails on the head (an expression from when nails were still placed with a hammer). Good job!! Drink looks good too!

What I love about men's gear is that at least there is some logic (faulty or not) behind the price, you can actually list the reasons why something is very expensive and why some people pay for it. In women's bags for example you list all the reasons why a great bag is expensive and that gets you to $2k, and then there is another $10k on top because it says Hermes on it. It's much harder to sell that extra $10k to a man (not that it doesn't happen, but it has to be something very complex, like a car). AFAIC the best advice for looking great in a jacket is always the same: keep your body fat low.

@@oskarj7036 Rolex is different, for one simple reason: their prices have been going up consistently for many years. So, history says that it almost doesn't matter what you paid for your Rolex, you will get all of it back, if not more, when you sell it. Rolex is a commodity, as good as a strong currency, and in that sense it is actually a shrewd purchase. I know many guys don't think about it like that when they buy it, but that is actually the reason they pay such a high price for this brand, even if they don't know it: because the actual price on the market is set and supported by people who buy those watches for this reason. Remember, the price we pay for things has nothing to do with the cost or the quality, and everything to do with how much people are prepared to pay.

i am a lifelong aficionado of leather. I've been enthralled with it for 50 years. Studying the minute details that bring things up to the next level to luxury is my passion. I loved your video. In my leather business I had the opportunity to examine many things brought in for repair. You are right, the good level is fine and respectable. Full grain cow/steer leather has the same strength and long wear across the price range. It's the finishing and hide selection that makes the difference. Cutting to avoid blemishes in the hide means there is more waste on the hide, whereas leather with a lot of finish in it can hide scars and the pattern parts can be cut to use the most of a hide. Also, few hides are blemish free. When you get to the very top tier, apart from the fitting and custom made pattern for your size, or even flying to the workshop of a top maker for a fitting. I don't think 1 in a thousand people could tell the difference between a $1,000 jacket and a $5,000 jacket (unless it's some exotic leather like alligator or ostrich.
i will say that the Asian, off the rack jackets have gotten better and better over the years as they study and copy the style and technique of the top makers. I prefer to patronize the smaller craftsmen, but if it's above your price range, you can find good imported products. The topic is endless and there's always something to discover.

I 100% agree with quality for longevity, but i do think people should start at the cheapest leather they can find, including mall brands. Because you will need to experiment with cheap pieces to figure out your style, fit, leather preference, ideal brand, pricing, etc. Not to mention, if you want longevity for your clothes, then you definitely wana have a piece for every occasion, so in few words, get yourself some "daily beaters" and you won't even need to do much reaserch by the time you are ready to pull the trigger on a trophy piece, most likely you are already gona be gravitating towards a specific brand that checks every box for you

A friend had flashbacks from the past seeing that jacket. So I gave it to him. I also had an Avirex A2 jacket my cousin loved. I told him the story behind me getting it and that his mom was involved. I gave it to him because it had sentimental value. It's not about the cost of the jacket but the memories it holds.

Consider 1st. Purpose ! Wear like iron?= Horse, Bull or cowhides and I've found goat to be the best compromise of wear and still have a reasonably good drape. Leather has four basic grains or qualities from best to worst; full-grain, top-grain, genuine, and corrected-grain. Lambskin doesn't wear as well as cow, horse or goat but it drapes the best and is the most Hollywood looking. As always…. Fit is paramount

I recently bought a $900 leather racer jacket from Theory on clearance for $300ish. I had to spend that much just so I could get a jacket that didn’t have zippers and seams everywhere. That is something I noticed about these jackets. To get a “minimalist” style without all the extra crap means you’re going to drop lots of $$. Kinda sucks.

    • @WD.909
      @WD.909 2 роки тому

@@orangepeel1073 When a jacket has lots of seams and zippers and all of that additional stuff, it’s because the manufacturer is piecing together numerous pieces of leather. It’s cheaper than using fewer pieces of leather. The manufacturer uses those seams and zippers and stuff to “cover up” all of that and make it look intentional. Imo, it looks cheap. I know there are exceptions to this, BUT most high end leather jackets are pretty clean and minimalist. Means they’re simple. You don’t have zippers and pockets and seams all over the jacket. Look at Theory’s leather jackets for example, or any designer at Neiman Marcus. You probably won’t see a ton of leather jackets that have all sorts of detailing everywhere on the jacket. I know there are exceptions to that however.

