I've been hoping you would do this story! I used to raft guide on the Nolichucky River and lived in Erwin back in the late 70s and early 80s. I dated a girl there whose grandmother witnessed the tragedy in Kingsport and the subsequent hanging in Erwin. We used to tell this story to our customers and you wouldn't believe some of the responses we got, especially the bit about the trial! Most people just thought we were pulling their legs and rolled their eyes. But we had a reproduction of that picture you showed for proof. Thanks for sharing this sad story of man's horrendous treatment of such gentle creatures.
I have heard this story many times and was glad to run across it in your videos. Sad chain of event, the first being Mary should have been left in the wild where she was born. Had they taken better care of her they would have know she had an abscessed tooth. She reacted the only way she knew how but should have never been killed much less hang! I love your stories!
You should look up George Burkhart the man from Harlan County Kentucky that raised his family in a hollowed out sycamore tree. He was said to have lived to be 112 or 120 and had I think 4 wives.
This story will live in infamy! Owner tortured her to keep the show alive and supposedly loved her but didn't bother to knock her out to detract from her screaming!😢😢😢
