Granberg 106b jig, Filing a 28" chain in 3 minutes with a stump vise.

  • I am filing a 28" chain with 30 cutters, full skip sequence, 2:58 min using a sump vise on a four foot stump which gives solid support. The Granberg 106b jig maintains the angles and cutter lengths. Working from the front of the bar enables me to see the face of the cutters so I can check for complete sharpening. I am not counting strokes. By filing up to the file stop screw, good cutter length accuracy is maintained. Switching between left and right cutters requires the down filing angle and top plate angle to be switched as shown half way into the work. Average time per cutter is 6 seconds with installation time included. Time per cutter will be a bit faster for regular sequence chain as the chain is moved less per cutter. I have put a small dimple on the bar for the body screw of the Granberg to stabilize the jig.

    Wonder how many files this guy goes through. Yes it does take a little work to use it correctly. Like for instance, LEARNING HOW TO USE A FILE PROPERLY!!!

    I also strongly recommend NOT dragging the file backward. Even if its a double cut file it is still wrong to file the tooth from tip toward gullet. The product is a good one,

    Shane, I think George has got this sorted, and his video is very helpful to the general chainsaw community. The Granberg is a great tool, you can use a square file on some of them. Learning how to use a file properly is a lifelong learning skillset. I think most of us know this through sad trial and error.

    Your video's are very educational sir. I bought the Granberg 106B filing jig. I only push stroke as a personal preference with a round file.. However , due to your video's , I now can sharpen my crosscut chains for my Husqvarna 455 Rancher RAZOR SHARP !!!! At least 50% sharper than any BRAND NEW CHAIN OUT OF THE BOX. Takes a few sharpenings to REALLY understand exactly how the Granberg 106B jig should be used , but , once you know precisely how the jig should be used and know your chain precisely , you'll know what is sharp and what is RAZOR SHARP. I still cannot believe that I can now get my chains RAZOR SHARP. If I can do it , anyone can with practice. Thanks for such great video's.

    Files for these applications cut only when pushed! Never push and pull through the metal! A file is not a saw.

    I find it best to mount the guide around the middle of the bar, and do not need a stump vise if I can lay it on a large-enough flat surface and grab the file holder by the handle, PUSHING ONLY, inside-out on each cutter. Run files FLAT, 30 deg from perpendicular to bar. Rotate holder assembly for 2nd side. A marker helps, to ID the first cutter filed. Set up and done properly, a couple of PUSH strokes per cutter generally gets it done. Very important: set file ht so that~ 1/5 of file diameter is above teeth. Too-acute cutters lose it quickly. (Don't jerk the file around like George if you want it to last.) Setup and filing of depth gauges precisely is almost a no-brainer, needing medium attention-span and 6" flat file. (Never were, nor would be, "rakers" on saw chain; see crosscut saws.)

    Hmmm. I was taught to just sharpen only on the "push" stroke and loosen up on the "pull" stroke so the file is not actually cutting. But the Granberg itself seems like a good tool.

    What are you doing? Sawing that file back and forth, that is destroying the file and each stoke you make like that wipes out what you are trying to accomplish. I have 20 years experience with chainsaws/logging power saw competitions and it blows my mind just how dumb that 99% of chainsaw sharpening videos posted on youtube really are. Based on the logic that most of you use it is no wonder that there are so many chainsaw related injuries each year. Most of you have no clue and giving you a chainsaw is worse than giving you a loaded revolver.

      24cupsandcounting you're right. I really like guys who swear they can accurately sharpen with just a bare file.
      simply amazing how little some guys know and still make a living with improperly sharpened chains.

    Interesting variation on saw chain filing. I always did mine w/o a guide and I could cut all day long on about three sharpenings.

    I just purchased this Granberg sharpening guide and it hasn't got here yet so I was hoping to find some videos on how to set it up and all that good stuff your video is good if you know what to set it. What angle all that stuff I wasn't really looking for Speed I was looking for instructions on how to properly do it so you go maybe you can set a world record

      Why the rush? Take the time to do it right. The cutters aren’t sharp, each time you pulled the file it dulled the tooth.

    This is incorrect sharpning, a file only works one way.

    I rescued one of these jigs from a trash bin some time back and finally cleaned it up and gave it a serious try yesterday after viewing this video. The jig I have may need repair because the chain clamp won't tighten. Maybe that is why it was in the trash. Anyway I am still uncertain about the height setting. Do you set the file on top of a cutter and then rotate the adjustment to lower by 85% of the file diameter?

    • @georgelawrence1726
      @georgelawrence1726 9 років тому +1

      Set the height just as you describe it. I raise the file and then put the bottom of the file on the inside corner of one of the cutters. Check the height number on the dial. I then drop the file down by a measured value using the height dial. For 3/8" chain, I drop down about 0.180" or 0.185" for slightly more hook (equivalent to your 85% of diameter), A bit more hook for soft wood and a bit less for harder wood.
      Chain clamp consists of two small plates on either side of the chain. Both screws should turn easily. If not pull them out and check the threads. Possibly replace them with 1/2" 10-32 cap screws.
      You will find more detail on www.treefalling.com. I am working on using the Granberg on square ground chain.

      I've now used the jig to sharpen six or eight chains and I rather like it. It gives me more confidence that my angles are remaining consistent all the way around the chain. To set the height I just try to snug the file into the chain. I think my jig is in need of some refurbishment, but it works.

    do you pull the file or do you push it.

    • @brettblack7049
      @brettblack7049 4 роки тому

      Yes if your using both hands and filing from over top of the saw as many do.
      Inside of the tooth to the outside is proper on a round ground/filed chain, inside out on square when converting it back to round and most go inside out when sharpening or converting round chain to square, but some go outside in when sharpening square because it's easier to see what you're doing. I'd rather grind both and touch up inside out on round ground.