When I finished my PPL I bought a WWII Government Issue A-2 Jacket from Cockpit. It was a bit stiff to start with, but has loosened in the past 5 years. While it’s not super high quality, it’s what I could afford at the time and still serves me well, even when flying. Now that I’m a bit farther down the road I could afford a higher end jacket, but would I actually wear it and not worry about it getting beat up? For me the answer is no, it would sit in a closet and wait for a “special”event or when I’m heading somewhere nice. I’d rather use the jacket and not worry about my investment. Now, I’m not knocking anyone with a higher end jacket, in fact I really like the high end bespoke pieces, but for me, they are not practical and more like works of art….

So what I am trying to say here is, that you definitely should also consider a used leather jacket. If you want a new one and spend hundreds of dollars for it, sure go for it, but those jackets are made to be used for a life time and 5-10 years of usage can reduce the price a lot while quality only drops a little bit

Aero horsehide must be the toughest clothing leather on the planet. As well as years of rough country wear, my jacket and jeans have survived welding and stubble burning, including on one occasion stomping knee high burning hay to prevent a fire reaching the barn. They have had dozens of cigarettes stubbed against them, both accidentally and on a few occasions deliberately when their were no ashtrays around. My shorts (cut off jeans) also quite literally saved my ass when I slid down a jagged slope while rock climbing.
Will you be wearing your jacket for rough wear as well as for fashion.?

Extremely lightweight however, i don't think are durable, they are for aesthetic wear since here in Mexico the leather industry has most people believing that the thinner and softer the leather, the better it is. Splitting, tanning, dying, treating is all part of getting a workable product from that unprocessed hide. From there it needs to be properly clicked to a pattern which fits and looks good (much more an art than a science), the cost of thread, hardware, lining, shipping. It all adds up, and you can skimp on some of those expenses but they may be in places that are obvious.

great points! I got scotch and soda jacket that was bit over 300e it is the best fitting jacket i ever had with cotton tread and beautiful cotton lining in egg color best i could afford. I was surprised how patina developed on leather because i didn't think it is a cheeper crome taned leather that has blue and green core. I thought it is analine chrome that would be callor through out but it is top layer only. Anyhow i continued to ware it with pride on fit and feel of it on the body and shure enough patina got much more developed and now it actually looks good. It is unusual look with green white color but i really feel proud on patina it developed. (i do care for it every half of the year with leather cream so it is not cracked ugly thing as maybe it seems from context). Im eyng some second hand aero for future with hope to get a good deal that is in my price range

You want patina? It takes wear. Buy one and wear it every day.
My father in law gave me a Hercules horse hide leather (Sears) in 1978, it was 25 years old when he gave it to me. I sold it in 2010 or so. I was too fat to wear it. Same reason he gave it to me...The liner was shot, but the leather looked fantastic.
For a decent jacket without breaking the bank look at US Wings. They are 30 minutes up the road in Hudson, Ohio.

Thanks for the great video! $$$ aside, I worry I couldn't pull off a "best" piece of clothing because everything else I own is just "good." Do top tier leather jackets still "fit in" with a more casual wardrobe? Or will I look like I stole it lol

Where I came from, we can get a high quality sheepskin jacket from a really good artisan who have been making leather jacket for years for just under $100. You can custom the size, leather, and lining too. It’s a privilege.

They’re really tough to find. HIMEL has a couple womens models, but other than that I’ve only seen Schott with any decent choices.

Great video Carl, appreciate all of the info. I'm going with a Cafe Racer Schott in Horsehide and will look at getting it altered(depending on how it fits). Thank you Sir! By the way, is there a 'dressier' version of Nick's boots out there (similar place in the price/value quadrant)? One of your videos turned me on to Nicks and I'm on my 2nd pair. I think I saw a podcast where they (Nick's) mentions they are working on a 'dress' line of boots.
