A previous neighbour did wood turning and used to do loads of pens. He made some for me using pieces of chestnut from an old section of fence that used to go around our gardens. The grain on the chestnut really stands out and gives a lovely end result.

I always appreciate when you show how to complete a project without a lathe. I have neither the room nor the money for a lathe, so projects like this one are immensely helpful. Now, how ‘bout that Windsor chair, James? :-)

I did that one two weeks ago lol. I didn't use a lathe for that either lol

Yeah I love how he will also show how to complete a project without a lathe. I’ve been thinking of making myself another nice pen for work, but didn’t have a lathe and now I feel really inspired 😁
I know I’m the last pen video James used superglue/CA glue finish.
What else would you recommend for the shiny finish? Polyurethane?

Thank you for the demo. I would like to be a fountain pen maker and for my last art class we get to create a final work. Ideally I want to create a series of 4 wooden fountain pens. Challenge is I’ve only taken two work shops on the lathe and I have no FP supplies. So I’m trying to figure out if it’s realistic for me to given a small budget, to try and hand carve and do it well in a 3 month timeline. This helped me take stock on the tools I’d need in order to do that. Decisions, decisions….

I love those builds because I don't have the room for a lathe and it might also be to messy for my cleaning tastes... and I also loves the octagons a lot !!!

Thanks, James. This is great. Like another watcher, I have no space for a lathe and have wanted to do round-ish things, especially chess pieces and salt and pepper mills. This gives me an idea of how to.

The octagonal seems really nice. Gotta figure out how to make on the lathe...

My lathe (Nova Comet) has an indexing head stock…I just need to make up some form of jig to reference a file off after I turn the blank to the correct diameter. I know that it is possible to make a router sled for making flutes in turned legs for example, but that is not in keeping with the Wood by Wright hand tool ethos.

I'd recommend looking up a "turner's cube" for how to make flat faces on a lathe

tube length on slimlines are super forgiving. the twist insert that is pressed into the tube closest to the tip can be pressed into the brass tube to whatever depth is necessary for the tip to extend and retract properly so the length doest need to be as exact as it would need to be for a cigar pen for example. that is one of the reasons that people suggest the style for new pen makers to start on. i wish i could tell you what type of wood those blanks are but they were prepared so long ago that i forget. also, most if not all of the wood blanks were vacume stabilized with a lesser quality resin so the tone of the wood was affected more than if would be if cactus juice was used or obviously if they were natural.

I had a set and had length problem, but only with one. I guess I did something wrong, but it really didn’t want to match up the lengths (even though everything was same size).

@@A2woodArt the trick with the slimline is to press the twist insert in slowly and check how far the pen tip extends and retracts in increments until the fit is just how you like it. i started out making just slimlines for the first 50 or so pens i made because i did not yet have a pen tube mill.

This is correct unless they were trimmed shorter. As the first one was.

Pretty beautiful work, James! Nicely done! 😃
Some day I'm going to try it myself!

Thanks :) been wondering what to do with some wonky ash and sycamore that we’ve got that’s too twisty for most projects but has some sentimental significance

I dont have a lathe... but I do have a mill with a dividing head, those octagonal pens would be easy to turn out....

Yes. I did a few others later that were with resin instead of wood.

I made a pen without using a lathe. I also made made a pencil and shaped it to match the fingers. So if I can do it so can all of you.
