"A Japanese court on Thursday sentenced a 45-year-old man to death for setting fire to the renowned Kyoto Animation studio in 2019, which left 36 people dead in the country’s worst mass killing in almost 20 years, according to public broadcaster NHK. The defendant, Shinji Aoba, was charged with murder and arson after telling police his work had been plagiarized and that he used gasoline to set fire to the studio. He was found guilty by the Kyoto District Court on Thursday(Thursday,January 25th,2024)." He's so going to be hung high
for what he had done. And to pay homage to the Mortal Kombat franchise, and with all due respect,to that
damned Mister Shinji Aoba,I say,and I quote!,... *"TO THE NETHERREALM WITH YOU!!!!!!!"*

As the ones who made “A Silent Voice”. One of the very, and I mean very, few movies that got me to feel again. I am not someone who cries. That might be taken the wrong way so let me explain. I am the type of person who bottles everything up. I most of the time cannot get my true emotions to show and when I feel like I need to cry, I cannot. During Covid. I kind of shut myself off from any social things as I was not a text or caller. I really only talked to people in person at the time. I was going insane, day passing by day. I didn’t know what season it was. Just mindlessly going day by day, waiting for something to change. I came across this movie on a video talking about the ‘big three’ movies of anime. A silent voice, your name, and weathering with you. And I decided to give A Silent Voice a watch. This was before my family knew I watched anime(closet weeb). But at those pivotal moments I just started crying. I had to go to my room so no one would question me. But this movie hit me so hard in a time I was so numb that it changed me. Restrictions around this time just started to lax up. And this movie kinda shocked me back into reality. That movie that they beautifully animated is the most impactful pieces of artwork I have ever had the pleasure of experiencing. It brings me great sadness that those people who have helped me and so many others experience so much, die from an event so terrible. That movie alone has probably changed countless lives. And maybe even saved just as much. I hope that the message they sent out to the world reaches more people

The fact that it’s been almost 4 years since this happened and Aoba _STILL_ hasn’t gone to trial is an agonizing dose of reality as to just how slowly the justice system proceeds in our world. It’s reported that the trial _might_ happen sometime between Sept-Dec of this year, but I’m not entirely convinced it will (I suspect the defense will order another psych evaluation to determine Aoba’s competency-despite the fact he’s already undergone two-in an attempt to delay the trial yet again). I hope that justice gets served though.
*Edit: the Kyoto District Court announced in May that Aoba’s trial begins on September 5th, 2023, & a verdict will be announced on January 25, 2024. I’ll be honest, I think that date’s gonna be delayed again (plus the verdict date has me even _more_ skeptical of that), but all we can do is wait & hope that the trial does in fact happen soon.
**2nd Edit: The trial began on September 5th, and to my surprise, Aoba pled guilty to all the charges and openly admitted to starting the fire. According to reports, Aoba claims he now knows he “went too far” (yeah no fucking shit??) and that he “didn’t think so many people would die.” Personally, I think that’s a sorry excuse for slaughtering three dozen people by burning, but the defense is still sticking to their argument that Aoba was mentally ill at the time & therefore not criminally responsible. While I can kind of see why they’d go down that avenue, that doesn’t excuse the fact that 36 people are never coming back & that he ripped apart so many peoples’ lives for _ABSOLUTELY NOTHING._ Regardless, more updates to come as the trial progresses, or if it goes straight to sentencing.

However, a dedicated doctor made sure Aoba healed enough to stand trial. Initially, he was given less than a 10% survival rate.

Such a horrible, sad story. That studio really was special, animators are treated very badly in Japan and these people treated their artists with love and respect. So many young lives lost. Once again, untreated mental illness winds up in tragedy. Someone this violently unstable and delusional should have been institutionalized. How many times did he have to go berserk? I'm also sad that this didn't change the lack of fire standards for small businesses, not a single sprinkler in a three story wooden building, smh. RIP to all the victims.

I understand the fire was expanding very quickly, but I think less deaths and injuries would have occured if there was a back staircase and sprinklers installed. Same accident happened about two years ago in Osaka, where a crazy person set a staircase on fire in a bulding where was no second staircase to escape.

I was so sad to hear that a lot of people (significant to the anime I have watched) were victims to the arson. I remember the anime community grieving that time, and even a memorial background in the rhythm game Osu! was put up. They got back up on their feet surprisingly quick, and was still able to release the shows planned in 2019. Truly an unfortunate event where an identified deranged person was not reprimanded early enough.

This man had attacked so many people and his terrorizing was reported over and over to police, yet NOTHING was done. He received NO mental health care, so his insanity fermented until he reached his tipping point. This horrific crime did not have to happen, because it could have been avoided, if law enforcement had intervened.

Exactly, the fire law in Japan is unbelieveable and even more if you think that most of the buildings are made of wood and plaster. I live in Japan and our family lives in a concrete apartment bulding. I would never ever live in a wooden house. Our apartment bulding has two staircases, fire extinguishers in front of every flat and smoke detectors. Still I feel this is not enough but better than most of buildings here in JP. There are just too many fires every day.

