Found at the pinnacle of industry, this composite of one of Earth’s most abundant elements lets mankind go farther, faster, on the ground, in the sky and even into outer space. But it’s hard to work with, expensive to produce, easy to get wrong-yet Roger Dubuis has managed to make an entire watch with it.

You remember that scene in Forrest Gump when Bubba lists all the types off shrimp you can eat? You just did that but for carbon fibre! I think there was a watch in there too somewhere.
“Anyway, like I was sayin', shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that's about it.”

I’ve never been sold on carbon fibre or other ‘lightweight’ non metal composites(except ceramic) for high end watchmaking. That’s one of the reasons I hate RM. A sturdy, lightweight composite for an Apple Watch or a G-Shock or other utility watches is great, but a luxury watch is all about that feeling of likeable heft and pleasing touch points. Mechanical watches aren’t about rational, logical usage. Then why not indulge in traditional materials and leave modern materials for watches which see actual wear.

I knew practically little to nothing about Roger Dubuis watches except for having seen them in the more traditional forms of the late 1990s to 2000s. I think I’ll be impressed of the machining if they were actually precise enough to machine the gears out of the CFRP blocks. As it is, I don’t see the point. The CF isn’t being used in weave to create light weight high strength parts (like Koenigsegg CF wheels). Purpose-wise in this watch, it is just a filler for the epoxy. It might as well be charcoal dust in resin then CNC the cured block.

Great video & I like them all, but having spent some time in composites for a race team, I have to correct your opening statement.
"It's the wonder material of the 21st century", really should be the 20th century as it was invented in 1958 & widely used in aerospace & aviation through the 70's.
If I were to pick Id say Graphene & grahene nanotubes are the wonder material of the 21st century, as its uses ranging from batteries to high strength applications are still being developed.
You cover the history of the development of carbon fiber 1/2 way into the video (you REALLY went into it :) ), realising that it was in use through the 20th century.
    Either way incredible watch!

@Bernd DasBrotThe phrase "Good material" should be used in context to the object that's made out of the material. Otherwise you could say: water is good material and so is asphalt.
Carbon fiber is a great material...for an airplane wing...but not for a watch. Other than being lightweight it has all the wrong properties.

    • @shaikon5617
      @shaikon5617 4 роки тому

@Bernd DasBrot"Strong" is a very vague and completely unscientific term. Carbon fiber has a high modulus of elasticity and high tensile strength - these 2 properties are completely irrelevant for a watch case.
It's surface hardness is extremely low (MUCH lower than 316L steel or grade 5 titanium). the epoxy resin that holds the fibers together is prone to degradation over time due to UV exposure - this will cause discoloration and loss of strength.
If damaged due to impact or abrasion (which will happen quite easily) it's next to impossible to fix.

@@prawirasatria7399 ha! No it's in the lattice bracing of Australian guitars, a design invented by Greg Smallman in the 80s after he asked John Williams what he would improve about the guitar if he could. Williams said, I would like more sustain on the treble. Even fretboards are being made of it but most people who own them don't know this ;)

Brian Cullen B wow i just know that, thanks for the information.
The only uses of carbon fibre in classical guitar that i know is just for truss rod part.
I can’t imagine how bright the treble sound would like if the carbon bracing system attached into it. Definitely gonna check that our. Thanks mate!

At this price point, time-telling is almost beside the point. However, couldn't they have used a better font for the name? It looks like some default font a graphic program would use when a font file couldn't be found (Courier comes to mind), or something a graphic designer would use when too lazy to find something more sublime.
