  • On July 23rd, 2018, a 000 call was made from a house in Sunbury in Melbourne, Australia. The caller bluntly and calmly said they thought they had killed someone. When officers arrived at the home, they were met with a face they knew all too well…and this would all be the tip of the iceberg as they started looking into this frightening case.

Gosh. I live in Melbourne and didn’t know this one.
I feel like there’s so many prejudices here. She’s a young white female with mental health issues. He was an Indian student here on a visa. If the roles were reversed there would ABSOLUTELY be a very different outcome. I’m absolutely disgusted and fear for my own children at the way our system works here.

Murder is not really punished in Australia. Australian juries are notorious for downgrading or acquitting murderers. When I was working as a nurse in mental health in Melbourne, I cared for a few women in community care units who also had extreme borderline personality disorders. I agree with the assessments made of this woman even though I never knew her. However, going by the extreme behaviours of my patients/clients it's a wonder this sort of thing doesn't happen more often.
The things these women did to themselves, to others including staff were shocking and the stuff of nightmares. I was always hypervigilant and like the other staff frequently phoning the emergency services. Driving to the CCU one night, I was confronted by an ambulance, a fire truck and a police car all with sirens wailing. I nearly drove off. There had been three separate incidents, requiring all three services!
There would be knife threats (rehab units must have knives to prepare food!), other physical and verbal threats towards themselves other patients and staff, fake allegations of rape, fake suicide attempts, a couple patients had pets they neglected so I had to call the RSPCA, most of the staff had their cars vandalized, though mine wasn't for reasons unknown.
I received a phone call one evening from a police officer who said to me (paraphrasing) we at the police station don't know how you guys do the job that you do. Wow, I was shocked and thanked him for his recognition.
Yep, mental health staff don't carry tasers or guns. Our only protection are our emergency button and our wits. De-escalation only works if you know what's coming.
The judge got it wrong BIG time. It's impossible for some judges to accept the views of other professionals.
I'm deeply sorry for the loss of this young man's life. She should've been locked up a long time ago. The world is not safe with these kinds of individuals roaming free. Counselling and medication have their limits, obviously.
