    Hi Woody!
I really appreciate you taking the time to do this wrap-up on the Yamaha DGX-670, thank you!
I have said it before and I will say it again - you look cool wearing that hat!! Also, you demonstrate these things and play with so much joy that you make me smile every time. There’s just something about you and your videos that make me feel good and I genuinely look forward to whatever you are going to do next.
Regarding the DGX-670, you conveyed the message beautifully - there are good reasons to buy a top-shelf arranger but you will be paying for it and the -670 will get you almost there at a fraction of the price. Obviously, you won’t get all the bells and whistles of those top instruments but you will be getting very solid basics and it will surprise you in more ways than one. For me, the compelling factor is the GHS action which, by the way, seems to be phased out by Yamaha as the new P-series digital pianos seem to be using a more compact GHC (Graded Hammer Compact) action and I don’t think it’s as good, but also, I really didn’t know about the ‘piano’ button that dedicates all of the instrument’s hardware to producing the highest-quality piano sound possible, all with sympathetic resonance!! Very exciting if you ask me!!
On top of all of that, it has a USB audio interface built in (!), something that I was disappointed to learn that the newest Yamaha PSR-SX range doesn’t have (and was certain it was going to).
So, apart from limited connectivity, the DGX-670 seems to be the ideal digital piano for the home, with expanded arranger capability to keep you playing for hours and hours. Wonderful!
Regarding the harshness you hear with cymbals, if the instrument has a master EQ, try turning down the 6-10 kHz region and see if that makes a difference. Given the price, the tweeters are probably cone-type as opposed to dome-type typical for more expensive stuff, and these can be sometimes a little brittle-sounding. Still, I doubt it’s audible in the ‘piano’ mode and from what I’ve gathered from your videos, the -670 has far better speakers than similarly priced digital pianos.
    Cheers mate!!

Someone else posted that you can reconfigure that 1/8" - -3.5mm jack to be a line level output. I don't know how. But, that running into a small mixer and then onto a set of KRK RP-5s? Awesome sound, I'd be willing to bet!

@@GaryMCurran So would I! It does seem like we've reached a stage where affordable instruments give the very best ones a run for their money, haven't we?

    • @GaryMCurran
      @GaryMCurran 3 місяці тому +3

@@antunkatona5674 I think 'affordable keyboards' still can't match a Genos 2, or my desire, a Korg PA5X-76. I mean, realistically, you're approaching 'workstation' with those two keyboards, and to a lesser extent, Ketron.
As for the actual sounds, however, we've come a very long way since I was selling musical keyboards in the 80s and 90s, 30 and 40 years ago. A DGX-670 isn't going to have the samples that a Genos 2 or the PA5X, or even a Genos or the PA4X, had. Yet, for the price point, they are very good. Now, let me clarify that statement. The higher-end keyboards, have larger samples, giving more detail. They may be samples of the same instrument, literally, but one sample is more detailed than the other, and it is noticeable, but you also have to work at it a bit. This assumes you put both instruments into a DAW at the same levels and you're listening through the same monitoring system.
But, to sit down in a home environment, the DGX-670 is a very good instrument, and given the upgrades I've mentioned elsewhere in this thread, I would certainly own one. I do wish Yamaha would make one change to ALL of their arranger keyboards, and also their Clavinovas (I think the Clavinovas also need this). In 1993, Korg introduced the original i3 'Interactive Music Workstation.' This is the instrument that started out Korg's modern-day 'Arranger Keyboards' line. Even back then, in 1993, for each style, Korg defined up to six chord parts. They were Major, Major 6th, Seventh, Minor, Augmented, and Diminished. For each chord type that you played, you might get a different backing pattern. Sure, the notes you played changed, but the actual pattern might also change. For example, my Korg PA800 has a style called 'Serenade Band' which is basically used for Glenn Miller's Moonlight Serenade. If I play a Major chord, I'll get on pattern, if I play a sixth, I'll get a different pattern, if I play a 7th, I'll get a third pattern, and a diminished and augmented also give me slightly different patterns. My PA800 was released 18 years ago, in 2006. So, this tech has been around for quite some time. Yamaha, to my knowledge, has never adopted it. To me, it makes things more 'musical', because you're emulating real players better. I would love to see this sort of pattern change adopted and integrated into the Yamaha lineup.
One other thing I'll say, with Genos and the PA4X, TO ME, the Korg always sounded more 'realistic.' Maybe I shouldn't use the word 'realistic', but I could use 'natural' or 'acoustic.' I am not into synth sounds (although I use pads often enough), but I prefer acoustic sounds. Yamaha, up through the current Genos 2, has a lot of effects on the samples themselves, at least they did. While I may want effects on the sounds, I want to be able to control how and what, and not have it built into the sample. They did something with the PA5X, and the sounds are better than the PA4X, but I haven't been able to sit down with both and determine which is which and what's happening.
I used to work for a company that built Analog to Digital and Digital to Analog converters, very high-end, used on my recordings you would know. The boss of the company, in working out a new design, called several of us into his office. He had a recording, very high quality, of classical music. He had a working 'breadboard' of electronics on his desk, a couple of monitors and he played back this recording for us. He would change settings, and he had three settings on this work in progress, and he asked us what sounded the best. Most of the people agreed that this one setting was very pleasant to listen to, but I disagreed. I thought the setting that the others offered as 'thin and gutless' sounded the most realistic. In fact, I was correct. This mock-up with an emulator of various kinds of effects, a tube, a transformer, something that would be a mix of the two, and then no effects at all. Almost everyone enjoyed the 'tube' emulation because it DID sound 'warmer and more full.' But, what people were hearing was distortion. However, so many of the songs we listen to today have some sort of effects on them We no longer know what real 'acoustic music' is because we don't hear it that often. Even orchestral music is usually modified in some way in the final mixdown.
Yamaha has done a very good job of taking that sort of effect and putting it on all of their sounds. Yes, I like the final sound, but there are sometimes that I don't want those effects, I want to be able to add them myself.

