    Still one of the most jaw dropping intros ever in a tutorial tape…no delay, or reverb, no backing tracks…just pure unadulterated and CLEAN playing!
    Also the first guitar tape I owned, and still a favourite player and teacher. Paul knew that his students would watch it over and over again so he’s always included humour in his tapes
    I must have played this tape to death back in the day…even my mum knew half the dialogue (along with Michael Angelo Batio’s Star Licks VHS!)

    The best part about this is that Paul himself shows you most licks here in the video. I do wonder how many people could actually play the entire thing as well as he does. I can do most of the licks by themselves cleanly but it's another level to combine everything so smoothly like that.

    • @thefourthwritedjentleman3643
      @thefourthwritedjentleman3643 Рік тому +12

      Spot on and well said about combining them, individually yep ok, still not easy, but then just cleanly transitioning is another thing entirely
      I wonder how many takes it took him - I wouldn’t honestly be surprised if it was the first 😂

      @MrMetalhorse Рік тому

      @The Fourth Write Djentleman Yeah, dude. That's the other thing. I can shred, but if it has been a couple of days since the last time I played, I have to warm up a little and get my hands synchronized. To be able to just jump in and shred like that, you have to be in that zone where you know you've been practicing a lot and the everything is in synch immediately.

I recently recorded it as I wanted to play it 20 years ago almost, but never invested much time into it and i know i'd have to practice much more to get it as clean as he does on some parts. Awesome transcription, thanks a bunch! You gotta tackle some Shawn Lane solos at some point, those are so hard to figure out!

    He was such a beast! I don't think he has that hypershredding accuracy these days! He is a different beast nowadays, probably a more useful one.
    But damn, there's something really impressive with these type of skills.
    Insane actually.

    I had his instructional videos back in the day on VHS and I actually managed to learn some things and some great pentatonic licks. What let me down when I was learning this at the age of 15 or 16 is that I have no idea about timing and how to play the notes in time along with a metronome.

    Not into the shred stuff anymore but he’s the one that got me into it all those years ago. No doubt in my mind who is the best at it.

    Total watershed moment. Hearing all of those early shredders......completely dumbfounded as how to do it. I saw Yngwie live in 84 and was shocked. Hearing Gilbert blew my mind. He was more impressive than Yngwie. Now I had been playing out as a teen and understood that you could get away with slop when being heard live vs a board tape. I watched the same set of myself with a live video vs the board tape. Even with recording I knew there is some leeway because I had a 4 track recorder. With these guys i wondered how good they actually were. Eary aYngwie and Gilbert were 100 the real deal. When I finally got to see this video after it had come out I was astounded! Even better, I was relieved that I could understand what was going on. He completely lifted the veil of secracy off of advanced guitar playing

    I am a big fan of yours Levi. I was a "shredder" in the late 80s, but grew up hearing Bluegrass, Country, etc.; which led me to learn Bebop (as much as I can). You have been a huge help on my recent journey because you love all music like me, but you are great.

    What I noticed most between him and Yngwie was, Paul was more aggressive and he didn't cover the same gound as Yngwie did a lot of the time. After about 10 minutes of listening to Yngwie, Ive heard enough. Paul covers many variations of similar riffs, but they sound noticeably different.

    Pablo Gilberto was, and still is, absolutely mind-blowing.
    He's sort of traded a bit of these insane chops for a *lot* more feel and great tone... More going for the right note at the right time, instead of every single note all at once 🤣🤣🤣
    And he's a great teacher too.

    Hope some youtuber would invite Paul to react to his old videos from GIT years, Racer X, the REH lesson videos and so on. Paul is probably one of the most documented guitarist in youtube. We can even see his guitar wars clip, back when he held the pick with his 3 fingers.
