Wow... Brenda... what a sweet thing to say! (Shhh... you are now officially my favourite viewer!) And... just FYI... I just put a link in the description for these alcohol Ink ornaments to a new one I posted today with three methods for adding glitter... if glitter even matters to you!)
@donnahughes1939 Donna…. I originally bought a large box of hmmm… 2 o 3 hundred from Alibaba. The white acrylic paint I got off Amazon… name etc in the description but I’ve also included the type of acrylic paint it is since not all types are as effective.
I love these thanks for sharing your idea. I find you to be funny and exciting when doing your video I enjoyed watching. I did two ornaments and they are so beautiful and easy to make. Season greetings
Toni... it's the difference between the inks being alcohol based and the acrylic being water based. However, if worried... you could spray a little 'sealer' in before adding the acrylic.
I am planning to do this for a Christmas project for our youth group! Thank you so much for this comprehensive how to!! Also, prayers for our youth group session would be appreciated!🙏🙏🙏
It's funny sometimes which colours really work with one another or resonate with people... some of my favourite balls have been with the browns and mustard yellows!
I just ordered a bunch of IOD molds from your store and I followed the suggestion to collect more points. I am soooo happy I did. Love, Love Love these. I get so excited with new craft inspirations, Can't wait to try!!
Welcome Sharon and thanks for the kind words! Check out the description of the video for more info... answering questions and clarifying some points! I also have a video with alcohol inks and glitter ornaments... also lovely. (there's one with a mirror finish too but the other 2 versions are my favourites!!)
They are as easy to make as they seem! I have two variation videos out too, one with glitter and one trying them with the mirror effect finish… when you’re ready for more!
oh my goodness....found your videos and these ornaments are gorgeous. It is midnight and I'm having to fight not to head down to my craft room to play..... So beautiful!!
Welcome to the channel - glad you found me! There is also a version of these on the channel with a mirror backing... the inks react to the mirror finish and you can get some cool looks... (this is oneof my very favourite things to do with a group of people because I have never seen one ornament turn out badly, so even those that don't feel crafty or artistic can walk away with something beautiful!) Have fun!!!
It is a fun one. I have a video on the channel using this technique with a mirror backing and one coming out Monday with sparkles... so you'll have lots of options for switching it up once you get going!!)
Thanks for watching! They are fun to make and... look just as good years down the road. I've got some on my tree over 4 years old and still perfect! Check out the video description (if you haven't already) for a little reference info and... if you like glitter... check out the version on the channel with glitter. They hold up for years too!!
LOL!!! I know from classes how many people think they have made something truly ugly... until... the acrylic paint goes in and... BAM!!! I have yet to see anyone make an ugly one!
@@QueenBeeCreations lol.. I literally could not stop!!!!!!! I did balls and disc. The disc are 😱😱😱🤩🤩🤩. My brother was floored. I did those earth tones and when he came home I added the White. Shake, Shake did the reveal his mouth literally fell open. Your an Angel for sharing this your awesome!!!! Happy Holidays !!!
I bought 120 bulbs in different shapes for my own tree just a few days ago from Amazon. I'm finally going to give this a try. Lol, I've been hesitating for two years, but I gotta do it now or have 120 clear bulbs on my tree!!! 😊❤😊😂
Thanks for the tutorial! I will definitely be making these as Christmas gifts this year but will be using plastic balls for safety. Have everything I need to get started so I can't wait to play 🙂
Plastic balls work just the same and look the same so have fun! I’ve also done a version using alcohol ink and glitter… just enter those parameters into the search bar on the channel to check it out.

Just found your video and this is definitely the best idea I’ve seen for colouring these baubles. Love, love, love the ones you’ve created. I have some acrylic baubles to practice on and will need to get some much thinner white paint than what I have but that’s not a problem. I’ve subscribed to your channel so looking forward to watching more of your videos when time permits. Thanks for the inspiration that I’ve been looking for! 🤗
Welcome Ursula, and thank you. I have a video of alcohol ink baubles with a mirror finish and just did one this season trying them with glitter so a couple more experiments ahead of you!