Hello from Denmark, I have played keyboards for over 20 years as a musican, the last 11 years with an Yamaha Tyros 4 and the last 2 years together with a Korg pa 1000. I dropped my Korg and got a Dgx 670 because it have 88 weighted keys,, for dinner music I only needed this keyboard alone. And VERRY IMPORTANT, connecting to a PA system using the headphone out it is the same as a normal left and right OUT, go to the MENU and use the
external amplifier out and the head phone out is charging to normal L and R out it is a little bit tricky, but I think if they have the normal L and R out yamaha will not sell so many off their other more expensive electric pianos. The dgx 670 is the cheapest keyboard I have used in my stage setup and all what you are saying in this fine video is ABSOLUTE RIGHT if you are pianist you have to try it and save a lot off money.

So basically, it DOES have a line output, you just have to set it up in the menus.

Yes it have a line out, you just have to use a splitter cable in the headphone out, then the dgx change the output signal. Worked fine coonected to a pa system, on you tube you can search Ole Hegelund, a high educated Classically pianist, he have a lot off videos. I have learned that many people use a lot off time to study key beds and hammer technics, few people's use the energi to really learn to play as Ole and he can play the dgx so it sounds like a real grand piano.

So quick question. I have been seriously considering this keyboard, but people keep saying that the dgx 660 allows you to switch the headphone jack to line out, but the 670 does not. But what you are saying is that the 670 does have this capability by going to the menu- is that correct?

Yes, indeed, best piano yet since the beginning of digital pianos. I bought the first digital piano back in the 1980s, owned dozens of Dpianos since in every module and full keyboard versions too, but none were what I considered an instrument, none sounded good, the note decay is always too fast, and the soft pedal and half sustain were never acoustic like. Then finally comes the DGX-670 and it is fantastic, has the most even voiced piano that can be voiced in any way the user desires to build the perfect sounding piano for everyone. The 3 pedal system is a must buy with the DGX-670 with the most perfect soft pedal and wonderful sustain with half pedaling.
The action is fine with me even thought I also own the Roland RD-2000 and the Kurtzweil PC4, all different actions but that is what I need to keep the skill of adapting to stage acoustic pianos. I am sooooooooo happy with this Yamaha, I only bought for the piano, but the arranger and all the other sounds is just an added bonus. Now I can practice piano at home with headphones at any time and get stellar sound, playability, expression, and not disturb the neighbors. The digital piano has arrived and is now an instrument, but only if you buy this piano.

My Mother had the previous model DGX 650, which had a black and white screen, but very similar,.
It has a good sound and is loud enough to fill a living room, but too weak for a party with more than 6 people.
The DGX 670 has a nice color screen, somewhat small still, but big enough to read.
It is not comparable with Genos or PA5X, but really good for beginner and even intermediate player.
I guess the DGX 670 has somewhat better speaker than the older 650.
As I can afford more I will buy A CVP 909 (for 9700 EUR). I would estimate the sound quality of the DGX 670 is about 80% to 90% of the CVP 909, but the price is less than 10%.
So the DGX 670 is really a good deal.
I agree: The bang for the buck is enormus ;-)

Thanks Woody. I see that most of your review comments line up with the comments I left you last time, so that's a great reinforcement for me. I'm sure that Yamaha won't be going through the comments on review videos, but I do hope that they might review what YOU have said.
If Yamaha could do just five things for this keyboard, it would be awesome.
    1. Rear Panel upgrade, to like a EW-425 plus MIDI In and Out Din connectors.
    2. More styles, say like 500 styles.
    3. Three Intros, Endings, Fills and a Break.
    4. Larger, 7" screen, 800x420, even if it's not a touch screen.
    5. Replace the Mod wheel with a joystick.
If they did just those five items, they would have a great keyboard, the best in the price range (and yes, I do think they have the best now, and I'm a Korg fan as you know. Basically, give the SX-720 an 88 key keyboard and we'd be happy! LOL

I love this keyboard and I'm seriously considering getting one, but is there anyone that can tell me exactly, in detail, how to connect it to a PA system through a Mixer, using the headphone out?
Is it possible to do this in any way without degrading the sound?
I think I need to use a TRS cable into the keyboard and then connect into a DI box and from there into the mixing board, but is there an easier way? I know that when I normally use the headphone jack as an out on my P1 15, the sound does not sound great and is thinner.
I really want to use this for live gigging on stage.

