How Jake Knapp Produces 127+ mph Effortless Clubhead Speed

  • There are two basic ways to "release" the golf club - with the hands like the GOATs or with the body. Both work and can produce the same end result.
    There’s been a lot of questions about Jake Knapp's golf swing and how he produces so much clubhead speed. It's an awesome swing, so let's take a look at it. Now, as he goes back, look how wide he keeps his wrist. This is something I’ll be talking about in an upcoming video about exactly how the wrists and hands work and all three motions that they make in terms of rotation, deviation, extension and flexion. In the meantime, this is something that will help you understand where speed comes from in the swing and overall control.
    Jake swings well over 120 miles an hour, hits the ball a mile and notice how little he's doing with his wrist as he goes back. He's keeping them wide. This keeps the club face control; helps you create a wide arc and a wide turn. But also, as we look down the line, you're going to see he's going to keep his lead wrist in extension for a long time.
    A lot of times people look at somebody like Dustin Johnson, who really shuts the face at the top and bows the wrist a lot and keeps the body rotation going through the hitting area in order to get the club to work through the ball. Whereas the old school way, done by golfers like Tiger and Jack, is that they're releasing the hands. So you can release the body, you can release the hands. Both will kind of create the same results but in very different ways.
    One is much easier on the body than the other, one has won more majors than any other, and one requires a lot less athleticism than the other.

    Having had back and spine issues in the past trying the body rotation swing, I am 100% in agreement with Chuck that the hand/wrist release swing is the way to go for a swing that will work for many years!

    This whole approach is so fantastic. Was swinging today and swinging driver up around 106 to 107 swing speed….have never been there before and it felt effortless again like you said with Jack N…. drive the hips to the target and throw the club from the top so much easier than swinging with the body really excited.

    One thing that resonates with me is how long is right foot stays connected to the ground. I was told to kick off the right foot as soon as possible, similar to how Justin Thomas does it, and I just couldn’t get it. I took a lesson from a local pro and he told me to keep my foot on the ground for as long as I can and just swing the club with my hands and it was the easiest feeling ever

    Great video and analysis. Chuck listening to your insights and explanations have helped me so much with changing to a rotary swing. Not to mention how easy it is on the body. After a round I would be basically useless for the rest of the day but now I can play pain free and in comfortable shoes (no more need for spikes). Cannot thank you enough. Your contributions to golf instruction are invaluable. Thank you so much for a swing I can hopefully make for the rest of my life. 🤞🏼

    As per Mike Austin, there is no 'holding the lag' and the rotational response of the arms through the hit is intent started right from the top of the swing.
    I just pummelled 3 woods at the range flying 250 through the air by feeling like I let my hands cross over fluidly and quickly through impact. The exact opposite of what I was coached for years. But the intent must begin from transition otherwise it happens too late to be effective when the clubhead gets to the ball.
    It feels like I'm beginning the process of flinging the clubhead toward the target through the ball right from transition. In fact, the more a did it and the longer my downswing felt, the straighter and more piercing the flight became.

    A catch 22 of modern instruction “the body swing takes timing out and u can ‘rotate’ thru as hard as h want”. This never digested w me bc if u have a “Hovland” body rotational swing it is still timing and dependent on ur range of motion that day. Which is easy if u r pga working out every day and not sitting at ur 9-5 desk job like most of us who having varying ranges of flexibility based on what we did that week / pre round warm up. Ultimately there will always b an element of timing in the swing. If there was no timing then y do body swingers still have big misses like the rest of us (eg Hovland hangs one out to the left bc it doesn’t cut). Will admit the “body” based instruction has merit (eg I think low point control much better if ur body rotation is solid)

    • @Rotaryswing
      @Rotaryswing  7 місяців тому +7

      Agreed! The reality is that most people will never be able to move their body like Niemann, DJ or Hovland. I used to swing this way when I was in my 20s and hit the ball great and it was simple. Now in my late 40s I wouldn't dream of trying to swing that way. The trick to learning to tame the timing when the hands rotate over like they do in Tiger's, Jacks and Jones' swing is understanding how the wrists move throughout the swing which I'm going to show in the next video using the Hackmotion.

      Hi Chuck. Thanks for this. Interestingly, I started golf out like this with a massive amount of wrist rotation, swing speed in the 130s. Was told was not the best way and tried to convert to body rotation. And lost so much consistent speed. I'm back to my old ways now! At 57, and was recently clocked at 127 club speed in Quad. Trying to get back to the 130s. 😮 This video was a reminder that I'm doing the right thing.

    Mickelson also releases hard like this, rather than strictly body rotation--no holding off of the release at all, and he did pretty well.... He also tends to get the club way past parallel on the backswing, like Knapp does. And Daly.

    So this is a ' late wrist set?

  • @markmugerditchian2403
    @markmugerditchian2403 6 місяців тому

    I would prefer you discuss the right wrist, because, with your right (trail) wrist is in complete flexion, the left wrist must be in extension. The right wrist then stays in flexion in the downswing by internally rotating the right wrist, while in complete flexion, as fast as possible from the top of the downswing. It stays that way until the club shaft is parallel to the ground. This keeps your right elbow close to your body and leading until club shaft parallel, where the right wrist then begins to throw the clubhead at the ball for a powerful release, and effortless power has you always talk about. To me, it is more about the right wrist action than the left wrist because the right wrist is doing all the work. Thinking and focusing on the right wrist instead of the left, you get the same results you discuss about the left wrist, but no have intention focused on what is actually creating the power and release, which is the right wrist. Does this make sense?

    • @Rotaryswing
      @Rotaryswing  6 місяців тому

      The right wrist in the case of tiger and other greats is only supplying supplemental speed and feel. The lead side is still doing the bulk of the heavy lifting. You can add more right than they did but it’s not what the goats did in their swings

    I have a theory that it's because he's left-handed playing right-handed! I think his clubs are very high balanced or even counterbalanced with heavy overall weight. If you look at his positions and the things he does it's not like the typical ways that you guys always recommend getting power. There's not any type of dramatic extension with his hips there's not any type of dramatic vertical force that you can see in all these things that that everyone talks about. I think he is swinging a heavy Club overall what's much more weighted toward the handle and he is just turning and releasing that club the majority of the leverage and the power is coming from his lead side! Can't find anyone to confirm this and I can never find actual information online but that is 100% my theory right now and I'm at a point where I'm getting sick of trying to research this stuff because nobody gives you any real information. Even when I go to look up what's in the bag it doesn't tell me anything specifically about the clubs he has except what model they are which has nothing to do with the way his tweaked them

    • @jacobr4558
      @jacobr4558 3 місяці тому

      So when you're talking about the arm versus the body release I'm wondering if the modern equipment requires more of a counterbalance because the clubs are so much longer? I honestly can't help but feel like Jake naps clubs must be counterbalanced in some way? The reason I think that is because you can't really release your hands and arms like that if the swing weight is too heavy. Overall weights fine your body can support that but the swing weight itself if you're swinging more hands and arms I don't feel like you could actually catch the club up at a certain swing weight. Now for him obviously his arms are muscular and he could catch up a heavier weight than I could but I'm just saying for the average person they probably need a much lighter swing weight if they're trying to release with their hands and arms correct?