There's a lot of great additional info in the description and in answers to and from others... worth checking out or troubleshooting with if you have issues. For me... it was really as straightforward as in the video - no hidden tricks. I did a Q&A video follow up and since then have also done ornaments with Alcohol Inks and Mirror effects and one with glitter. All are on the channel... just search alcohol inks and they'll pop up! I still make these every year!!
There are many that do the alcohol ink on the outside of the ball (which requires sealing) but... the ink gets everywhere! This method - it's all contained and very little mess - and... bonus... they are beautiful!!
Love this video. Our annual Hunting Widows craft night will be these! What size ornaments are you using. My intent is for them to be put on an ornament holder for display - giving as Xmas gifts.
I'm using the regular size baubles... hmmm... are those 4-5"?? It can be done with any size though. I have another video (you can search on the channel) where I do them with glitter... advantage of this method is that nothing needs to 'drain or wait for it to dry... dollar store glitter works just fine... and they make beautiful gifts!!
Here a yr later & I'm loving your instructions & beautiful baubles Queen Bee. thanku so much for sharing your skills. I'm having problem with hearing you but fortunately we can rewind with a 'click' lol Merry Christmas 2022.
Excellent video. I was having trouble with the thickness of acrylics and thought I would switch to alcohol ink, but now I see I can mix the acrylic with a little water, and add as a backing to the alcohol ink. On my way to the craft store, fingers crossed!
They truly are as lovely as they seem... sorry to tease you with them! It is often easy to take things (like accessibility to supplies) for granted here. The technique works equally well for plastic and would work on non-traditional items too... maybe you're looking at taking the original concept and applying it to a different project entirely.
I really have to try this I did mine a little different I put white inside and then I dabbed my alcohol ink all over them they turned out pretty cool wish I could send you a picture so you can see but I'm going to try this cuz I like the look of it thank you
Absolutely you could do it the way you described... certainly you could 'drip' the ink on the outside of the balls too... each technique would give a different look!!
Jade... I think you'll love it. Refer to some of the comments regarding issues some had with the acrylic paint they used... I lucked out with mine but apparently they are not all created equal!!
Welcome!! I do have a video from last year (this one's 2 years old) where I tried doing a mirror finish inside and this year a video using sparkles... they are all lovely!!
I don't use it for this project myself (that's why it's not in the video) but others expressed concern over the fact that alcohol inks are UV sensitive. I do seal my alcohol ink paintings with a UV protectant and sealer and I dropped that into the list in case they opted to use it. You would spray the inside of the ball before adding any inks... spray, dry and then start the project.
Hi Cindy, I love using Alcohol Ink in my Christmas decorations. I always use a white paint to make the colours zing. My worry has been does the white paint have to dry before putting on the top or can you leave it wet. If the paint stays wet does it make the inks run? Mine seem to so I'm wondering if I am wetting them too much. What are your thoughts?
Definitely Let the white paint dry before closing the ball. I leave mine sitting upside down so any excess drains… allowing things to dry faster. There is a discussion in the comments thread about the best choice for the white paint and I’ve dropped a lot of that info into the description of the video for reference
I am in ❤ with this technique. I bought inks, but other than resin projects, didn't know what else I would use them for. I can play with these all year round, which means I will have a lot done for the holiday sales. I may try these out at craft fairs just to see if they will sell year-round. Thank you for the terrific idea.❤❤❤
Hi there...I watched another UA-cam res video where she tried many different acrylic paint brands and they EACH performed VERY differently. Just fyi brand DOES seem to matter. Would LOVE to try the brand used here...THX.🙏🙏🙏
Do you find that there is a better way of using the colors? ie: darker colors first then lighter? vice versa? dot them as opposed to streaming them? twirling rather than shaking? I absolutely love these and Im going to try them today. Thx for such lovely ideas and projects.
