Here's another trick I learned from a Jamaican drummer to achieve a louder cross stick. If you don't have a snare with die-cast hoops, simply take an old snare head and cut out the skin with a box cutter so that your left with only the ring of the head. Then, place the ring UNDER the snare head you actually plan to use (in other words put the ring on first). Doing this will raise the hoop of your snare about a quarter inch and increase the volume of your cross stick hits.
Omg its kool you know that trick too. The concepts you spoke about in the video are highly focused on by us Jamaican drummers playing reggae . You may even say that's the backbone of reggae playing.
Hello my friend. You got the best "Reggae" sound that each kit could give. In the 70s there was not a lot of die cast hoops anywhere in Jamaica, and not in any of the major studios. Matter of fact I don't think many of us knew what that was at that time. We were using Ludwig drums with the 400 snares. Drummers took their snares to the sessions. While it is not wrong, it a bit misleading for 'You Tube Reggae drum set teachers' to keep teaching it as a triplet or shuffle feel. A majority of the time it is not, and this causes a distortion of what is and is not, particularly where fills are concerned. Lastly, Rockers is not the name of a type of Reggae, rather it was another name for Reggae, even before my friend Mr. Dunbar started recording.
On reggae songs like: As long as you love me- by the Maytones and O.K Fred by Errol Dunkley. I was wondering how did they get that bright drum tone, now I know
The only suggestion for the the lovers rock groove you played, tighten the snare a little more so it sounds like a piccolo. I'm a drummer and play in a local reggae band in Richmond VA
Hey guys, I love the groove and sound you found on the drums. Could I sample and use some of your rolls on my music? I will give credit of course. Thank you and I will wait on the answer.
You can't show a picture of bunny wailer when you are referencing Carlton Barrett... I will let you off with it as they were in the same band and both are now sadly passed away... blessed be 🙏
This video thought me how they get that punchy Tom Tom sound no reso heads is the secret I was looking for, thanks. And if u wanna get that loud hi sound on a snare i used a old snare side head (3mil) but it didn't last long but had a super sound because of having 3mil on reso and batter
Santa Davis, Style Scott? The Roots Radics? Azwad,, Drummie Zebb. Come on man, you gotta do more homework. Don’t get me wrong, Carlton and Sly are no doubt legendary, but there are guys who played some beautiful drums that influenced legions of drummers. And they all had their own sounds.. I think you really did a nice thing to chronicle reggae drumming.. it is so deep, so vast, it needs to go deeper than this. Hey that’s my only criticism.: you went this far, make more volumes and you will only make yourself better. Much respect ..
not every single reggae track limits themselves to only side sticking... some of the best dub and reggae records have real snare hits, the tuning on the snares is impeccable though probably why you've avoided it, not to mention the use of spring reverb on the snare is overly prominent in dub... these were such easily made points that got looked over to delve into theory that's slightly past that? i feel like you're focusing on the wrong things in this vid...
Needs concert toms and more. Not those kinds of converts without hoops and heads aren't smart and not neat. Why do you have to do that? If you are sincere, do it.
Reggae has had massive success around the world it's one of the most loved and known genres in the world, your opinion doesn't mean anything, reggae makes people feel happy and makes them dance, you obviously haven't listened to reggae properly, because your commenting negative opinions on video about reggae
Those toms sound perfect, not to mention you wouldn't be getting much bleed from the toms in the mix!

Wow that's awesome 🤘🏽
Won't this also allow you to tune the snare higher more easily?
Ive played reggae music for years and only now learned this from u…. What the hell🤣
I'm in love with these hihat triplets.

Carlton Barretts drumming was the most ideal drumming for reggae.

On reggae songs like: As long as you love me- by the Maytones and O.K Fred by Errol Dunkley. I was wondering how did they get that bright drum tone, now I know

Hmmmm no rim shots? Not impressed...
The tight snare can't compare with timbales.
You speak too close to your mic man..
Why a white boy explaining this with no feeling?? Honestly
where's the weed?

Definitely the “WRONG” drummer for a video on reggae!!!!!!
i always disliked reggae, neverending bassloops, lazy, so lazy people... No variation:(
And what about the sound?
@@HomeOfDrums It sounds like that lazy neverending stupid reggae... Satisfied?
I kind of like it
shut up no one cares
