This sounds like a song you'd hear a Skellige sailor mumbling to himself as he works in game.

" He approached her slowly. He smelled of the sea, salt, tar, and fatigue. She looked into his bright eyes, and immediately her ears rang with the war cry of berserkers, the fragmenting of shields, the clanking of swords and axes. The roar of the slain. The roar of the people who jumped from the burning ‘Daria’ into the sea.
    'Yennefer of Vengerberg.'
'Crach an Craite, Earl of Skellige.'
She made a slight bow before him."
    ....
"The Skellige Islands has quite often granted asylum to people who were persecuted by the law. The islands do not lack options and opportunities to atone for debts by hard work, courage, sacrifice, and blood." Witcher, The Tower of the Swallow.

  • @valhalla_1129
    @valhalla_1129 8 років тому +25

I don't know how to describe it perfectly, but there's something really interesting that you did with the background vocals in this one.
Usually with a song like this, you'd expect the background vocals to stay kind of the same throughout the verse, but they often change up at the end of their line and create a more uplifting sound than they usually would.
Like I said....it's hard to explain. I hope everyone knows what I mean, I don't know enough music terms to describe that stuff.
It does sound really good, though, and that's what's important.

    • @miracleofsound
      @miracleofsound  8 років тому +18

Yeah the background vocals delve in and out of following the lead and doing upper/lower harmonies :) I felt like it added a little extra melodic flavour as the main vocal stays on the same three notes a lot

    • @valhalla_1129
      @valhalla_1129 8 років тому +5

miracleofsound Gavin...stop making me love you so much.
But you're completely right, it adds some more melody to it instead of keeping it on the same note for too long, which is a great way to keep it more interesting to listen to. (no matter how many times I hit that replay button ;) )
You're a wonderful guy, Gav. Hope I get to meet you one day (and touch that glorious beard that, honestly, makes me just a tad jealous)

Man, Gav, the ease with which you seem to imitate, or rather, utilize every genre of music there is, whilst giving it your own twist and creating such beautiful ... insights into what you sing about and music itself is just .... baffling.

I can perfectly picture a huge feast in the great hall of Kaer Trolde with Skellige warriors all chanting this song. Some are locking arms with each other singing and dancing. Others are brawling. Mead spilled and food flying everywhere. Tables knocked over. Spattered blood and broken teeth across the floor. Axes and tankards held high. Far better than any Continental banquet 🍻

My favourite artist singing a song about my favourite place in a video game? Yes, please.
I'm new to The Witcher but fell instantly in love with it. Skellige is the main reason why my game is still nowhere near complete (apart from my obsessive need to do every single side quest and Witcher hunt) I've only left twice since getting there and that was for Qwent and running out of quests.

I have to say I am very excited for when we finally get another awesome big RPG.

Heres some info about Skellige's unofficial Witcher School, the School of the Bear, confirmed by emails I sent back and forth with Cody Pondsmith, who helped write a lot of their lore:
-The Bear School is based in the heart of the Amell Mountains near Cintra, and host their final trial on Mt. Gorgon near Toussaint.
-They are loners, and will even time to time fight other Witchers to try and get a contract they really want, but will never kill another Witcher over a contract, just wound, and even then thats after a lot of threats and warnings. If that other Witcher stands firm, they earn the Bears' respect.
-despite wearing heavy armor and rumors saying they tank through blows, their armor is very flexible and theyre just as agile as any other Witcher. They also have a scholarly side, pushing the Quen sign beyond any other Witcher school, and have the same level of konster knowledge as the ither schools.
-They are not based in Skellige, but love hanging out there. This is because, generally, the Bears hate authority and those who try and command them. They therefore get along best with Dwarves, Gnomes, and Skelligers, all who meet them on their own terms and treat them with respect.
-Despite being seen as loners, if they fight alongside a person enough, even other Witchers, they view that person as family and will be willing to die for them.
-They fight to the death for command of the school. Its not known if anyone has ever beaten the school's founder, a massive witcher named Arnaghad.

    Великолепное. Сподвигло меня на перевод.
Perfect! This is my translation to Russian.

So, I hope this isn't a rude question or anything. I'm genuinely curious.
I don't normally hear your native accent during your songs, but here it's quite prevalent, even focused on. It makes me wonder. When you sing normally, do you make any attempt to hide/mask your native accent, or is it just the nature of singing that makes it harder to hear, and thus, you have to emphasize it for songs like this? I suppose I only ask because I've noticed with many other people that their regional accents seem to 'disappear' when singing, and it makes me wonder if it's just a byproduct of proper singing techniques (and the act of singing words just makes it harder to 'hear' them) or not.

Viking, aye, but with heavy Celtic influence too, as well as heavy Irish accents, a lot of Irish-sounding words. Have you seen the druids, and their decor? It's a synthesis of both types of culture.