I don't know that I have ever really found a significant difference in the 'order' of the colours. The alcohol from the second colour will 'activate' the colour first laid down so they don't 'layer' over each other as a regular paint may. I generally use the blower to 'blow' the colours around so don't swirl or anything since the air blows the colours around. The exception is when I do the 'flattened lentil shaped ornaments. those I tend to let stream down the sides... Have fun with it!!
Loved the video and want to do this as a fun project after a ladies lunch. I was looking at the supplies list and noticed that sealers are mentioned but I didn’t see that in the video. Did I miss it? Thx!
Two options…. Some will spray the outside of the balls with a UV protectant sealer to prevent the inks from fading over time. I don’t bother. Some mention experiencing issues with their acrylic paint ‘pulling’ the alcohol ink off the ball. If so.. you can spritz in some sealer between the inks and acrylic. I haven’t had this issue so don’t do that either… which is why you didn’t see it in the video.
Cherry… the information on the products used is in the description. Apparently I lucked out with the first type of Acrylic paint I used… it worked well for me. Others commented that the type made a difference… type, not brand. So I made special note of that for you.
Hello and thank you for the inspiration, i have gone crazy doing these baubles and adore them, BUT i am having a lot of trouble drying the inside. even after weeks the paint is wet. any ideas?
It sounds like too much paint. If you have excess it will take forever. You just need enough to lightly coat the inside, highlighting the alcohol inks. Try upending them over a cup to get rid of the excess and then dry them… rotating periodically to ensure that they retain an even coating.
Also... if you haven`t watched the `live` I did a week or so ago check that out... it was a Q&A on these ornaments... there may be more insights in there... like the type of acrylic you`re using perhaps!
Could I use a heat gun to dry the inks? Just found you today and loved your video! I'm grateful for your generosity in sharing your art experiences. Thank you!!!
The alcohol evaporates so quickly on its own, not sure why you'd want to... also a little hesitant to test out the flammability of the alcohol to the amount of heat applied?
You don't have to buy the huge pump jug... just a size that works for you. Check in the description for the 'type' of acrylic that works best and use it. If it comes in tubes... great. if not, you could dilute some down and put it into a squeeze bottle (for ease of getting it in the ornament)
@@QueenBeeCreations yeah I can understand why! I did glitter ones last year and was sad when i ran out of baubles to decorate. So got double this year now I'm wondering if I need more!! 😂
Forgeos. I boyght 48 glass balls to do this with and two boxes of alcohol ink. One with 12 colors the other with 36 colors! I also just ordered 48 plastic balls in all 4 sizes! I'm going to have a blast. This years tree will be spectacular! 😊😊😊
These are so pretty! Can’t wait to try them. I want to get several plastic onion shaped bulbs found online and then create a decorative string light with them. Each onion bulb would have a light inserted in the top of it along the length of the string light. Do you think that will work?
Wow... I'd love to see that! You might want to try a sample with lights before adding the white to see how the light illuminates the ink and one with the white to see how/if the light shines enough through the opaque barrier.
Such beautiful pieces! I tried this last year, but I could never get the acrylic paint to dry inside the ornament…. Even though I turned them like you suggest. I used straight acrylic paint, and did not add drops of water. Maybe that is why? How long do yours take to dry? I appreciate any suggestions you may have. Thanks 😊
Maryrenee... I generally let it dry overnight, turning them every so often to ensure that the coverage of the white remains consistent. I leave them propped so that the hole remains fully exposed to the air, not sitting flat on a surface, closing it off. Hope that makes sense.
To piggyback on her comment, how much acrylic paint do you put in the ornaments? I tried your technique this weekend after letting the alcohol ink dry for a week and when I added the acrylic, it pulled a good deal of the ink off. So now I have a much more muted looking Christmas ball. So how much water do you add to your paint to make it as fluid as it appears to be?