    • @WoodyPianoShack

i think you can get away with a TRS to dual mono TS cables into the mixer. but using the headphone jack is not ideal, not line level ourputs and wrong impedance. it might be ok in practice though, but perhaps consider a differenc keyboard, it's a beast anyway to transport.

What I would be interested in knowing is where does this DGX keybed quality stand in relation to cheaper and more expensive digital pianos. What other Yamaha models have the same keybed as DGX, what would be a step up, what would be a step down, etc.
An overall review of keybed technologies in a modern Yamaha lineup would be also super interesting.

From the Yamaha blog: "Graded Hammer Standard (GHS) action incorporates real hammers and is found on many Yamaha digital pianos, including YDP Series and Portable P-Series and DGX-Series models. Instruments with GHS actions are ideal for beginners that want to start getting used to the feel of an acoustic piano."
This is from 2011, so I'm not sure how accurate it is now.
"GH / GHE (Graded Hammer effect):
One of Yamaha's premium weighted actions, provides greater accuracy for faster repetetive passages required by intermediate and advanced pianists. Professional grade components provide a smoother, quiter mechanism when striking the keys.
      GHS (Graded hammer Standard):
Well suited for the beginner pianist and delivers the graded, weighted touch piano teachers recommend for building proper technique for playing acoustic pianos.
      GH3:
Like GH / GHE, but GH3 also swings back faster, like high quality piano keys. GH3 allows the player to feel the weight of the key when depressed a second time, even when the player has not completely released the key after the first push of the key."

@@GaryMCurran Thank you! So it sounds like it's the same technology as in the bottom of the barrel P-45, and that one has the worst key action I ever experienced. Maybe they upgraded it (I tried it like 8 years ago), but if it's still the same as old P-45 it's horrible...

    • @GaryMCurran
      @GaryMCurran 3 місяці тому +1

@@serg472 It certainly isn't a CFX Concert Grand, that's for sure. For a 'weighted action', I will admit that it's pretty far down the line, but then again, I look at the price of the total package and I'm not really too upset. But, then again, you have to understand, FOR ME, I play a keyboard, non-weighted, 'synth action.' So, what is on the DGX-670, to me, is pretty good. No, it's not an acoustic piano, it's not even what's on a Clavinova, which I think is pretty darned good, but even a low end Clavinova is still five to six times the cost of the DGX. That price difference isn't in the electronics, either (well, not most of it).
So, in my opinion, the DGX, for what it is, isn't bad. If parents are buying the DGX to start that young child on the piano, then I think the action is good and appropriate for the child, as well.
But, my comments are just my opinion.

I buy Yamaha keyboards as entertainment tools for my jobs.(I use Roland FP for my "serious" music). My first work/entertainment keyboard was a PSR3000 and I would still be happy to use one for entertaining. They still hold their own 20 years later. The public would probably not notice any difference between a PSR3000 and a Genos 2. Although there obviously been many upgrades/improvements, it has to some extent just been a re-packaging exercise.....new stuff to sell.
I'm currently using a PSR S770 which I bought new when they first came out. .....everything I need.....portable/quality speakers/mic input and more than enough bells+ whistles.

Is it just me: don’t styles and voices of genos2 or even genos and psr series sound better/more realistic and contemporary? Dgx sounds really cheesy, and for example genos2 has even an FM synthesizer inside. Also a question: can one find genos2 voices and styles online and use them in dgx via usb stick?

Yamaha just get it right with the action compared to the others I think. Just does a fine old job and seems to be build like a tank.

I have this keyboard. It is good but the speakers are just underpowered.. it is ok to play alone, but my electric guitar just drowns it. And together without proper line outs it’s not straightforward to connect to monitors…

Looping. Simply mic the speaker and run that into a proper looper with controls like the Boss RC500 or your computer. Done.

The Warm grand combined with one of the DX sounds makes a better piano than the piano room imho. The piano room piano sounds thin and weak and l just ignore it.

There's no other keyboard with this kind of value. The others are just glorified overpriced romplers. PSREs are nothing but a shameful overpriced abominations. Yamaha should release 483 with PSRS voices. And maybe release a DGX 680, 780, and 980 based from the PSRSX series. If they really want to make a profit then they should make a keyboard that is reasonably priced rather than gatekeep and reserve things that is very simple nowadays on expensive keyboards.

@@WoodyPianoShack People on Yamaha forums are recommending taking styles compatible with PSR SX600 due to closest similarity to the model. Previous DGX series models were internally more similar to PSR-E4xx series.

Headphone out with Y cable (mono) or two mics L and R for stereo into a PA or DAW or EQ. There is always a way.

Ahhh, but Woody just bought this instrument. So, it's a current instrument, and deserves a review, even if it's not 'brand new.'

we love the woody's touch, even if it's late. you know what, after reviewing the genos 2, a $5000 instrument, it's even more relevant to show what a $850 instrument can do. and do so nicely.