  • @loveforeignaccents
    @loveforeignaccents Рік тому +18

Just horrific. I would hate to be burned to death or even be burned to such a degree and live through the pain. I wonder why small businesses weren't required to have sprinklers, but I would think fire extinguishers would simply be the decision of the owner of the company, whether to have them or not. Too bad they gave that POS treatment in the hospital for his injuries for a year, although I know they couldn't deny him of that. Also wonder why, if the DP is in fact an option, he wouldn't more likely be facing that, rather than a life sentence.
Anyhow, thanks for the upload, ladies. Stay safe & have a good one!

I remember when this happened. The art studio I was helping my friend with painted a collage of all of our favorite works done by Kyoto Animation and sold it at an auction. The piece included characters from Free, Dragon Maid, Nichijou, and even their far more obscure but major footprint in video game and animation history, the FIRST Super Mario movie from back in 1986, “Super Mario Bros.: The Great Mission to Rescue Princess Peach!”
The film was filled with shameless sponsors to make up for the budget (cause it was 80s Nintendo lol) and even the precursor to the Mario 64 Bowser fight and even a concept for a greedy Luigi that would lay the ground work for Wario. I won’t spoil the movie’s twist but it’s wild.
But when we eventually sold the piece and prepared to send the money to the studio, they actually refused the money. It was very humbling. In fact, ALOT of people voluntarily offered to send them money to support them and the victims but it just became too much for them that they started to decline the offers.
They were and still are filled of wonderful animators and artists and I still hope to this day that they are doing well in spite of all that happened ♥️

I got into Anime late in high school with Death Note (given from a friend, he had it all downloaded) but then I went on to discover Kyoto Animation and they were easily my favourite studio hands down, especially once I found their adaptations of Key's visual novels (Kanon, Air and Clannad)
I've just realised the last time I watched any Anime was around the time this tragedy happened. I was devastated by it and couldn't bring myself to keep watching (I would often rewatch KyoAni series whilst looking for the next thing to come even remotely close to what they could achieve)
RIP to all the people taken unnecessarily during this horrific attack, hope the families are doing better and have been able to start healing since this all happened 😞

The hero buying marked down meat is just a struggle trope, it's also in the first season of Cobra Kai and probably in other fiction too.

The fire law in Japan is a joke. Bad joke which costs too many lives. There are many tall buldings with no second staircase. If there is a fire, it is over for all people trapped inside.

I remember when I found out about this. My mother (who isn't into anime too much) knew how bad this was by the fact I broke down crying in front of the family.
It's hard to watch this, but I feel like this needs to be seen, and the victims talent needs to be remembered.

A crime like this is always going to be an atrocity.
But something like this being comitted against a company that seems genuinely fairly ethical (as these things go), a good place to work, and which made quality media that people genuinely love?
    Its unbearably awful.

Wait a minute. The only change that was made to policy was to make it so that you basically had to pass a background check for buying large quantities of gasoline? Are you kidding me?!
They went after exactly the wrong thing. How about instead of putting some kind of restriction on the amount of gas you can purchase to something like oh I don’t know making it mandatory for buildings like that to have proper fire, suppression systems, like fire, sprinklers, and extinguishers?
As a former firefighter, I can tell you right now that a building like studio one would likely never be cleared to be used as a place of business without extensive internal remodeling.
Also over 30+ people killed, and he’s only getting life in prison? In the US he would’ve gotten the death penalty.

Bad building codes is what I thought too as I look at that building, no fire exits. The building was building like a box.

    • @ultrajd
      @ultrajd 11 місяців тому

@@knife-wieldingspidergod5059 my father used to work as a fire marshal over the years and one of his duties was to look over blueprints of building projects, and examine where the fire suppression systems were to go, and you know where the fire exits were, and all that. Now, unfortunately, this event took place long after he passed away, but I can tell you right now that my father is probably rolling in his grave right now, because of the rather poor design of the building.
No, yes, regulations in other countries are obviously different, but just seems like a common sense thing.
And again, going after the gasoline thing is probably you like I already mentioned exactly the wrong thing to do.
This probably doesn’t equal out, but I think of it as being kind of like where you have a shooting event somewhere lake say in the United States. And instead of going after things that could actually fix the problem. Like, maybe giving schools better security, and enforcing stricter regulations when it comes to harassment and bullying , the policymakers go after exactly the wrong thing, which is in the case of events like the various school shootings, and they go after the firearm. Almost like the firearm had a conscious decision for what it was being used for when of course, in reality it didn’t.
But that’s a completely different canna worms. Regardless, the fact of the matter is, is that a mentally disturbed individual took the lives of a large number of individuals who literally had nothing to do with him. And, of course, the rather poor design of the building itself.