Hmmm... never really measured... maybe a teaspoon? and half a teaspoon of water? I buy the acrylic paint in a big jug (because of classes) with a pump action on top - so... one pump. It's fairly thick so just enough water to make it 'move' but not to make it too runny. So... the consistency of a melted milkshake, not cake batter...???
I don't use a sealer with mine and haven't had an issue. Others were mentioning they were having trouble with the 'acrylic' seeming to wash away their inks. Likely this was because the inks were not fully dry before the acrylic paint was added, the acrylic paint was the thin kind rather than studio/thick body acrylic but I suggested that they could try 'sealing' the inks before adding the acrylic if that would help them. The exception for me is if I do the 'mirrored' alcohol ink balls (yes, there's a video for that on the channel) in which case the mirroring effect spray will wipe out the inks if no sealer is used.
Please help us! We found this great video and have been having such fun creating ornies. Now we're working on NEXT holiday season but we have a few questions. Is your acrylic a certain high quality brand or just the cheap stuff (mine is Craft brand) since so much is used to coat? We've added some water to make it runnier but it tends to streak inside the glass balls. Next: we also find that the water-based acrylic reactivates the AI somehow and then distorts the beautiful AI designs we're making. Do you know why? For instance, today the white acrylic totally diluted the Botanical inside and turned it into a mere whisper of green. The blue used with the botanical bled pink into the acrylic since red is a pigment in blue. I am using Ranger and Pinata inks, nothing off-brand, only the "good" stuff. I am using a hair dryer after the inks to MAKE SURE the insides are dry before moving to acrylic. Any help or hints would be much appreciated. Ann and Kris - Minnesota fans
Hey there Ann and Kris! There has been much discussion in the past comments about many of these issues so don't hesitate to look back. I have posted the exact type of white acrylic I have used in the description... apparently others have commented that the 'type'... not brand matters. I lucked out with the one I bought apparently!! Some people experienced the 'bleeding' of colour you described (though some never had it... go figure!!) and their solution was to add a topcoat layer between the alcohol inks and the acrylic. That worked for them and you might want to give it a 'go'. I do have a video I did with some troubleshooting comments so you can check that out too and see if that helps at all. ua-cam.com/video/S5_6LPkX69E/v-deo.html I also did a version using 'glitter', with no acrylic... that video is here: ua-cam.com/video/CL3Bdk669KU/v-deo.html I did three version of the glitter ornaments (if I'm remembering correctly) but ran a couple of classes using my favourite version - the one with wet ink and glitter added directly into the ball. Everyone's turned out fantastic and that is definitely my preferred no-fail version. Different results with varying the colour of the ink, the colour of the glitter and even varying the size of the glitter itself.
I'm thinking you're referencing the 'pump' jug the white paint was in... it came that way but, as others have found, it's not offered on Amazon any more, which is where I bought it.
Gorgeous😍 Those are absolutely fantastic🤗 I would love to try this, but I have no alcohol ink available to me at the moment. However, watching is almost as fun, thank you
Hi ,I have recently found (and subscribed to) your channel ,I love the use of alcohol inks in the baubles and just happened to have all the necessary stuff at home. I had a little go and now have a question, my acrylic paint has dried and 'cracked' inside the baubles, is this because the paint is too thick ,I did only use a couple of drops of water and it did seem quite fluid . Can I rectify the problem by adding more diluted paint or squirting in more ink? They are such fun to do I would like to get it right.
Welcome... and thanks for the subscription! If the acrylic paint is cracking then I would definitely say that there is too much and likely too thick of paint. I didn't encounter this problem but I did only add the small amount of paint that I showed you. I'm not sure that adding more paint will 'eliminate' the lines of the cracks but... at this point... it is worth checking. Note too that I dry my balls upside down so any excess acrylic can flow out of the ball and into a little paper cup - eliminating any excess. Check on the channel also for the alcohol ink ornament version using glitter instead of the acrylic... a different look but also lovely!!
