Hi Mike , Thanks for the detailed instruction I especially liked your MAGNETIC Lifter TOOL I bet a lot of youngsters didn't even KNOW what a "SPEED-HANDLE" was before this VIDEO - LOL COOP ..........................
Thank You. If you're speaking of the Evolution Engine, it's done. The videos are easy to find. Go to UA-cam, pacific mike, then click on "playlists" on our home page.
Oh yes thank u. I’m not there yet. I’m just got me a 91 evo motor and rest of the bike in 15 boxes. With a spun main bearing. Will start the rebuild in the next couple months.. once all the parts are inventoried. Cheers
Great series about the Evo motor! Looking forward to the next video because some day I may need to split my 1985 FXWG motor too... guys like you really help guys like me who belong to the young generation. And I guess all of us just try to keep these motors and machines going 👍🏻
@@pacificmike9501 Other than the M8 of which i own one, all the Harley engines will last if you just do the regular maintenance. It's a bunch of BS about Harley's failing. The M8 should be just as reliable just not enough time to tell yet but they have been successful with all their previous ventures so I don't anticipate that changing. Water is never good on a harley.
So nice to see gear drive cam on the Evo. I am about to deal with fixing HD's design miss for cam chain tensioners on my TC motor. I have lost faith in HD as they did not stand by their product.
Mike, great videos! Got a question. Other than the base gasket, are there any o-rings between the cylinders and the engine base? I know there are o-rings between the cylinders and heads, unless I'm using a Cometic MLS. Thanks!
Hey Mike, first of all thanks for your videos and sharing your knowledge with us. I have a question. I have a 1988 Softail. Can I put the motor together on a stand and install it in the bike. Or do I need to keep the rocker boxes off to put it in the bike?
Almost everything is repairable. You just have to replace all damaged parts, which would be "normal wear" parts anyway. Bearings, most of all. Of course conditions could become extreme, but we hope not. As long as the cases are good, you have a motor to build. But today, there are new cases available and welding equipment like never before.
Once you're in there, r&r'ing the lifters is no big deal. Why did the key shear? Make sure you've backed off on the lifters (loosen if adjustable, remove if they're not) before removing the cam cover.
@@pacificmike9501 I’m just assuming that it sheared, the bike started to misfire and die out of nowhere. I’ve replaced the charging system, coil n spark wires and new Dyna ignition as well as built a new wiring harness. But the bike still won’t run unless I advance it a ton.
@@pacificmike9501 everything in cam chest was good. Ended up readjusting the pushrods to spec of the Jim’s lifters and threw some new plugs in it. Then static timed it. Fixed the issue right up. Hope this helps someone reading these comments. Later n thanks for the extremely useful videos mike.
You are amazing brother! Thank you for your videos… u really helped me through a lot of rebuilding a 1991 Softail fxstc custom EVO. U are always my go to on UA-cam! 🙂I have a question 🙋♂️ I am going to split the cases for my first time over our crappy winter weather in Michigan. Lol planning a complete disassembly and reassembly of the entire motor. Do u have any way to do any messaging??? And any advice for a first time EVO motor tear down??? Thank you for the content …..
Thank You. I show it as it comes up. Unless I need to do otherwise, I only work on my own stuff. Messaging through our comment section is not hard, and I try to answer all of the comments.
Mike, I finished the Shovel. Cant find another reasonable one so im doing an 88 Evo. Is it still orefety much the same as this? I know they changed a few things in the later model. Is there anything I should be watching for? Thanks for your knowledge. Its priceless.
I assume you're referring to the center bolt. It is 3/8 x 16, then ground the end to be smooth yet protrude into the end of the cam without damaging the cam.
DEPENDS. I successfully pulled my engine apart down to the wrist pins and rebuilt it in frame. 87 FXR, 107" to 110". I had to remove the front motor mount, hiemjoints and use jack to raise/lower the engine. No 2 was a tight squeeze but it just cleared without pulling the tranny and pivot shaft. Fxr's were all built in the frame by one wrench at the factory. This contributed to them being fazed out as the time and money required to build them was significant and prevented assembly line style production. That said there's other bikes that you can disassemble down to the connecting rods, I don't know which ones.
I would have it repaired. It would have to go to someone with the experience to do it well. That means someone who welds cases for Harleys. It will need to be removed to work on it. That will require a complete teardown. And then comes the question of what caused it in the first place.
I don't like to pass along opinions that sound negative, but, if everything else is really good, why did the crack occur? If everything else is good, it's a matter of a lot of labor. I understand the dilemma.
@@pacificmike9501 it's a bike I was entertaining the idea of buying, but I'm going to pass on it. I always appreciate your advice and wisdom, thanks for responding. Bike week is upon us here in Florida🤪
No. That one is for shipping a new new motor from one of the manufacturers. But many suppliers of parts do supply them to the public. Glad you like our videos.
A lot of shops in expensive areas have to charge $100.00 an hour. That doesn't mean they "make" $100.00 an hour. I don't use air tools much, because in some places, they beat things up.
Pacific Mike I actually agree. I’m just joking. You did an excellent job taking that engine apart. My dad just died and I got two Harley’s, and it surprises me how similar these engines are to those Chinese 80cc motor kits you can strap on to bicycles. I mean they are a lot bigger and a little more sophisticated, but really the same idea. I wish Harley’s used metric though.
Dudes like Bob Ross of Harley engines… much respect bud!! Very awesome and informative!! Ty!!
Thanks for watching!
Great video, I feel like this is the Bob Ross of EVO motors. Amazing.
Thank you. We'll be back on that Evo soon.
I was just thinking that. I'm glad this is the top comment.
HA!!! I said the same thing today in another of his videos!
I totally agree with you

You can certainly install the motor as a complete unit. It is explained in the factory service manual. You really should invest in one.

Much simpler motor. Very critical, however, on assembly of topend. Adhere to the proper year manual (genuine Harley manual). that should do it.
hi have a question what is the size on the screw home made tool
I assume you're referring to the center bolt. It is 3/8 x 16, then ground the end to be smooth yet protrude into the end of the cam without damaging the cam.
Are you able to do all of this with the motor in the bike or does the motor need pulled?
Valve lifters and cam chest can be done with the engine in place.
