  • Hal, a resident of New York City, was active in the Sathya Sai Organization from the 1980's onward, until ill health in the 2000's caused him to cut back on activities. He made some 24 trips to see Sathya Sai Baba in Prasanthi Nilayam. He enjoyed leading groups of people there.
He embraced selfless service (seva) wholeheartedly. Even as President of Jack L. Honig Inc., a company that manufactured children's clothes, he made and distributed sandwiches to homeless on the streets of NYC. He persuaded many restaurants to donate rather than throw out leftover food. He recruited friends to join him every evening to collect the food and distribute the food to the homelessy. A PBS television documentary on hunger and homelessness in New York City praised Hal's food service to the homeless, calling him "the sandwich man".
He also mentored students in secondary schools, where he introduced innovative programs that motivated failing inner city teenagers.
Hal died on July 1 at the age 85.