Thanks for the reply ,I am pretty sure I am going in much too thick ,you use a pump for your paint and I was just guessing, I did dry upside down and there were no drips !! Back to the drawing board when I get back from work this afternoon...when you will probably be having breakfast as I am in the UK. I have seen the other videos, that's next on my to do list. Have a happy day. Alison.
I know you have to keep these out of direct sunlight. Is there anything I can put on them to keep the sun from affecting them? Does it work on plastic? And will it dull the high gloss finish or yellow after awhile? Thx so much for your help.
I don't personally bother for the baubles... but... when I do an alcohol ink painting I spray it with a UV protectant from Krylon. If you were worried about them you could perhaps spray the inside with the spray first... let it dry and then try the alcohol inks. I'm not sure how the Krylon would affect the movement but you could try one and see.
@QueenBeeCreations Thanks so much. I'm having such a great time making these & probably wouldn't have attempted it had it not been for your great video. It was so easy the way you explained it. Thx so much.

Here a yr later & I'm loving your instructions & beautiful baubles Queen Bee. thanku so much for sharing your skills. I'm having problem with hearing you but fortunately we can rewind with a 'click' lol Merry Christmas 2022.
Glad you found the video - that's the beauty of UA-cam... timing isn't an issue! Enjoy!
Will have to try this!
One of my favourites.... ever!!!
Excellent video. I was having trouble with the thickness of acrylics and thought I would switch to alcohol ink, but now I see I can mix the acrylic with a little water, and add as a backing to the alcohol ink. On my way to the craft store, fingers crossed!
Good Luck! (they are addictive... so many combinations!!!)
Love these!!!
Me too Sandy… i make them, or one of my other versions, every year!
Thank you for showing this! This was amazing and I can't wait to try it
I LOVE making these Andrea... they are so much fun!
@@QueenBeeCreations I will definitely post pics once I make them 😁
Really nice!
They truly are lovely!! I have some of the originals from back when this video aired... they have held up perfectly.
So beautiful! I can’t wait to try them!!!!
They are just as lovely as they look - and addictive to make!!
Love it, sadly here in Namibia these glass balls are not available as we only have *1* hobbyshop left in the whole country!!
I've never used ink, but now must try your technique. I've been using crayon pieces and a blow dryer. Thank you for sharing ❤
Well, Deborah... we're even... I've never used crayons! What I like about the inks though is their translucency.
@@QueenBeeCreations oh, me too. 🙂 the crayons can get muddy looking very quickly
Beautiful ❤❤❤
Thank you Kathy! they really are lovely... and easy!!
So pretty, I’ll have to try doing this!
You`re gonna love it!! Make wure to read some of the comments from others - I think people have added some great insights.
Thank you! I’m definitely trying this beautiful technique.
Jade... I think you'll love it. Refer to some of the comments regarding issues some had with the acrylic paint they used... I lucked out with mine but apparently they are not all created equal!!
I've been doing these for a while and just replayed this video 😂 that sound of the air in the ornament is SO familiar it's cracking me up
It's distinctive!!!
Just came upon your channel. Absolutely love this and love working with alcohol inks! Thank you, Will definitely be making these! 💜
Welcome!! I do have a video from last year (this one's 2 years old) where I tried doing a mirror finish inside and this year a video using sparkles... they are all lovely!!
I absolutely love these.
They really are lovely and... addictive to make!
I see you have sealer and UV protectant listed but I didn't see when that was used.
Thank you. You're hilarious!
Glad you enjoyed, thanks for watching!!
Love these! YT recommended ❤
Welcome Kelli…if you love these… and really, they are beautiful, check out the version with glitter and with the mirror effect paint!
I want to do this
You'll love them... so beautiful!! I have some from 4 years ago - still look perfect!
You are so welcome Barbara! I LOVE making these... the hardest part of it is getting myself to stop!
these are awesome - wish I saw these sooner lol I'm subscribed now lol
Always next year... beauty of UA-cam... the video will be here waiting!! (and thanks for joining us!!)
