Our next guest, Ryan Hendrickson, joins us this Christmas to share his incredible journey of becoming a United States Special Forces Green Beret and demining landmines across Ukraine, saving countless lives.
This episode connects with a former guest, Kyle Morgan, who, in his previous interview, discussed the mission during which Ryan was wounded. Shawn personally calls Kyle during the interview, allowing us to hear both perspectives on the remarkable actions of Kyle and another comrade that resulted in saving Ryan Hendrickson's life after Ryan made his way to an Afghan terp who had wandered off into uncleared territory. As Ryan was clearing his way back, he began to witness movement, and a few steps later, his life would change forever. Ryan survived stepping on an IED and shortly returned to service after a successful limb salvage surgery.
Once again, Ryan found himself in other life-and-death situations during an intense combat deployment where his unit was ambushed. Kyle reflects on this story during the show, which ultimately led to him being awarded the Silver Star for his actions that day. This episode covers a multitude of topics, including veteran victimization, overcoming trauma, reinventing oneself, the Afghanistan withdrawal, and Ryan's work in Ukraine.

Hey Shawn, I’m a 101st Veteran. Infantry. There’s tons of guys who have never been able to tell their story. Can you see if you can snag up any of the Vietnam 101st vets for an interview?
My Great Uncle served as tunnel rat, he was stuck in there for 3 days after his battle was killed and never spoke of it. The only reason we is because that’s what the Army told my Grandma, his sister. Maybe you can get one of these fellas to open up.

I am humbled by the valor, the bravery and the duty that it took for our warriors to stand up for those of us who really never understand what it took for these great men who gave their lives for The United States of America! We owe you more than we can ever afford to repay! Shawn you are a true hero! A man who knows how to fight, and humbly bends his knee in the presence of almighty God! Those who were Father's, mother's, children. Thanks their families for their sacrifice. I came home without a scratch...

My father served in the army. He's 88 and was in korea during Peacetime. All he will say is that he and his team had something to do with clearing mines. That and he hates Korea. It's obviously an extremely psychologically difficult assignment. He will not tell me anything else.

One of my childhood friends joined the Army as an EOD guy and did a few deployments to Afghanistan. I can still remember how worried I was for him when he was deployed.

My husbamd is a veteran who spent a year in Iraq. And oh my goodness, the stories he's told me. Some he said he would only tell me once. After hearing them, I understand why 😔 I had no idea some of the things they did and went through. We're raised to believe certain things. We have to be patriotic and support the troops no matter what or else we're un-American. And that would be the worse thing, is what we're told. Some of these men absolutely do deserve the honor and glory, and the ones that do, don't want it. The ones who make sure they are thanked for their service are the ones who don't deserve it because they didn't earn it. Over the years, I've learned a lot and understand so much more. So thank you to those who don't want to be thanked. Just know that it's no longer because I have to thank you because that's what I was raised to do. It's a heartfelt, heart-broken, honest, genuine, perspective shifting, coming from a different understanding thank you ❤

I'm on my husband's UA-cam and didn't know if I could watch this. My husband stepped on a daisy chain, he's still here. The percussion broke his back in 4 places. He felt it click. Something came around him and protected him. The ringing he hears all the time. He dreams of the sound too