Hi there...I watched another UA-cam res video where she tried many different acrylic paint brands and they EACH performed VERY differently. Just fyi brand DOES seem to matter. Would LOVE to try the brand used here...THX.🙏🙏🙏
Well, that’s good to know! I bought mine from Amazon, titanium white, Meeden Studio acrylic paint
Can you tell me what acrylic paint you used and where did you get that size of bottle? Absolutely beautiful ornaments!
These are gorgeous. Lovely video. 🥰
Thank you! I appreciate your taking the time to share your comments!
Love this!! Thank you
You're so welcome!
Love these!! What do you suggest if I dont have the pump jug of acrylic paint?
You don't have to buy the huge pump jug... just a size that works for you. Check in the description for the 'type' of acrylic that works best and use it. If it comes in tubes... great. if not, you could dilute some down and put it into a squeeze bottle (for ease of getting it in the ornament)
thanks!@@QueenBeeCreations
These are stunning! Thanks for the inspiration! 🎄Will be trying this out at the weekend 😁
Oooh... just a warning... they are addictive! Have fun!!
@@QueenBeeCreations yeah I can understand why! I did glitter ones last year and was sad when i ran out of baubles to decorate. So got double this year now I'm wondering if I need more!! 😂
Well, a limited supply is a 'forced' stop!
Forgeos. I boyght 48 glass balls to do this with and two boxes of alcohol ink. One with 12 colors the other with 36 colors! I also just ordered 48 plastic balls in all 4 sizes! I'm going to have a blast. This years tree will be spectacular! 😊😊😊
Jill!!! Enjoy! This is addictive so you have definitely planned ahead for that!
@@QueenBeeCreations Thank you so much for your prompt reply and for sharing this tutorial!
Thank you in turn for watching and sharing your ideas!!! (I certainly can't have them all!!)
Hi there! Amazed at how these turned out. Stunning... Question: is a sealer necessary?
Thank you sooo much for prompt answer to my question!!!💕
I try to get to questions as quickly as possible so it doesn't hold up any projects!
I do have a video I did with some troubleshooting comments so you can check that out too and see if that helps at all. ua-cam.com/video/S5_6LPkX69E/v-deo.html
I also did a version using 'glitter', with no acrylic... that video is here: ua-cam.com/video/CL3Bdk669KU/v-deo.html I did three version of the glitter ornaments (if I'm remembering correctly) but ran a couple of classes using my favourite version - the one with wet ink and glitter added directly into the ball. Everyone's turned out fantastic and that is definitely my preferred no-fail version. Different results with varying the colour of the ink, the colour of the glitter and even varying the size of the glitter itself.
Without the white paint, would it be like a sunbather effect?
Sorry, sun catcher, not sun bather 🙄
Without the white they are lovely but… definitely like a sun catcher… they would need the light to show off the colours.
I was watching your video and saw your paint dispenser can you please let me know where you found it.
I'm thinking you're referencing the 'pump' jug the white paint was in... it came that way but, as others have found, it's not offered on Amazon any more, which is where I bought it.
@@QueenBeeCreations do you have the brand maybe I can find it somewhere else
I made a couple of these and love how they turned out but I can't figure out how to post a picture here.
Kim... I don't think you can but... feel free to email me a pic... I'd love to see them... queenbeecreations@primus.ca
Gorgeous😍 Those are absolutely fantastic🤗 I would love to try this, but I have no alcohol ink available to me at the moment. However, watching is almost as fun, thank you
Next season Angela... just keep them in mind!
You can make your own with alcohol and markers
Alison.
@AlisonWaldorf-yy4he okay… definitely sounds too thick for sure! Good luck!
What brand of white paint are you using with a pump, please? Thanks
I believe more of the details are in the video description... Meeden Acrylic, Studio Grade.
Can you use the plastic ones
Absolutely! They work just the same!!
